The Death of Captain Marvel page is back after being put on hold. Price has been reduced, so give it a looksee.

Many thanks to those who have reached out after reading my post. I have just posted part two of my NYC art con preview. You can check them out here.

Some highlights include a Death of Captain Marvel page, a Byrne OHOTMU cover, and an action packed 2-up Kirby/Kane/Esposito Hulk page!

In anticipation of the upcoming art con, I've listed a few items for sale on CAF.  All of these pieces will be at my table (with plenty of other stuff) on the day of the show. Unless someone buys it here first! Highlights include a Fabry Preacher cover, an early Perez Avengers splash, a classic Captain Marvel cover, and much more!

Thanks to Nelson for the shout out. I can't wait to see what he's bringing to the show. And Nick, well with a collection like his, who knows what will be at his table? Really, I'm very jazzed to see all the collectors coming out for this one. See you guys next weekend!

I'm just over the Bergen boarder, in Morris county. I always knew NJ had a bunch of collectors, but am mildly surprised to see how many are boardies.

It makes me think that maybe Northern NJ could start having some comic art meetups. I invite any local guys to PM me if they'd be interested in attending one.

A couple of pages from the X-Men/Teen Titans one shot came up on CAF about a year ago for 5k each. Both Simonson & Austin are notorious for holding their art, so I don't even know how the pages became available.

Man, I wish I had bought this when I had a chance...

Compared to some of Heritage's previous auctioneers, he doesn't seem so bad. At least he knows how to pronounce the artist's name!

That said, I pity anyone looking to bid live on a Zeck piece. You're gonna have to set your alarm clock to catch it!

I was a few hours late and saw it under sold items.

At the time Burkey had the companion Gammill #31 cover for $3k.

 

I'm amazed to hear about this. I purchased this cover back in early '14 and I can assure you that it cost me more than $86!

At the time, I thought I was getting the better end of the deal. But I see now that the seller did well, too.

I was the lucky collector to pull that in. I really like EVS's take on the character. The splash is not for sale, but feel free to check it out below.

I spoke to Felix the other day about the art to the Bat Who Laughs. Of course, I was too late to snag anything. It all sold out almost immediately after posting, which is not unusual for Felix's site. But what stuck Felix as odd was how many crossover collectors the character has. Guys like me (& Brian, apparently), who don't usually dive into the modern stuff, see something really cool in that character.

Hearty congratulations go out to the collector who got the cover. Considering your avatar, can we assume it's you, EdouardN?

Serious question: not looking for names or a list (but provide whatever you want), how many "whales" are in the hobby? I'm specifically referring to people that can and often do drop 6 figures on OA frequently (monthly or whenever they want). Excluding the high volume known dealers, of course.

I remember asking myself the same question about eight years ago.  And while I can give no definitive answer, my best guess would be that you could count them on your fingers. Very few collectors have the juice to hit six figures on any deal, and almost none of them do so nonchalantly. The price acceleration of the really high end stuff is enough to make even the wealthiest collectors think twice before a purchase. It's not just about being able to afford the art; a collector also has to feel good about the deal.

What I wonder about now is how many collectors out there can (& have) hit the 50k mark for something that they really want? Or even 25k? The whales have always been few & far between, but more & more collectors are getting comfortable playing at these levels.

A recent turn of events has forced me to skip the art con this year. Those of you who know me understand how much I wish I could be there. There are few things that I enjoy more than chewing the fat with other collectors & checking out what new art might be hiding in the room! I envy all of you who attend the show.

Since I will not be at my usual table, I've decided to post a few pieces for sale online for the next week or so. I guess you're right. The lot got one bid, so I assumed that it had sold.

Marvel Tales #37 sells on Thursday night for $12,500 (auction fees included). By Saturday morning it's on ebay for $20,000.
