  4. There seems to be pretty solid knowledge among collectors about which titles were factory trimmed starting when and on what edges, so lets hope whoever grades them for CGC has this knowledge. I have noticed some pulps to have a cover wrap on certain copies that lines up with the top, and might superficially look like trimming, but isn't. Then of course there is defacto trimming caused when enough of the overhang breaks off when the cover stock gets a bit brittle. What color label books get I'm not that concerned with as long as the trimming is noted and grade factored. As it is a lot of less experienced pulp sellers miss trimming all the time. I'm curious as to how missing back covers will be graded, as this is pretty much a .5 for comics, but it's clear that pulp buyers are a bit more accepting of this perhaps more frequent flaw, and I typically see these sort of books graded in the FR to GD range by pulp sellers. Another factor is spine fading, which obviously impacts grade, but it's never been that clear to me that there is any universal agreement on just how.
  5. The prices realized in this auction explain why three pulps I've had sitting on ebay for months got snapped up early this morning The price on that Spider pulp is insane, even for this auction, though it broke out in a bidding war early. It sold for over $6600 (does that include premium?), and it's not even high grade. Sure it's a classic cover, and a case could be made for it being the most classic in a run full of them, but other than the first issue, the next highest price realized for a Spider pulp was $891 for another classic cover in better shape, and that was a strong price. While sellers will no doubt try and use the $6600 price as benchmark, I'd be willing to bet when another copy comes up for auction it will realize a price far lower than that. I'd be shocked if there were more than two people bidding on it after it passed a few hundred dollars considering how early it jumped out in price.
  6. I watched it because it cost me nothing extra, and I enjoyed the first GoTG and Super. I like superhero movies that don't take themselves seriously, so Thor Ragnarok, the first Deadpool, and the first Antman are the ones I've enjoyed in recent years, though I've missed watching many of the rest, especially DCU movies. It was okay, the way the second GoTG was okay, enough humor and goofiness to keep me watching. The plot was your basic paint-by-numbers action film with no surprises story, but the cast was good. Maybe I'm getting old but I find it harder to enjoy bloody hyper-violence even if it's done in a slapstick fashion than might have when I was younger, so that got a bit tiresome. I gather it's better than the previous SQ movie, which I don't plan on ever watching, and I can see why people like it, but the reviews are more gushing than it probably deserves.
  7. So back at the end of May I win an item on ebay for around $50 or so. I buy a lot of stuff, so I didn't notice I hadn't gotten it until nearly two weeks later, and sure enough the sale had been cancelled and I'd been refunded shortly after the auction ended. Normally I'd just let it go, but I noticed the same item had been sold a week later by the same seller as a BIN for around $120. I looked up the reason for cancelling, and the seller had chosen "problem with buyer's address" which I knew was B.S. I still considered letting it go, but was in a mood and left negative feedback. Within minutes the seller buys a $6 item from me (the cheapest I have available), before I had gotten around to blocking him, which I probably should have done first. I send the buyer a message asking if the purchase was made in order to leave retaliatory feedback, and they respond with "I look forward to receiving it." I mail the item, probably not what they expected, and figure they'll either want to return or just leave some sort of negative feedback for no reason whatsoever. Well, the 60 day window passed, and nothing. Maybe they thought better of playing games after cooling off, I don't know.
  8. They (DH) don't include the covers either for the most part, but they do seem a cheap way to read the stories based on ebay selling prices.
  9. Your ebay rating expressed as percentage only covers the previous 12 months regardless of how many transactions you have, but your feedback number accounts for all feedback since you joined.
  10. I suppose one reason folks put up with these ridiculous turnaround time is they figure their books might be worth more by the time they get them back, though it seems dicey for those flash in pan "hot books" that drop after initial excitement wanes.
  11. If one expects to return a book after it has been cracked out of the slab because one finds issues with the book not mentioned on the label, then one better be prepared to return the book as puchased, meaning in the unopened slab it came in. Impossible you say? Exactly. CGC misses stuff sometimes, and other times may even see stuff that isn't there (questionable trimming notations on what looks more like a miscut). I suppose if you could prove a seller sold something they new was misrepresented by the CGC label, you'd have a case for return, but the whole reason pay to have books slabbed to sell is to avoid arguments about grade and whether or not work was done, and what to call it when it has been. If you crack it out and disagree, or even if CGC comes up with a different grade or designation on resub, that's not the seller's problem, that's your problem (or possibly to your benefit), and maybe CGC's if you can convince them they really blew it.
  12. I use ebay's international standard delivery option. It's cheaper than USPS First Class International, even though they charge the buyer enough extra to cover the fees they collect on shipping charges (so you as the seller are not paying them). Be aware that Ebay just started collecting EU VAT on orders from Europe and charging FVF on that, the same as they do for sales tax in the U.S. Add to that their additional fee for foreign currency conversion, and the effective FVF on items sent to Europe is around 16% including managed payment fees. I charge an additional handling fee on foreign sales of roughly 3% to defray the additional expense.
  13. It turns out I have just one pulp for this thread, and it's a bit of a beater. DIME MYSTERIES March 1937 FR/G tan pages with some brittleness/small chips at bottom corner some pages. Still readable. Front cover is barely attached, just 1" in the middle connected. Small piece out of foot of spine. Still presents decently for the grade. Bondage menace cover. When the Bat Man Thirsts - vampire story by Fredrick C. Davis. $90 shipped. SOLD
  14. MARGIE #49 VG ow/w pages Classic Dan DeCarlo cover. Last issue. $250 shipped.
  15. STARTLING COMICS #22 GD- cr/ow pages spine is split/torn half way up, but single staple still securely holds cover on. 1.5" tear into cover. Nice color! Great Schomburg War cover. $300 shipped. SOLD
  16. AUTHENTIC POLICE CASES #2 VG- cr/ow pages Structurally solid, but a scrape, a tiny gouge(at guy's lapel), a stain, and a spot of gunk on cover. Nick Cardy GGA cover. $180 shipped.
  17. I've owned four different copies of this book, but none as nice as this, sweet!
  18. I'm thinking the designation should be changed from "cream" to "butterscotch" Flavor based descriptions would be more accurate anyway. Vanilla French Vanilla Eggnog Custard Butterscotch Toffee Tell me those aren't easier to accurately visualize than the current page color designations.
  19. That's all for today. Will have three pulps to add Thurs or Fri, and maybe a few more GA. Not sure why my TJ bible thread got yanked, waiting for a reply from mods, but are they not allowed to be listed on the boards anymore?
  20. FANTASTIC #11 (Ajax-Farrell) G/VG ow pages 1&1/2" split at top of spine, 1/2" at bottom. Cover attached at both stapes, though a split on front at bottom staple. Some blue discoloration on cover. Doesn't look like staining, might be a printing defect, but unsure. $180 shipped.
