They did it for the only reason there is for a studio, $$$,$$$,$$$. Studios compete with one another just like any other industry. It is smart business for them to do this, just like it was for WW to set a date that will likely hurt the broader Pirates box office take. Both studios are playing the game.

I highly doubt that IMAX would take Pirates over WW if it was just the two films going head to head. The last Pirates movie was a flop domestically compared to the first three (it is the only one of the four that did not top $250M in its release year yet it had the highest ticket prices), and I doubt this one will do any better. It is a tired franchise that is banking on a leading actor who is nowhere near as popular now as he was a decade ago. That being said, if I am Disney I would "incentivize" IMAX to keep Pirates running for longer as part of a broader Disney/Marvel film deal. IMAX would comply since the other film franchises are worth more to them than Pirates is.

    Pretty much that ^

I didn't say it was underhanded or anything - just what I was told by the theater.  If they can cut into the WB take on their second weekend, why wouldn't they?  When you spend what it takes to make a Pirates movie, you don't want to lose the top spot on the second weekend - you do what you can to keep the word of mouth going, not get replaced.  Especially when such a deal could so easily be tied into some future incentives for MCU / Star Wars premieres

SS opened with $133+, so I think WW will do as well if not better, regardless of reviews.

So, interesting note on this - I think WW is going to have a tough time because of Disney.  I called my local large format (one of the old school IMAX screens where it's still legit 6 stories high).  They won't be showing WW because Disney cooked up a deal with a bunch of IMAX screens to keep extra showings of Pirates on the calendar.  Turns out, a bunch of the IMAX screens around me at AMC locations aren't showing WW opening weekend because of the commitment to Disney & Pirates.  I can only find 1 out of 4 in my area showing it IMAX.

That will definitely cut into revenue since so much is being made off both IMAX and 3D these days.  Could undermine the opening.

  3. From my CAF

Occasionally I'll see here a story about how some wife or girlfriend was amazing and bought an incredible piece of art for their significant other. Every time I saw something like that, I wished that my wife had enough comic knowledge to do the same. Let me be clear, my wife rocks and after 9 years of marriage I'm still super stoked I get to be with her. But, for as supportive as she is about my enjoyment of comics, she doesn't share that passion. Well, this Christmas, she blew me away with this surprise:

I can't be 100% sure because as a kid my love of super heroes didn't actually start with comic books - I didn't start collecting until much later so I didn't really keep track. But one of the very first (if not the first) comics I owned was Superman 121. The story wasn't really action packed (although it's amazing how relevant it still is today), but the cover really grabbed me - very powerful. Well, many years later I learned that cover was hanging in a local comic shop. I'm sure I showed my wife on one of the 2 occasions she's ever been there with me, but I was also sure she was only half paying attention. Boy was I wrong.

Without so much as hinting, she went to the shop and opened a negotiation with the owner to buy it for me. Took her a couple days of calling an going back in, but he finally let it go. An incredible gift and my first OA cover, from possibly the first book I ever owned (did I mention my wife rocks?)

Another series of exclusive variant covers celebrates the upcoming feature film BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE with variant covers for issues #50 of SUPERMAN, BATMAN AND WONDER WOMAN. Each sells for $10, and features a photo cover of each of the three principal actors in the film, Henry Cavill (Superman), Ben Affleck (Batman) and Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman).

Thanks - sorry I should have been more specific.  Was hoping for some of the poster art for the new WW movie.  Those Empire covers are beautiful and was hoping for a comic with the same :)  Thanks for the response though.

  5. The first time that happened to me at a price I could actually afford was actually about a month ago.  It was a Michael Turner page from his run on Superman/Batman (Supergirl) and I've been looking for a great affordable page from that series for years.  It was a tremendously exciting feeling even after having to sell a few things retroactively to be able to pay for it :)
