  1. We're ALWAYS interested in Dennis Sunday strips here. Thanks for posting this and... Welcome to the Boards! Glad to hear you have some more Sundays to post. Locating and dating the Sundays seems to be the most elusive aspect of being a Dennis completionist, for me anyway, cause even when I can locate a small stack, they rarely have the dates on them. Hopefully one day we'll come across someone who has them all and knows the dates. Until then...
  2. Thanks for sharing this, Allen -- it's something I've never seen and will copy for the archives. The dramatic irony in the headline is funny, and it also reminds me of the Jackie Gleason line, which makes the gag work on several levels.
  3. That Flash 115 is frikkin' hilarious I forgot about that cover.
  4. All done! I will submit requests for the individual book compilations. Also, there are DC variants of two of the Marvel digests, plus there is the new giveaway I just uncovered that will need to be worked in. Finally, what about the different printings of, say, Giant #6, #7, #8, and #9? Any ideas about that?
  5. There is no indicia or no date anywhere, but there are old Dennis comics reprinted within: Dennis stories "Fun House" and "Dennis and the Lemon," a two-page Ramon Sanchez text story entitled "With Cape and Sword," a Screamy Mimi story entitled the same, two more Dennis stories, "Star-Gazing" and "Post No Bills," and a Dennis coloring page.
  6. JRW, I'm glad to hear it arrived safely! Also, I hope it is something you and your family can cherish for future generations to come. Your dad is truly one of the greatest artists in the history of the medium drawing one of the most popular AND best-selling comics in the history of the medium. He received virtually no recognition working as a ghost, and his recognition is long overdue. Giving you this page is the least any of us collectors can do. It is really unimaginable where Dennis the Menace would be today without your father's hard work. Around the time that page was up, I came across an item that has absolutely amazed me. Yet ANOTHER obscure Dennis giveaway surfaced on eBay. Until I saw it I was unaware of its existence. It is not dated at all, but judging by the paper and the stories reprinted within, I'd say it is definitely from the 1950s. Here is the cover:
  7. Hey, JRW, I thought you may be interested in this auction that features your dad's art. The seller is a well-known Dennis collector, and I've communicated with him via email and purchased items from him many times, so if you don't have this, go for it: Al Wiseman Shoe Kit Art Here is his description: "A scarce bottle of Griffin “Scuff Cover” Shoe Liquid, with box artwork by noted Dennis the Menace comic book artist Al Wiseman. (See pics below.) Not dated; early 1960’s?? The box measures approx. 4 1/2” high by 2” by 1 1/2”. Inside the box is a glass bottle of shoe polish. (There is no Wiseman art on the bottle inside the box.) Unique!"
  8. Yes, Allen, I did get the #44 scanned in. Thanks for the list of other needed scans. I have them all, so I just need to get to those digests which are at my other place for the time being. GCD sent me a bunch of info about how to go about indexing, so I will read through it and get started with the project. By the way, you did an amazing job with all those scans on the database. There are not too many people who have complete or near complete runs of these titles - let alone in decent shape. If there's any issues you're looking for to complete your set, Allen, let me know, as I have a ton of doubles. That being said, for anyone reading this, if you have a want list of needed Dennis issues, I just went through a stack of about 400 Dennis comics looking for upgrades and have a ton of high grade issues. Just send me a pm with needed Dennis issues and desired grades, and I'll get back to you. I will put up the remainder of the books on eBay in about a month, but I just wanted to give first dibs to all the great collectors here first.
  9. Aman, thanks for sharing! These are some of the nicest comics I've ever seen posted on these forums -- and in duplicate!?!?!
  10. I first saw these forums when looking at the CGC web pages for curiosity's sake. From time to time I would "lurk" here and check out posts. Over time, different forumites I knew through ebay transactions told me I should join here, Rick (Rickdogg) and Mike (onelevelupmp), so eventually I did. I became active just over a year ago when one of my auctions was being discussed in the silver age forum. Joe
  11. Allen, thanks for all the information. The holidays kicked my butt, timewise - - in a good way - - but I did finally get over to the GCD and scanned in Dennis #142 and #143. That means all 166 issues of the regular series have now been scanned. Quite an accomplishment and no need to do it here anymore. Dennis Grand Comic Database Link I also scanned in Friends #24 and Bonus #191. The site seemed to stop working after that and wouldn't take my scan of Giant #44, so I will return to it soon and scan in all remaining issues I can find since I have them all handy at the moment. The digests may require some more time for me to get to. Hope you and your family had a great holiday. Joe
  12. To share one Euro-Dennis with you and get that rolling, here is a British Dennis publication from 1962. I quoted below what I shared several months back to save myself from retyping, but here is one of the Dennis books. Notice he is called Just Dennis, as opposed to Dennis the Menace, since there is the British Dennis the Menace the American one is in a copyright conflict with. This book is a high quality hardback with full-color reprints of the American comics. Cover art looks like it is British as it looks completely unlike anything I've seen here in the U.S.
