  1. So with no 9.8's on the market I'm guessing collectors are going after the next best thing?

The next 9.8 will get listed after these 2 9.6s go for around 700 each. These books going for a lot only solidifys the 9.8 being 1800-2K books.

  2. How did I amass these books? I was a broke college student from 1993-1997. I had no money. Then, I was a waiter from 1997-2000. I still had no money. Then, I was a sales clerk for an expendable airline parts company from 2000-2001. Still had no money. Then, in 2001, I was fired, and tried to sell comics full time on eBay...that lasted until Sept of 2003, when I had to get another job, because I could barely pay my bills.

Your life is like one big long box of drek, isn't it?

  3. Its hard not to see ASM 300 CGC 9.8 being a $1000.00 book very soon, especially with the big con season coming up. Anyone last bunch of auctions are in the 800-850 range, and if that one going on CL tomorrow night goes for 900+, it wouldn't be a surprise.

Prices tend to fall online when it's convention season then go back up in the winter months.

I've already seen ASM 300 hit 1000, but it's not the norm yet.

For books that are treading water or not trending upward, like...Walking Dead books, absolutely thats how it works during convention season. Sorry if that offends anyone about the WD comment, I know that gets everyone's panties in a bunch over in the Modern version of this thread.

ASM 300 is the complete opposite in that its a key copper book trending up before the movie news this past month. Prices may be under 1000.00 in a face to face con transaction or something like it, but its hard to imagine the days of finding this book for $675 or so every once in a while sticking around.

  4. Whoever is a product of the 80's knows how great that decade was. I was born in '78, had my first skateboard by '82/83, saw all those amazing movies from that time, the music was great especially compared to today's standards, and let us not forget the boom of toy's and tech that would forever change the face of the planet we live in today.

    NES

    MOTU

    GI JOE-3 3/4" of course

    Army Ants

    M.U.S.C.L.E.

    Inhumanoids

    Transformers

    Goonies

    Red Dawn

    Friday the 13th

    Nightmare on Elm Street

    Gremlins

    Conan the Barbarian

The list goes on, but to those who cherish this decade like I do, show some love with a big.........

    (thumbs u

If there is a cooler way to spend 100 minutes in the mid eighties as a 13 year old boy, I don't know it.

  5.

Everyone keeps saying Rocket is going to be huge with kids. Parents are OK with their kids watching and adoring a character with huge guns blazing a lot (killing)? I don't see how this would be OK for Saturday morning cartoons.

Why wouldn't they be? Today's parents grew up watching GI Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Transformers cartoons.

Exactly. Parents already know what they are getting into with a film like GoTG.

And knowing is half the battle,

  6. do you guys think scalped being optioned by "WGN America" makes it more or less likely to succeed?

I feel like the bigger guys are more likely to drop something once started, but they also are more likely to spend the money necessary to make something successful. It kind of cuts both ways.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any AMC original series "hits" before Walking Dead came along, so maybe lightning strikes?

    Really? Mad Men, Breaking Bad.

Never watched either. That's why I said "off the top of my head"

Try getting your head out of your ?

  7. I found a super nice copy at a local show, Dealer had a price of VF/NM for $65, I asked him if he'd take $50 and he took it, It has a printer's crease (non color breaking) and a few small non color breaking spine creases, picked this up for Comicartfan, I think it's 9.6 - 9.8 with a press.

Does buying books from your brother really count?

    Jim

Wow talk about not reading what I wrote...

You said you bought a book from your brother, what did I misinterpret?

Your other book didn't show up with a scan? :sorry:

    Jim

Wanna read that last sentence I wrote one more time? Starting with "Picked this up for Comicartfan"

Let me answer that for him: no, he doesn't. : lol

  8.

This part is up to all of us. PGX trashed their rep, the Vault is still new and I haven't heard of any concrete proof of wrong doing. The problem isn't with CGC in this aspect but rather all of us. For every 10 of us that say, screw CGC lets try the Vault or whatever new company pops up, there will at least be another 10 who best case scenario, don't care and keep going to CGC. People are so used to them that it's next to impossible to dethrone them.

