The only people that believe X-men #201 is Cable's first appearance are the people trying to sell BUYING them.
Fixed that for you.
I assume the people buying them are somewhat misinformed. I believe people pushing them as Cable's first appearance are doing so because it is in their financial interest to do so.

These Cable prices will come back down after this initial sell through, but it will be interesting to see where they level out at.
Yep. I would hate to be the buyer who is paying $600+ for a 9.8.
-
Fact is, Cable is kind of a boring character.
I can never imagine my 4 year old sleeping with a plush Cable doll, but he loves his baby Deadpool doll, as he calls him.
My teenage son loves Deadpool. The only thing he finds remotely interesting about Cable is that he's older than his father.

Nice to see NM #87 in 9.8 settling into the $500 range now.
Wouldn't be surprised if it catches up to 98 in the next few months.
No way.
Yeah, that is not going to happen.
As they said not going to happen. Deadpool is vastly more popular.

I actually thought the last Predator movie was insane in a good way. Shane Black, I'm in.
I thought it was very well done. Not as good as the first, but still a very good movie.

Here are some interesting books that are pretty hot:
That one's pretty cool because it's an internal document from Valiant 1993.
Photocopies were made about 10 years ago, but the originals with provenance like that one are the ones that get bragging rights.
is it actually hot? or just rare and valuable? I know sometimes they're both, but sometimes they're not.
It's probably a bit of both. Valiant has been hot for a while thanks to the rare combination of quality writing/art and film announcements.
That one finished over $350 and will end up closer to $400 for the buyer... he's in Sweden.
Not to mention there were another 3 or 4 I believe would have been buyers at $300.

I can only guess that ebay offers some buyers x4, x5 ebay bucks at certain times and also people have ebay bucks to spend. There are time limits and the fact that the Movie is rapidly approaching and it is ear marked for success, there are crazy buyers out there. The other is sellers with multiple copies creating false sales to keep high prices relevant. My third theory is God only knows. Can some clear up for me why either of these copies sold for $1000 when there are multiple copies for $900 and under?
I'm going with your third theory.
Just kidding they are all good theories. I didn't think about ebay bucks.

Newsstand variants in high grade are hard to find.
I totally agree. I sold my 9.8 Newsstand late in 2015. I was very pleased. I just couldn't bring myself to sell my Direct 9.8's for less.
Good thing you didn't, since a "direct edition" also just one-bidded for $1000 on ebay (no price difference).

Develop your own viewpoints on books and actually read them.
This says it all.
This specific thread is about value speculation. I think we can say that many books don't fall into the "I've read that" category. There are plenty of threads praising comics and stories that people like, gasp... just for the story.
If you can spot quality, you may easily be able to pick up books cheaply while the fan base develops. Reading the books is an important part to any speculative approach.
This is reason many people smart people were buying Saga #1 when it was $20 raw or $100 in CGC 9.8.
Yep.
Don't mind me.

Sweet!
It's always fun to hear of these unique items especially after so many years.

I'm considering stocking up on some pink Harbinger 0s. If my memory is correct that only had around 4,000 copies printed. I think long-term, this could skyrocket well past issue 1 even.
Smaller print run, but much much less significance.

Yeah, that's Jean.
Sansa Stark!
:cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:
I'm sure she's not attractive enough for some of the boardies though.
And yet she would beg for their affection continuously until they gave in.

This one impossible to find in high grade.
Speaking of tough ones to find:
Valiant!

Has anyone seen an uptick in actual selling prices of MOS18 in CGC 9.8 or just listings with inflated asking prices?
2015
December average $143, with 51 sales
November average $95, with 9 sales
October average $99, with 12 sales
September average $94, with 11 sales
August average $97, with 16 sales
I sold 2 copies. 1 @ 149.99 and 1 @ 159.99. Each book sold within a half hour of listing them.
Awesome! Looks like MOS 18 9.8 is the book to have right now.
I would probably wait a few months.

I'm still looking for a nice copy of that book.

I started my Valiant journey with Magnus #1. I bought every Valiant comic to the bitter end. That bitter end came twice if you count Acclaim.
I think Valiant's rise and fall may also be part of the reason why so many of us are still drawn to it. When Unity hit Valiant truly had hit on something the industry was missing. Then critical mistakes were made such as firing Shooter and then selling out to Acclaim. I think many of us look back and wonder what could have been. Everyone loves a tragic story. Luckily for us several fans bought the properties and have rebuilt the company.
Those are only mistakes from our perspective. The people in charge were business people and they did what they did so they could try to make a boatload of money. And they did.
I get that. They were very successful, but doesn't mean they didn't go about it wrong.

Cram on, brother! Learn me some Valiant.
So why are the "pre-unity" books more valuable than post- unity ones?
Higher quality stories and art, generally lower print runs, 1st appearances. Unity put Valiant on the map. After Unity the print runs grew very quickly and over time the quality dropped significantly.

My original A&A 0 Gold I received directly from Valiant.
Bosco,
That is incredible that you have your original gold book and it was graded a 9.8. Congrats!

I'm not saying it isn't or won't become a hot book again. I remember when it was hot in the early 90's. People saying it is Cable's first appearance to try and push the book is disingenuous. NM #87 is his first appearance. It is the same story with NM #86. NM #86 does not contain a cameo it contains an add. Does that mean the book can't heat up? No. I'm just saying this is not the first appearance of Cable.