  13. Happy New Year to everyone as well! I hope you have a safe trip back to the States, and I look forward to seeing some Euro-Dennis.
  14. Great job on this, Allen! I was working on the giants back during the summer - up to #40 - and never got back to it. It was letting me scan the covers but not add info about the books, which, as you know, I've already indexed. I see you need scans of Dennis 142 and 143 and some giants, so maybe this weekend I will scan those in. I also noticed you still need the Friends 24 and 43, so I'll be glad to put those in as well. They are in a box that's not easy to get to right now, so I was hoping someone else would do it. Once Christmas is over I should easily have the time to help out more and maybe get all the covers scanned. This is a great project and well worth the time put into it. By the way...Where exactly is there a place to enter the Dennis paperback cartoon compilations and hardbacks? I see a few there but not all of them.
  15. JRW, the words you quoted are by Al Hoffman and Manning. Below is the sheet music to it. Music itself is copyrighted 1952, and the recording is 1953. The music is published by Santly-Joy, Inc. I have never heard it myself as I haven't had a record player since the 1980s. Seems a shame since I have all these records!
  16. Andrew, WELCOME TO THE BOARDS, and thanks for sharing! I visited your camp's website and found this bit of info interesting: "In the 1950s, Hank Ketchum, creater of Dennis the Menace, sent his son to Kennolyn Camps. His son, also named Dennis, did not want to attract any extra attention to himself and demanded being called Denny. Soon after his stay at Kennolyn, Hank created a "Dennis the Menace Goes to Camp" series in 1961. Uncle Max and Aunt Marion are, of course, some of the many characters. Dennis goes on Outpost, does his chores, and tries his hand at the many activities. More than 30 years later, we re-printed this entire collection in one complete authentic comic book. Contact our office at 831-479-6714 or camps@kennolyn.com with your mailing address and we will gladly mail you a copy of this fun keepsake!"
  17. The closing price for this kit, which, as I said, was a buy-it-now, was $299.95. Here is a link to the auction: Dennis Pressman Dentist Kit Auction - EBAY Here's a final image of the kit, the instructions:
  18. It's funny, but that head didn't look anything like Tommy to me... This is a good shot of the contents of the box:
  19. Here is an excerpt from the seller's description: "Made by Pressman in the early 1950's is the extremely rare Dennis The Menace "DENTIST SET" Playset. Comes with everything you see and that includes the Instruction Booklet. Dennis's friend Tommy is your patient and you can actually open Tommy's mouth to work on his teeth. Tommy's head is composition and has fairly heavy crazing but is intact..." I assume he meant "glazing" instead of "crazing"???
  20. Bill, to the best of my knowledge, Jay North never sang on the Dennis records. As a kid, I had many of these records, and I had always thought it was Jay singing since he often sang on the tv show - and clearly had his own records - but Philip Fox is the kid credited with singing as Dennis in the first person. (Sorry for the poor scan, but I have to use eBay pictures for those albums since they won't fit in my scanner. I've been shopping for a digital camera since my other one busted, so I should have one again soon. ) By the way, this incredibly rare Dennis item appeared on eBay. Super Dennis collector Mark, who posted here as lansdown, has told me about this, but I had never seen it. It came up on eBay and was instantly bought with a buy-it-now. The only reason I even know is cause the buyer, Sam, emailed me, which I'm grateful for, cause now I can finally see what this thing looks like! It is the Dennis the Menace Dentist Kit from Pressman:
  21. The other big eBay Dennis auction was for this original Al Wiseman page, which I won with one idea in mind: To give it to JRW since the companies screwed his dad out of his art and his family has none left. JRW, pm me with your address and I'll mail it to you when I get it.
  22. There were two big Dennis auctions on eBay this week. One was for one of the nicer #1's I've seen. It was billed as a fine plus and looks nice, but there is a water stain on the upper left corner. (I got a scan from the seller.) The closing price was $409.88, and it closed on December 2. To my knowledge this is the most publicly paid for a Dennis 1. Being a raw mid-grade, this gives us an idea of how high a slabbed true high grade would go for: a lot! Dennis #1 Auction
  23. And finally, I believe this last item will be the last of all the Dennis Menace recordings. To my knowledge, I have listed all the recordings. If anyone knows of anymore, please share. This last item is the soundtrack to the 1993 film:
