  1. I agree with all of those but believe there is actually a 'first eleven' of early SA Marvel titles which includes X-Men. Also, I wondered if you have AF #15 to supplement your ASM #s1-10 set?

Still, it's quite an achievement to be just eleven issues away from completing first ten issue runs of those ten titles. Best of luck in hunting down the missing numbers.

  2. Hi Brian

Assuming we're going to benchmark future registry scores against Overstreet 9.2 values then I've identified a number of books where there there is currently a variance of circa 50% or more between registry 9.2 points and current Overstreet (Volume 52) value in that grade.

As such I'd be grateful if you could review registry points on the following books.

    Many thanks for considering.

  3. I remember it well. In fact Poyntons are still trading in the Derbion Shopping Centre and continue to carry an awesome array of new magazines, but not many new comics.

Derby outdoor market on the Morledge in the 1960s was also a great place to buy 'old' American comics as well as copious quantities of Fantastic and Terrific. Everything was 6d. and the proprietor didn't feel the need to mark them up with a felt pen. Anything over two years old made you feel like you'd discovered an ancient -script!

Keep in mind that points in the registry are for entertainment purposes only.

They do not, and will never, reflect market value.

I want to get away from points being the determinate factor in top sets. If I had my way, sets would be ranked by:

    Set Completion Percentage

    Percentage of comics with images

    Percentage of comics with descriptions

(BTW, this is how we determine Award Winners)

How to accomplish this goal, without major coding changes, remains a significant challenge.  I'm not sure that it can be done in the Registry's current configuration.

    But, a boy can dream....

I can't give specific examples at this time, and I may have to scrap the whole thing eventually.

Brian  - this doesn't seem terribly optimistic considering this topic started over three months ago and the This Score Needs Fixin' thread was locked down last September.

Many good and thoughtful ideas have been put forward since then so could you let us know if you have any timescales in mind to complete this review and institute a new Registry scoring system?

I'd like to request a few more reviews for Silver and Bronze books where Registry points have slipped behind current market trends.

For convenience I've used the 9.4 grade as an indicator of market trends for specific books in order to compare current registry points with latest reported GPA sales prices as per the table below.

    • 8.5 - $2500 - June 2021

  9. I agree that it feels a little incongruous that a few key comics can account for 50% or more of the total points value for a particular registry set. Nevertheless it is important the registry should, as the website states, reflect the scarcity, desirability and certified grade of each comic. Therefore I would not support the idea that there should be a scoring cap or particular comics should be completely excluded from the registry because of their extreme high value.

As a long term collector and a collector of runs I am signed up to the notion that there should be some recognition of completion rates for particular sets. Some excellent suggestions have been put forward and there seems to be consensus that any change should be well publicised and simple to administer. If this were to be developed I would suggest the maximum completion bonus should be restricted to a percentage of the total value of each set, perhaps around 25%.

One issue that doesn't appear to have been raised in this regard is the potential distorting effect of the same comic in different sets - and I confess that I do include the same comic in different sets myself. The existing rules are that if the same comic is entered in more than one set, its points are only counted once for the purpose of calculating Total Registry Points. The proposition of a completion percentage for different sets would therefore appear to create a loophole whereby the same comic in different sets would be credited as part of the completion bonus for each set, and therefore be aggregated into Total Registry Score. A radical, but no doubt deeply unpopular, solution would be to restrict each comic to being allowed a slot in one set only. However a concomitant benefit of this approach would be to prevent owners from using the same few comics to monopolise the top ranks in different, but similar, sets. To give an obvious example there are numerous sets which include Amazing Fantasy #15.

Interested to know if fellow collectors have any thoughts on that suggestion?

I also agree it is timely to recognise the desirability and generally higher prices commanded by comics from CGC recognised Pedigrees. Any change to the scoring methodology would also present an opportunity to adjust the algorithm to score Pedigree comics at the same premium as Signature Series comics.

  10. Hi Matt

Thank you for the recent updates you've done on review requests. To reiterate Gotham Kid's comments, it's great to have proactive administration of the Registry to ensure it continues to reflect the market.

I'd like to request a few more reviews of Silver & Bronze Age books where Registry points have fallen behind current market values. The books listed below currently have significant or noteworthy disparities and once again I've used the 9.4 Universal Grade as a barometer of relative values for Registry points and latest reported GPA sale prices. I'd be grateful if you could take a look at these when you get opportunity.

    Many thanks.

  11. Hi Mollie

With the increased interest in first appearances and other noteworthy comics registry points on a number of Silver & Bronze Age books have fallen behind current market values. In a few instances the 'gap' is quite significant and there is also a good case for reviewing registry points on a number of other books. I've compiled a list of books where there is a current disparity and I've used the 9.4 Universal Grade as a barometer of relative values for registry points and latest reported GPA and set these out in the table below. The only exception is Avengers #43 where I have used the values for 9.6 Universal Grade because there is increased interest in the book across all grades but no recent reported 9.4 sale.

Obviously GPA on these books will change over time but I believe recent increases in value are likely to be sustained into the future and therefore a review of registry points to reflect these market changes would be quite timely. When you get chance to look at this you can decide whether to make any points changes.

    Thanks for considering.

  12. Ignore my previous post, I was having a bout of amnesia when I wrote it!

Even though Don Heck did the art for the main Thor stories in JIM #s 98-100, Stan and Jack did the Tales of Asgard stories in those issues so I agree the continuous run is JIM #97 through to Thor #177 with #179 as a 'stand alone' final issue and then Stan and Jack also did the three Annuals; JIM Annual #1, Thor Annual #2 and Tales of Asgard #1.

  13. Stan and Jack didn't do JIM #s 98-100, they had Don Heck art so their continuous run began in JIM #101 - and includes the two Annuals (JIM Annual #1 and Thor Annual #2).

If we're talking about all Lee/ Kirby issues then Thor #179 should be included which was their last issue together after the one shot art by Buscema in #178 (while Kirby was drawing Silver Surfer #18).
