  1. From what I could tell from your story, they reneged on your dealings when someone offered 200 pounds - a big flag that the book was worth more than they thought and decided to let the auction run.

But to then decided to not honor the auction just doesn't make sense (if they've already said they're fine with shipping to the US) unless they think they can get more for it.

I just don't think that's a smart decision. You should count your blessing when this type of thing happens, imo. Then again, the amount of money I've left on the table over the years doesn't qualify me as a great expert haha.

  2. Could this be a case of a greedy seller thinking he/she might be able to get more for it? It sounds like it, to me.

No way I would turn down that much money for something I thought was worth maybe a few dollars. They were happy to sell it for $50...

I would send it anywhere in the world, Express and fully insured, for whatever it cost.

Great story, jt, thanks for posting.

  3. Got milk?

    Got delivered yesterday.

    Eh.

Nice artwork, but I can think of better ways to spend 4 grand. It's just not my cup of... milk?

    lol

I have a feeling the art market would blow your hair back if you flinch at $4k for the first time anyone ever saw a character in print that went on to 4 feature films, a TV series, a fifth feature film in the works, and endless millions in merchandising along with 25 consecutive years in publication.

Someone paid over $650k for a McFarlane cover with Spider-man nut-punching the Hulk.

There aren't a lot better ways to spend $4k in comic art.

I think that's a good price. Congrats on a great piece. What issue is that back cover from?

  4. Just like everyone is hoping to own the next Walking Dead #1. There isn't always rationale behind comic speculating. At least Superman Adventures # 5 didn't comic out last week. Explain how a MONTH OLD comic can be valued at $100 or even $50. It's the nature of the collecting "beast". One can either poo-poo it or ride the wave.....while it lasts.

    Spot on.

  5. Why are some people here so opposed to the rise in popularity of an obscure character with a killer design? I guess we can never know but I wonder how many people who are bashing Livewire are doing so because they don't own a Superman Adv 4 Superman adv 5.

I'm not opposed to the rise in popularity of a character. I'm saying the prices don't line up with the character's popularity and demand. People are paying money for the book as if the character has already hit it big, which isn't the case. SA 5 is due for a large correction. People are paying high prices on that book currently simply because they are HOPING that its the next BA 12 and they don't want to miss the boat.

You you may be right, but that's the market right now. Has been for two years now.

Don't go into the modern section.

  6. There is a general understanding, that there is a huge difference between a character's first appearance, and the first time the image of a character appears in print, right?

I mean, for 99.9% of us at least?

99.999999999% - All of us except MrWeen and the guy who just listed SA #4 on eBay for $99. :insane:

I like MrWeen's thinking... mainly because if Action Comics #12 ever catches on as "Batman's first appearance", I can retire early.

Looks like a sharp copy. :luhv:

  7.

    Shilltastic ;)

I ran a bunch of auctions this week. A lot of 2 feedback bidders pumping up prices and the ones that won are not paying. I'm not shilling so what the hell is going on? I this part of the hack? Is it to screw with EBay and not so much profit from the information they stole?

Sorry to hear you're getting shilled :( As darkstar mentioned, it isn't always the seller.

What people can sometimes do is artificially inflate an auction with shill bids in order to try and add value to their own item. If the bids aren't cancelled, the shilled price will also be recorded in the 'Sold Listings'.

I hate shills. I really do.

    lol Good luck to them...

DC is about to go on a rampage introducing new female characters to thier new 52 because.... they sell comics.

Is there a source for this?

  9. By "as understood by comic collectors" you must be referring to the comic's market value or presence in the narrative otherwise a first appearance should be determined by the definition of the word. Market prices do not concern me in this matter. If I collect all the Livewire appearance then I'm gonna need SA 4 to complete the collection. If I collect Harley Quinn appearances then I need Batman & Robin 1 because half her head is on a poster on the cover. Some people like to argue that an appearance has to happen in the narrative. That's rubbish. If Livewire's image appears in print at the end of SA 4 then that's her first appearance and there's really no debating that until someone finds an earlier image.

Same goes for Foom 2Daredevil 119 & Marvel Premiere 19 ( someone mentioned this the other day )

Also I'm not trying to change the market and I am very happy for anyone who makes a dime on this weeks flavor. I really just though it would be interesting to note that she appeared in the previous issue of SA. *edited for length*

I didn't want to say anything but I was the one who predicted that issue is going to be hot. Wait what? What issues are we discussing now? :o

My Omega Red pick is still What if 33. It came out the same month as X-Men 4. Unless X-men 4 is an absolute gem and a newsstand I see no reason to buy it.

Why is What If #33 relevant when every collector already owns a copy of X-Men (Vol. 2) #1, which features a non-story appearance of Omega Red?

    Because money :gossip:
