  1. I have been heading in the opposite direction, less and less Ebay and now almost never. But for me its not simply about the negative things, the things I don't like about Ebay, its the positives in the selling format here, the "forum" and the unfolding threads. Its obviously way more interactive here, and for me that is much more exciting.

To be able to communicate with the seller on the fly as it happens, to negotiate from scratch with (usually) rapid responses, the thrill of the hunt, I would not want to give that up.

I do not find the risks here any greater, the rewards are substantial, and for myself I have lost nothing by leaving Ebay. 2c

+1...Well said. Since I found these boards 5 months ago, I would say I've done 95% of my comic buying and 100% of my comic selling here...my only regret is that I didn't find these boards sooner!

  2. How is it possible that THIS thread just got resurrected? Before xelorknox brought this back to life today, the last post in the thread was in October '12. The last sales thread listed in the G/S/B sales forum has a January '13 date (on page 80!), so obviously there is mod deletion of inactive threads. Assuming that as of yesterday this thread no longer appeared in the G/S/B thread list, where could xelorknox have found it (in some cache somewhere?), and having found it, how could it come back to life if it had been deleted from the forum? Does this reveal a system glitch? (shrug)

dont know that its actually deleted from the forum cause you can get to it thru a googled search no problem. The forum just seems to have an 80 page display limit for the forum, so the rest of the data is there, just you have to go in thru a different door to get to it...

Ahhhh...that makes sense...an 80 page display limit. So, question now is...why don't the mods delete sales threads after they have been inactive for, say, 6 months?

  4. Jeremy just purchased a nice stack of Jumbos and a Planet from me - smooooooth transaction - rapid payment, great communication - very promptly let me know when he received the books, which I greatly appreciate. Look forward to more deals in the future! (thumbs u

  5. now we've got to press books to reach the grades advertised in a sales thread?

This is indeed disturbing. May be too early to call it a trend, but I've noticed an increasing number of raw listings where a seller seems to be asking more than the value of a book in its current grade because of pressing potential (for example, a seller might list a book as a 7.0 and point out that it could probably press higher, and then post a BIN price as if it's a 7.5'ish). If you think about human nature, this would almost have been a predictable consequence of the introduction of pressing into the marketplace - it's a :censored: shame - I really hope that the majority of us comic collectors resist this nonsense so that it doesn't become the norm...

  6. I might prefer..."Hey Dillon! stop smirking, get in the corner and face the wall till you honor your commitments".

    (thumbs u

Yep - and we also want to say "Hey Jo Seph! Stop being so gracious and press charges so we can prosecute this *spoon*!"

  7. If this is were we're going to set the bar for a successfully completed transaction then the Probation list is going to become about as worthless as the Kudos thread.

Again, let me stress that I agree that this whole thing reeks. However, at the risk of beating a dead horse, let me again point out that under the current regime, "we" don't set the bar for a successfully completed transaction - the parties directly involved in the transaction set that bar. Based on the last word from the parties directly involved in the transaction, the transaction seems completed. Now, it seems that an amendment might be under consideration to change this...

  8. Much like the police having the ability to press charges on behalf of a victim, if the community agrees that a situation warrants it, I think we should be able to nominate an individual.

    Suck it, ACLU sheep! :sumo:

Now this is getting interesting (sincerely). This is indeed a relevant analogy. But, just so we understand what we're proposing here, note that the abililty of the police (or, a district attorney) to press charges on behalf of an unwilling victim does not just materialize out of thin air - that ability is formally granted in the relevant legal code...i.e., the rules. As it currently stands, our rules grant no such authority. So, what we have identified here is a gap in our rules, one that perhaps warrants an amendment. This amendment would necessarily need to outline the circumstances (and procedures) under which the "community" could nominate a person to a public list for a perceived injustice inflicted on a specific member of the community that is no longer "pressing charges." Once that is done, then we would have to figure out whether we could make that amendment retroactive....

  9. It doesn't seem like any one is telling Jo Seph he should be happy...quite the opposite, in fact. It certainly would be reasonable for Jo Seph to demand not only the additional money out of pocket, but also any "excess sales proceeds" garnered from the transaction with Bleuhawaii. And, like most of you, this whole thing sticks in my craw, and I will certainly remember it if I ever come up against a potential transaction with LongDillon.

