  1. I think he paid Hauser a multiple of Overstreet NM at the time. Why are you portraying him as if he's an ingrate who ripped him off? He was paying these multiples at a time when the comics industry was in the tank and was one of a tiny group of people paying prices like that, which is exactly why Hauser went to him first. Nobody knew CGC and the Internet would combine to cause things to explode the way they did. I agree, pretty much all of the major pedegrees that came round at that point in time were priced at multiples of guide, and even though by todays standards they are really cheap, you have to remember they were considered very expensive in their day and by no means a bargain. Should i thank Roter profusely for allowing me to pay 3x guide for the Pacific Coast that i purchased, at a time when paying 3x guide for average Silver Age comics was considered insanity ? Regardless of the fact that they are now worth 50 times what i paid for them, i overpaid at the time.
  2. $45k $35k $28k my prediction $52k $38k $50k (Somehow Doug always seems to get prices that suprise me)
  3. So what do people think the ending price on the DD's will be. Curator 9.6 W pages is currently at $24,250 with 6 days left Heritage 9.6 OW pages currently at $19,120 with 8 days left Copy on Pedigree 9.6 OW-W pages starts in a 5 days and ends in 14 days. Last recorded sale was in Jan for $62,000
  4. I agree that B&B 34 is by far the best looking cover of any DC key. However, I like the cover of B&B 28 as a close 2nd to #34. Great cover but a lame storyline. They tried too hard to get all the JLA members involved and given equal time. I remember reading it as a kid and thinking the story was lame but I loved the concept of the superhero team. So you really think that Brave and the Bold #34 cover is a better image than the #28 cover. I agree with you thats its more dynamic, but from a composition standpoint, the monster is bad, real bad.
  5. I have been offered a 7.5 but the asking price is $8k. Given the 8.0 sale at $10k, does anyone see this as a reasonable price to pay for a nice looking 7.5 ? A 7.5 recently for $5K which was a friendly price. For $8K, it's a bit high...$6-7K will be a FMV for it. (thumbs u Well whilst i would normally agree with you, given the fact that no copies are coming on the market and that the last 8.0 sold for $10k, i would think that $7k is now a minimum price for this book, especially in light of what people are saying regarding price hikes and scarcity. Obviously if you know of copies that are being sold for $6k in 7.5, then i would revise my estimate and ideally love for you to pass on the lead to me so that i can purchase it.
  6. Is the Heritage copy for sale because the dealer bought it, pressed it and resubbed it, and is now selling it ?
  7. Did you hear or see what copies were being sold for in >6.0 ?
  8. I have been offered a 7.5 but the asking price is $8k. Given the 8.0 sale at $10k, does anyone see this as a reasonable price to pay for a nice looking 7.5 ?
  9. I put all three 9.6s on one page for easy comparison. I was p.m.'d and told that the Heritage copy was a 9.4 that was pressed into a 9.6, can anyone verify that ?
  10. Surely the sellers of the 3 9.6' #1's would be crazy to consign them knowing that there were another couple of copies in other auctions. Can't be the best way to get the best price, considering everyone will go for the best looking copy.
  11. I have to agree, there is nothing like cracking open a book and smelling, touching and looking through an old comic.
  12. I would add that there are only 23 copies of TTA #27 and 31 copies of Sgt Fury #1 in VF and above on the census, making them (along with the 3 mentioned above) the 5 hardest Silver Age Marvels keys to find in high grade. In actual fact the Jim #83 with 42 copies, is one of the easiest of those early Silver Age Key Marvels to obtain (or so it would seem)
  13. I would disagree with you on this point and say that they are actually very rare. Whilst the odd issue here and there do turn up, you rarely (and by rarely i mean 3 times in the last 20 years that i have been looking for them) turn up as a complete set. Having long ago decided to try to get the whole run i settled for picking up individual issues and after 10 years of searching gave up on getting the complete run. Its usually the same numbers that turn up and the ones with Superman on the covers are not (as people believe) the hardest ones to get (with the exception of the first issue). When i get home later i will send you the information contained within the British Price Guide for Comics circa 1998 (last edition), which quotes sales of two complete sets with further information. Also if it helps, i remember having a conversation with Malcolm of Compal and Duncan from the British Pice Guide some 15 years ago and they both agreed on an estimated 5-10 complete sets remaining only.
