  1. This website has a nice breakdown of various pedigrees and their key books. https://itsalljustcomics.com The link to the specific page gets an error message when I tried to post it here. But click on the link that says: "Existence and Grades of Silver Age Key Books From the Major Pedigree Collections" Lots of good info there.
  2. I think that's true about the cover gloss and freshness. But I think that's also true of the PC books, which sometimes have some translucent covers. For me, the Curator books and the Boston books seem to have the best colors and freshness. I don't have many Western Penn books so I can't weigh in there.
  3. From Worldwide Comics website: "The Golden State collection was amassed by a meticulous collector residing in the San Francisco area who carefully filed away his newsstand copies each month. The core of the collection ranged from the early 60s to present, but also included a very impressive run of Golden Age as well. The owner finally decided to part with the Golden and Silver Age portions of his collection in the early 90s, and much of it entered the market through a national dealer. Unfortunately much of the Silver Age was never documented as the Golden State collection, although one can still find random CGC graded issues floating about. The average grade of this period was 9.4 and 9.6, truly amazing books. Fast forward to 2008, the original owner has finally decided to sell the remainder of his collection, which consists of late Bronze Age to present. WWC is proud to offer this last section of the Golden States to collectors starting this week. Just about every single title and issue from Marvel, DC and most 80s independents are there, with the vast majority grading CGC 9.8. WWC will be releasing over 5,000 CGC graded Golden States throughout the rest of 2009 and early 2010. Each book will display a Golden State sticker on the CGC case." It was Dan Greenhalgh of Showcase New England who acquired the Silver Age part of the collection and started selling the books in 1997. I know that because when I heard Dan got the collection, I drove from NYC to Dan's office in Wallingford, CT to get my hands on the books. As far as I know, only one collector, John Sergeant, beat me there. But John managed to wipe out large parts of the Silver Age Marvel runs. I still managed to buy 137 GS books from Dan on that trip – all priced at 2.5 x Guide. In early 2000, John Sergeant sold his collection to Joe Verenault and the books hit the market again. CGC hadn't yet opened its doors, so obviously the books were still raw.
  4. These are all Golden State books. I'm probably biased because I own lot of GS books but I think they're pretty great. Probably not quite up there with the Curator or Pacific Coast books because the runs started later. But I think they're nicer than most SA pedigrees.
  5. Thanks for posting all these. I've never seen a lot of those GL covers. I know you're not the biggest fan of some of those later covers. But I think the #71, 72, #74, and #75 are pretty great.
  6. Miller and Janson did this splash page for Marvel Super Heroes #95 which reprints Hulk #145. I have no idea why.
  7. I never realized that Miller did the pencils for MK #15 until just now. Joe Jusko's inks disguised that for me.
  8. Before looking through this thread a couple months ago, I hadn't bought a DC book since the '90s. My buying habits have changed again.
  9. Closed. Please shoot me a PM if you're interested in anything.
  10. I was nine years old when GSXM1 and X-Men #94 came out. I wasn't buying regularly but somehow bought both off the stands. They struck me enough that I bought #95, 96, and #97 too. At that age, I definitely didn't know to buy multiple copies or even keep them in nice shape. The next X-Men issues I remember buying were in the #111 to #115 range. I think by that time there was some buzz about GS #1 and X-Men #1. I started collecting regularly when X-Men #128 was on the stands. And as mentioned before in this thread, the X-Men were definitely a big deal by then.
  11. I know a lot of these aren't covers. But let's call this the "Gil Kane appreciation thread".