Having said that, let me put emotions aside and go legalistic...I just went back and re-read the probation list rules. It seems to me that the rules are set up such that it is up to Jo Seph to determine when this case is closed per his satisfaction, and it sounds like he is satisfied (again, he is being really gracious about this whole thing...but, that is his prerogative). Emotionally, we may want Jo Seph to revive his nomination of LongDillon to the probation list until these additional damages are satisfied, but doesn't seem like that's our call to make...

Looks like this was the last word:

I'm out roughly 60$ but I'm not complaining. I'm happy I got anything back tbh.

So, under the current rules, case closed, right? In other words, if Jo Seph says "let's move on," then it sounds like we move on...none of the rest of us can nominate LongDillon to the probation list or otherwise dictate additional settlement terms under the current rules, because we weren't parties to the transaction, correct?

  10. Just received a book from Dave that he donated in the Fazybones charity thread. Not only did Dave donate his book (in better condition than described) and cover shipping, but on top of that he snuck a cool extra freebie into the box for me, packaged beautifully. What a class act. (worship)

  11. As a noob who has sold a few things here (thank you for trusting me, buyers - I don't take it for granted), just wanted to give my 2c (which I'm sure are only worth 1 cent, because again, I'm a noob). In general, at an isolated transaction level I think market forces work pretty well for controlling these things (e.g., if a noob seller posts a sales thread and no one buys from him/her, problem is solved). However, as a mechanism to discourage the volume of new members who come here only to try a quick sale and have no intentions of sticking around and becoming a part of the ongoing community, I think that having some prerequisite in place for selling is not a bad idea - not sure post count is the way to go, though, as others have pointed out. It's just too easy to rapidly post these guys  (thumbs u all over the place to inflate the post count.

Rather, how about this idea...state the requirement in terms of a "purchase count." That is, before a person can sell on the boards, the person has to have successfully engaged in some specified number of buy transactions (as validated via their feedback thread), which would demonstrate that the person at least has the potential to be trustworthy when it comes to actual dollars and books. In fact, I self-imposed this requirement when I joined...I bought a number of books and built up some feedback before ever even thinking of trying to sell something...just seemed like the natural way to proceed. Further, this would by construction require that a person has engaged with the community before partaking in the privilege of selling on the boards. One problem is, as pointed out in the context of the post count requirement, I have no idea who would set the minimum "purchase count", or how enforcement would be handled.

Having said all that, I also agree with this, for obvious reasons:

Obviously, if your register date is before the rule has been applied, you would be grandfathered in.

  12. Interesting and useful info. (thumbs u

    +1 (thumbs u Thanks, Dr. Love...impressive research.

Dang, you are a rough and ungenerous lot!

...you probably need to acquaint yourself with the eBay search function and Boolean logic.

It took me only a few minutes to find these, and they represent only a handful, specifically CGC 9.8 books currently listed on eBay without "CGC" in the title.

But try that trick at non-stratospheric grades and see how easy it is...I just tried. For example, try searching '8.0 -cgc' or '7.0 -cgc' and it's pretty difficult to find these cases. One reason seems to be that a lot of people selling raw comics tend to put grades like '6.0', '7.0', 8.0, etc. in the title, whereas not alot of raw sellers will grade a raw book as a 9.8, it seems. Stated differently, it's much more likely that a search for '9.8 -cgc' will uncover CGC slabs than will a search for '8.0 -cgc', or '7.0 -cgc', etc. If it's harder for us to find the non-stratospheric grades that are CGC without 'CGC' in the title, it's probably harder (i.e., more costly) for the GPA team to find them, as well. So, a natural testable hypothesis in this hypothetical research project might be as follows: it is more likely that GPA will miss CGC sales that don't have 'CGC' in the title for grades below 9.0 than for grades above 9.0 (or something such as that).

If 75% of the books that sell in the above list are missed by GPA, then I'll eat one of Blowie's half-eaten food oddities.

If less than 75%, then you eat it.

    Fair? :)

Probably no longer fair to use this particular list for the competition, because it has now been posted on the CGC boards, therefore increasing the probability that the GPA will become aware of these particular books... :gossip:
