  1. Two ludicrously unrealistic things about the conclusion:

    1) What is Rick, a surgeon? How on earth did he manage to cut Negan's neck just enough to be life-threatening, not enough to kill him right away. Ludicrous.

    2) As someone else has said, not one of Rick's group died in the big fight, despite all the guns the Saviors had. Again, ludicrous.

One thing I don't necessarily find ridiculous is letting Negan live, though. First of all, it's clear that the group does what Rick says, even if they don't like it. Secondly, he's more use to them alive I think - as an example of how they can beat a more powerful enemy by effectively getting him to submit, rather than killing him.

I've come to the end of this arc feeling that the story of Rick's group is pretty much done. It seems to have become awfully repetitive of late. I think the book could really use a completely fresh cast, at least for a while. Hopefully the rumours/speculation about the next issue delivering that are correct.

  2. what if we nominate one individual who will be the designated "HOF/PL" person so that if a PL/Hofer posts a thread for sale that person and that person alone will post a polite statement that the seller is currently on the PL/HOF and that buyers are free to complete any sales but know that they will have no protection from the board if the deal goes south. this would be posted just once so that it doesn't become a pile on.

Jay, what do you mean they have no protection from the board?

Surely whatever protections exist on the board (and I'm not sure that there is anything beyond the usual Paypal/CC cover) are available to buyers regardless of whether the person they buy from is on a list or not?

  3. Some thoughts about the events of issue 125 and what's to come in 126:

    1) If Rick intended to kill Negan, then actually thrusting the blade into his throat would seem to make more sense than the slash that he did. Quicker than swinging your arm in a wide arc and harder for Negan to block (which he could easily have done if he'd reflexively thrown out an arm to protect himself).

    2) On the other hand, if Rick intended to infect him, it would have been a lot more sensible to stab him in the stomach, rather than going for his throat. Again, a lot higher percentage - less chance of Negan rocking back and having the throat slash miss entirely.

    3) It does NOT seem likely to me that Rick is willing to lay down his life for the sake of killing Negan. If he thought that losing Negan would make the Saviors lose heart and surrender, why didn't he just get Andrea to take him out from the wall?

    4) So there must be some kind or plan - or at least an outcome that he's hoping for. Possibly Dwight has spoken to the other Saviors and got them onside (although Rick has no way of knowing this). Possibly it's a huge gamble on Rick's part that he can alpha-male them all into doing what HE wants (since they've shown themselves willing to follow a dominant character).

    5) My hope for this series would be that things are tied off in 126, but with certain things (in particular what ultimately happens to both Rick and Negan) remaining ambiguous, and that 127 is set say 5 years in the future. Some of the old characters remain, some don't, and we find out over the next couple of years of the books a little bit about what happened. Not too much uneccesary exposition, just things gradually coming out of the woodwork. That would allow Carl to come front and centre (I don't care what people say, a little kid leading a group of adults is NOT realistic), and for lots of new characters to be introduced without another contrived "oh look, here's another community and another ready-made antagonist" set up.

  4. No, but someone who has been a member of the community for awhile, is trusted by mist people here and that doesn't mind receiving a comic book, telling the buyer it is as described and then after seller receives payment shipping to the buyer.

A couple of the Magic the gathering communities have people that have volunteered to do this. If they accept to act as a third party, they ask for compensation, usually a few books or some cards worth a few bucks for time spent. Some of them are also used to help verify authenticity of cards that tend to be counterfeited.

The whole transaction is still completed by USPS or whatever, just involves an extra week and shipping the same twice.

The kind of escrow you're talking about might be a good idea for very high value books, but realistically nobody is going to buy one of those from a completely unknown member anyway.

For lower values, some combination of boardies vouching for each other, Paypal protection and use of common sense usually works OK. There have been some instances of boardies being actually scammed and losing money without any resolution, but given the number of sales that take place on the boards, both publically and via PM, those are few and far between.

  5. The bare bones of the plot sound very similar to Scalped, don't you think? Prodigal son returns to a home that he never thought he'd come back to, confronts evil authoritarian figure while wrestling with the ghosts of his parents?

I don't doubt that it will go in a very different direction - I mean, the protagonists seem to be very different characters, for one thing. But the similarities do seem striking at this point.

  6. Anyone else watching 'Cemetery' carpetbomb the marketplace? :insane:

    Updated that for you.

Why are people ragging on this guy? He wants to get to 50 posts - it's not like he's hiding it.

If he's posting inane things in order to do so, that puts him in company with about 99% of the boardies here. You're acting like he's some kind of scammer. He wants to participate in the PIF thread, and he knows what the requirements are. Look, if he ends up joining in and junk-donkeying up the joint then by all means bash him. Otherwise, give it a rest.

If you really want to rail against inconsequential posts, go and stalk Kav or something.

  7. I like to think there isn't a way to 'game' the system... A few people on here who's opinion's and knowledge on this I respect greatly, say there isn't... But I also know the PERCEPTION amongst many... more than many,... is that they believe there is... And that needs to be something CGC is concerned with.

No matter how much the truth may be the truth, perception can overtake it. And that could be damaging.

Timing it so your book is set to be finalized when all the top graders are not around to do so is gaming the system, unless you want to think it was a coincidence. It shows that the person was pretty familiar with CGCs workings and from that I think it shows he is a pretty heavy submitter. Sending a newbie friend here to say the submitter was aware of this but don't see the need to respond, if true, is just weak.

The "top graders"? If the people who are in the office can't be relied on to detect resto and grade appropriately, then they shouldn't be allowed near the books.

What might make sense is to require the sign off of one of the most senior people for books over a particular value, but detecting trimming is different.

  8. Oh, actually, one more piece of info - he did say that interest in the cartoon was heating up again...

    hm

I didn't ask, and we weren't talking about prices or popularity of the book or anything like that - he just volunteered the info. Think it was in the context of what he was going to do after the 60 issues are up.

  9. Apropros of nothing, I'd just like to mention that I wandered up to John's table at LSCC towards the end of Saturday when there was nobody there, and had a good chat with him. Seems like a thoroughly nice guy.

He mentioned that there will never be a Chew blank - probably no surprise, but thought some might be interested to know!