CGC didn't create monopoly, we the consumers gave them one. Someone has a PGX book we laugh and criticize, same thing with the Vault.

We created this, it's our faults. I'm just as guilty, if I wanted a book graded, I go to CGC because people seemingly lose credibility if they don't.

Well, maybe. The problem with monopolies is that they are created by circumstance, that is, it's not necessarily what the market will bear, but what the consumer will bear in terms of acceptable choices. Your choices disappear many times over when, as it was mentioned in this thread already, CGC engages in acts to manage your ability to make a choice, like engaging in marketing agreements with vendors and retailers across the board, making it legally impossible for other companies that want to be in the business of grading comics to gain any sort of marketshare, which allows consumers to enjoy the results of competing businesses.

The problem is that, at least in this industry, nothing has to change: this isn't regulated by any law, which serves as the basis for those cases you read about between Microsoft and whoever.

In the end, I really don't believe "we created it," but I also believe that it was completely inevitable, considering the (lack of) circumstances to stop it.

  9. Bought a Marvel Graphic Novel 3 and 4, and a Preacher 12 bagged from Mike. This is my second transaction with him and the success of the first sale with him is the reason I came back to the well.

Great transaction, books arrived fast, safe, and in better condition than described. Will deal with anytime.

  10.

To boil it down to simply "being married and having kids" is a gross, broad oversimplification. You've made several broad assumptions that are easily disproved.

There are multitudes of people who are married with children who think they are the center of the universe, despite that spouse and child(ren). And I don't mean in the sense of criminality, though there certainly is that. There are, for example, "stage moms", who force their children to do things they either failed at themselves, or were not allowed to do, or simply because they miss their own glory days. There are people who have children merely as accessories, to brighten up their holiday cards. There are people who have children so that they, themselves, will have someone to care for them in their old age. There are people who get married because they, themselves, don't want to be lonely. There are people who get married because they are horny. There are people who get married so they can be secure.

All of these things, and many, many more, aren't all necessarily bad things, but they ARE self-serving. You give to get. They are selfish, because humanity is selfish.

And of course, there's a difference between being humiliated and being humbled. But both are useless if they don't lead to correction.

There are, on the other hand, people...very, very few....(and probably none on this entire board) who "live alone", whose very lives are a shining example of giving, and genuine giving, not giving to receive, which is what nearly everyone else does, whether they know it or not. They give without fanfare, without trumpets, without even letting their left hand know what their right hand is doing. That is real humility.

And very, very, VERY few people possess it. And it certainly has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with being married and having kids. When I said it takes a power outside of themselves, I do not mean "other people", whether they are your wife, your children, your parents, or anyone else.

You jumped the shark, man. 'Bout 6 posts back. You. Jumped. That. Mother. .

  11. I just put my Manifest Destiny 1-3 + Ottley #1 variant on eBay, BIN for $100.

Yes, that is an aggressive price. I might be leaving $ on the table by not getting them graded, though.

No, I don't expect it to sell right away. Maybe not at all. Fine by me either way.

    :D

    -slym

The more I think about it, the less I like selling them right now.

I think I am gonna pull the listing down.

lol Pretty sure this is what Broke As A Joke was referring to.

You keep grinding out that rent money, Joe. It's noble work you're doing. (thumbs u

  12. Star Wars #1 CGC 9.8 @ $480 & 39 watchers. Oh my! :o

Off topic somewhat, but heads up on that seller. I left the negative feedback in his feedback section, due to him listing (with pics) a certain SW 1, and then sending me different SW1 except it was horribly centered and just looked lousy. He refused to speak to me about it until I filed a complaint and got my $$$ back.

He still sell those books, so just be aware what you are getting into if you deal with him.

Go ahead and list the auction please.

Guy is 100% FB Seller & Toolhaus shows he hasn't had any issues since 2005.

Not saying you aren't wrong, you just cant drop something like that in here on a seller without some proof.

You are looking at the wrong listing and seller.