  14. Comicopolis, you should venture to the states more than, as i must say that most shops in the states are bollocks for older material also. At least in Central London you have Gosh, Orbital and Comicana that have a quantity of Silver Age back issues, and that's just central London. In the whole of London there are quite a few more 30 century, Krypton etc. In the whole of Manhatten i have only come across 3 shops that i have found carry any depth of Silver Age and thats out of the 10 shops that i visited. Most will have a few Bronze Age and maybe a handfull of Silver Age, but that is in. So i think its unfair to say the shops over here are mess, well at least the London ones (can't really comment on the outer London shops . )
  15. Earl if we are thinking about the same shop in Notting Hill, then it was run by a man called Roger who was a very informed collector. If memory serves me right, thats were i picked up both my copies of Seduction of the Innocent (The US one with the biblio page and the UK edition). As to Comic Showcase, i use to go there every other week in 1982-85, the best place for back issues at the time bar none. Picked up many high grade Silver and Golden age comics over the years and was quite sad to hear of it's demise.
  16. Bronty do you know what the market is like for all the Lithos they produced from the originals ? I see them on Heritage quite often, although i have been told those are the common ones and its the gold framed ones that are limited ?
  17. i remember attending the London shows back in the late 80's early 90's when Daryl first came onto the scene. Back then he was definately not as bad as he is now, although he had all the signs that he was a heartless callous .
  18. Having dealt with Richard, i would say that should not be mentioned in the same breath as Daryl, but his grading does leave a lot to be desired, Indeed. I bought quite a few comics from in May and most were overgraded. I shan't order with him again. Bob, I've dealt with Richard and while it may be unfair to compare him to Darryl in terms of honesty, I've found his grading to be very bad. I bought a few lots of low/mid grade early SA and every book was consistently a full grade overgraded (FN+ = VG+). I even showed the bunch to FT who agreed with my opinion. Richard did refund me but wasn't happy about it. I've since seen the grades he's given comics on ebay and it's convinced me that it wasn't a one off. Furthermore a freind of mine visited the Quicksilver warehouse earlier in the year and told me that he didn't think the grading was at all accurate. Overall there is no question in my mind. This does seem to be the consensus, nice guy but overgrades Cant this also be said about Ted Van Liew of Superworld ? Nice guy but overgrades.
  19. Petty is an understatement. I once ordered a few hundred magazine bags from him, to be collected from a Manchester, England comic mart, which at the time I attended regularly. When I arrived, he told me he'd decided to sell them all to someone else shortly before, and "unfortunately" had none left. Then he said, very forcefully, "It's OK that?! - Isn't it?! - Yeah?!" That is, attempted to browbeat me, on my first order with him, into accepting that this selfishness and total lack of concern was somehow acceptable behaviour. (Oh, the mart had only been open an hour, so I wasn't late-in-the-day or anything.) I thought quietly to myself, "How utterly pathetic and desperate. All over a few comic bags." I then said, "Well, you could fill my missing order by mail?", to which he replied, in a very angry tone, and pointing extremely aggressively at my face... "Yeah, and you'll pay the postage!!" (This was in front of a pal of mine who has a table at the mart, by the way. I always like to give some indication that I can be substantiated.) So, regardless of the nature or value of the order you place, a few cheap bags or a CGC Batman 1, the misbehaviour never seems to stop. Personally, this makes my skin crawl, literally, and I can't be far enough away from it. One of many here in Britain, apparently. Well that about sums him up...
  20. Having dealt with Richard, i would say that should not be mentioned in the same breath as Daryl, but his grading does leave a lot to be desired,
  21. Well i did tell you to get them, oh well i suppose the up side is after people see the record price that was achieved for them, no doubt another one will surface.
  22. Ian, Let me just correct you The Triumph magazine is not just another reprint of American stories, but The Reprint of American stories. Given that it came out in 1939 and features an original Superman Cover (which would have been sanctioned by DC), the Triumph Mags are the earliest reprint of Superman material in comic (magazine) form and not just in the U.K.. Tying in with (i think) Superman #3 ?? in August 1939, surely even you must understand the importance of this issue in the British Marketplace, and even in the US marketplace (due to it's original cover). Given that it much scarcer than any other Superman/Action comics issue, i don't think it's historic importance should be under estimated. Also i love my copy to bits
  23. Ian, have you ever considered going for the Sunday papers featuring Superman or the daily's ?
  24. Ian are these items actually published by DC & if not why bother with them, surely not just because it has a DC character in them as that would leave you open to getting lots of other comics published by other companies featuring a DC character?
