  1. Love your MM 50 & 60, BTW. I posted this shortly after SDCC, but it kinda got lost in the shuffle during the rapid fire discussion over ouija boards & imbibing ouza... (Don't ask... ) Anyway, in case anyone missed this kewl red hot Schomburg, I think it's worth a second look. Very cool book....
  2. thanks silver surfer.... but I can't really say (thumbs u I love the caginess of that response. I thought it was diplomatic...
  3. really great cover and a sharp book.. one of my favorites
  4. Not a big DC guy but this was a favorite cover...
  5. Really nice book.. the colors are striking
  6. IMO the "clutter" is one important element that gives it his signature. The action is held together by single dominate forms or a center of interest...compositions are not fragmented even though busy.. The cartoon characteristics coupled with overt violence add a irony that is real for that era, unlike the fake irony in so much self conscious contemporary art. Also I like the solid banner as it allows the type face not to interfere with the composition...
  7. I agree, I'm just saying some people including myself...(especially since CGC) put more emphasis on cover art now and there are more visually interesting covers than Marvel 9.
  8. I think this is an argument between the writers and the artists... story significance vs. visual excitement... Clearly many more books sport covers more interesting than Marvel 9.. Speaking of Cap 46, that's a sensational copy you have. Possibly an unrecognized pedigree copy? It's possible as many pedigree's do not have markings... I do think that Marvel #9 is a benchmark cover that typifies the Timely look. The previous early Marvel issues have a more pulp characteristic. Marvel 1 is a benchmark book as its the first Marvel comic and blends in some of the edge borrowed from the pulps. I remember a time when Marvel 1 overshadowed Action 1 in monetary and collectable value. Times change and what people deem valuable changes. In my opinion our visual sensibilities are often colored by nostalgic and trophy like values. I don't think that Action 1 or Detective 27 or Marvel 1 or 9 carry the strongest covers, just significant ones.
  9. And like you, I just don't understand the appeal for a Cap #46 or MM 40/44/46 over a MMC #9. I don't put them in the same ballpark as a MMC #9. I think this is an argument between the writers and the artists... story significance vs. visual excitement... Clearly many more books sport covers more interesting than Marvel 9..
  10. Are 9.6's just raining from the sky? Gorgeous book. Welcome to the club! (thumbs u Thanks Any other spideys? this posting is for issue #3? guess 2 comes before 3
  11. Congrats on the 44 & 66! Both are tough in grade! I settled for a 7.0 on the 66 and that's one of my all time favorite Schomburg covers. I did manage to compensate for it though... Unfortunately, I couldn't get the full frame into Photobucket editing without a bit of skewing. The IPad image resolution & lighting doesn't do this work justice. Love the way Alex finished out the details in his gouache composition, inarguably one of the best Timely cover recreations. Agreed, Cat.... I'd love to see it one day, I'm sure this original painting is better than any reproduction, Schomburg was amazing
  12. recently picked this one up for much much less....a bit more common but also a great cover...
  13. I was wondering who ponied up for that one! My kids certainly didn't.. I paid through the teeth... And to think Harley offered to me last month for 40% less than it went for...that's why I didn't bid higher. Wish he offered it to me....Arggggg.... Im not a dealer or dealer/collector...so I guess I'm entitled to be stupid at times... there are two 9.4's and one 8.0 and then it goes to 2 6.5's..... If the two 9.4's never see the light of day as I believe... it will be hard pressed to find another in grade...Its one of the tougher golden age books to find, at least in my experience..