The link from whetteon opens up a SW 107 CGC 9.8. If you look to the top of that listing, there is a link for the SW 1 CGC 9.8. The SW 1 CGC 9.8 is the auction I won and had the issues with the seller ter*mand - he doesn't have 100% feedback. The seller I was referencing did not have any issues in his feedback in 2005.

Here is the auction I won and got the runaround on:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Star-Wars-comic-1-CGC-Graded-9-8-WHITE-PAGES-SUPER-RARE-1st-Print-LOW-PRICE-/201006034648

Here is a outline of what the issue was (this is what I posted with regard to the claim I opened with ebay:

Your message to eBay Customer Support:

"I received the item from the seller, however, it is not the item that is pictured or described in the auction listing. The item pictured and described in the auction listing is Star Wars #1, graded 9.8 with white pages, CGC Serial #0976602004, and the serial number for the comic is located on the front of the grading case, located on the top part of the case in the center. The item I received is Star Wars #1, graded 9.8 with white pages, CGC Serial #1211808002. Comics inspected and assigned a grade by Certified Guaranty Company (CGC) are all given a unique serial number to identify that specific comic, and then encapsulated in a plastic casing with its unique serial number on the front. The reason the seller switched the books is that the comic pictured in the auction listing (#0976602004) is perfectly centered and in perfect condition. The item the seller sent me (#1211808002) is badly centered and not as described or pictured in the auction listing. If the seller would have included pictures of the actual item being sold, I would have never bid on the auction, let alone a $550 bid. Because of the unique CGC Serial numbers assigned to each comic the CGC grades, it is easy to discern and distinguish the difference between comics. I am more than willing to send pictures of the item received from the seller to confirm the difference in serial numbers with the item described in the auction listing, and also the differences in the appearance and condition of the comics. I want a full refund, including my shipping costs. I understand the seller had stated that no returns are accepted, however, given the seller did not send the correct item that was listed, described, and being sold in the auction listing, the seller has not performed its legal obligation with regard to the contract between the seller and buyer. The seller's "no returns" policy could only apply to the non-return of the item actually sold, which was not delivered to me in this matter."

In the meantime following my full refund, the seller has threatened me with a whole bunch of mess and all the rest of the stuff that comes with dealing with scam artists. I believe I saw the seller doing the exact same thing after the case was closed with ebay, listing a SW 1 CGC 9.8, and using pics of "the good one" (#0976602004), which in hindsight, he may or may own, or even have in his possession at all.

I have never dealt with the seller of the SW 107 CGC 9.8., and my comments are and were not directed to that seller in any way. All I am trying to do is give a heads up to other bronze age collectors on a seller that presents a real chance to have to waste what is my most limited resource, time, and save people the headache.

  14.

Your biggest risk at this point is quality of production. Having major talent attached to a project is no guarantee of success. Johnny Depp couldn't save The Lone Ranger.

What you will get is more interest in the property prior to release, versus having a bunch of no-names cast.

On a channel that couldn't deliver the hype of the new Dr. Who to the states.

Have you been to any conventions lately...? I see more Dr Who costumes than just about anything else.

I can't help but doubt the executive producers of PP are pinning their hopes and dreams to anyone wearing a Dr. Who costume at whatever rando convention you are referring to.

  16. lol settle down bro

make sense "bro", and feel free to demonstrate how i am not "settled".

    lol

However, if you are just mindlessly trying to pick sides in a debate not involving you, and going with who you like/relate to, then refer to fastballspecial's post ;)

Fine, you win the internets. How about taking war this to PM, or another thread, or anywhere but here, or just shut up.

  17. You should create a twitter account. Just because it might help you write down yours ideas without writing an essay every time.

when you've run out of points to make, and have no answers, change the subject. (thumbs u

I'll keep questioning things, pushing for discussion and debate, and generally helping people.

If others want to try and squelch other people's opinions by trying to claim who is or isn't "allowed to post", or try to talk down any discussion of suspicious auctions lest more people become educating on possible ways to shill, etc etc....

well hey...good luck with that (thumbs u

It's certainly not going to work with me.

    lol settle down bro
