  1. I wouldn't be coming to this forum if I wasn't a long term boardie, and desperate for options.  In short, I no longer have space to store my books in my residence due to growing family needs.  Is anyone aware of any luxury storage places that can vault high end books anywhere in the US?  The only place I am familiar with is UOVO Art, and after touring their facility in San Francisco, I was not impressed.  They simply cater to an art audience and do not have an adequate facility for collectibles.  Outside of luxury car storage options, I am not finding any facilities that cater to high value collectibles and the like.  Any suggestions welcome and greatly appreciated.  Basically need a space that can accommodate the equivalent of 10 long boxes under the highest security.  If I could put a safe in my residence I would but I simply can't.  Thanks

  2. Curious to see where this copy ends up.  The consigner bought this off cc for $6300 on 6/8/23 and now the book is offered in the current Goldin Jan Elite auction which closes in five days.  It's interesting that the consigner chose to go with Goldin on the sale, as I think that platform is a bit less established for comics and presents a bit more risk than putting the book on HA or clink. I wouldn't have flipped the book on Goldin, but maybe it will be a good call.  I'm curious to see where this book ends up as it's a great but one that really speaks to a certain type of buyer.

Interesting to see how quick some members give CGC a pass over and over and over again, instead of letting the members know that this was going on months ago.  CGC didnt discover this horrific act on Monday and file the lawsuit on Tuesday bro. :eyeroll:

    nice to meet you, bro

Swagglehaus (Mickey Finnegan) on You Tube actually covered this suspicious sale recently.  He suggested that perhaps there may be some money laundering going on.  Automatic Comics (Ryan) on You Tube also noticed exorbitant prices being paid for "run filler" DC books on Heritage.  For example, 2 weeks ago, he pointed out three Teen Titans issues at 9.8 selling for between $12K- $21K each.   A few months ago, he pointed a Superman #35 CGC 7.5 selling for $5K and a Superman $45 CGC 6.0 selling for about $4k.  Something was definitely off with all these sales given that it takes "two to tango" to reach these prices so it can't be just one "dumb bidder".  It should be noted that Heritage is not obligated to report auction transactions to the IRS which tends to give some credence to Swagglehaus' suggestion that money laundering may be at work.

I like Swagglehouse and maybe he's on the boards, I don't know.  That video though was a real reach.  There are easier ways to launder money then to get involved in niche golden age books.  Maybe there are some nerdy crooks out there, but that video was a bit much.  If you want to launder the cash, you don't have to overpay for a book.  Just buy an expensive book at fair market value.  The whole premise is flawed.

    X-Men #98, 9.8 White Pages for $10,20.

Why do I always get the feeling that that Heritage has to have the largest percentage of ill-informed comic buyers?  If feels like every auction has some kind of just plain insane bidding.  It wasn't that long ago that a 6.5 ASM #1 GRR sold for regular ASM #1 price, but It looks like somebody wised up because the sale doesn't appear in their history.  People with more money than sense.  $10,200 is a 16.5X premium over the last 9.6 sale of $616.  It is also twice as much the previous high sale of $5K.  In what world does this sale make sense?

I would really appreciate it if these people would go back to buying NFTs.

As someone that regularly consigns to HA, money is money and I don't care who the buyer is

I think the upcoming auctions from the larger platforms like Heritage, ComicLink, ComicConnect, etc will give us an indication of what effect there has been, if any, on customer confidence.  The results will also likely inform CGC's plans for further disclosure and changes.

I think that is a correlation that will be hard to make.  In the HA Sig, the Hulk 9.2 is already at a record breaking price if it sold today at 360k (w/BP).  Prices overall will be all over the map on these numerous lots.  I would hope CGC is not making business decisions that impact customer security based on ebbs and flows of major auction house prices, and I don't think they are.

If comics are following the same trends as all other collectibles, is it considered a hobby bubble or an economic bubble?

And if it's an economic bubble, which it obviously was, why are people arguing the Promise books were a hobby bubble?

I don't get the folks that are obsessed with pointing out that the Promise books were over-graded, a bubble or responsible for world hunger.  It's a good pedigree, the books are great, and it helps everyone that collects when a new pedigree is announced.  Sure the prices were higher for those books a year or two ago, so were a lot of books across many genres and eras.  Every time there is a big HA sale, there are a least a couple gleeful posts pointing out how Promise books have dipped.  It's just morbid and depressing and I don't get it.

he makes many of the same points about the future of comics collecting that we used to do every night here 20 years ago:  current prices are crazy!, kids dont care about "things" like we used to, print is dead/dying, supply is ridiculously huge post "196x" and millions more will come to market of all the keys,   and -- of course -- "the big gains are over from here on out."

IMO only the last one is different from the rest which we have been hearing constantly for decades.  The growth curve of the mega key books reaching up into the multi millions in HG will slow down as an investment % point of view (maybe double, but no more 10x todays levels).   but, lets face it, when the economy comes around, and cash is flowing again, and inflation has raised all prices (maybe except comics), we could get right back on the crazy train to numbers that are unthinkable today.  So its easy to be BOTH pessimistic/realistic, and optimistic at the same time... Just place your bets!

Agree.  I personally think I've outgrown his channel but several years ago, I got a lot out of it.

  11. So I had to replace a few sleeves on my books and ordered this product and it wasn't what I was looking for.  Anyone know where to get those old school sleeves that used to be on slabbed books?  Those really thick plastic ones.   The product I ordered looks like it will suffer from the same issues the non-old school sleeves have, tearing, ripping etc.   I need that rugged thick plastic that will survive a nuclear winter.  Are those no longer available?

    Thanks

General investing/collecting advice from Shawn Surmick of Reserved Investments.  He advises and does this stuff for a living, and I love the no-hype, "here's what I think" approach to his channel.  And like I said, he works in collectibles for a living.  He has some interesting takes on comic books, hype-fueled pricing, the future of comic books and pricing.  I always found it funny when people start talking about investment returns on comic books vs something like the S&P 500 over a period of decades, and he gets into that, as well.  He talks about a guy that asked for his help in trying to deal with long boxes of silver age/bronze age keys in reference to people telling him "these comics aren't getting made anymore, so their scarcity is set".  He said his jaw dropped when he saw that collection full of probably 9.x keys.  Some of his takes are common sense, but others could make you think a little or see the other side of the coin.  It's an hour long but probably worth a watch.

It's a decent video and I watch his channel.  That said, long term I think fundamentally he does not believe in comics as a valid collectible vehicle and he's made that point on several occasions fairly clearly.  He's just too pessimistic for my liking as a comic collector.  I don't need hype but I also don't need sober talk after sober talk about why it's actually better to put your money into an Index Fund, which he repeatedly drops as a great investment vehicle.  If I was interested in stock and bonds, I wouldn't be on these boards or collecting.
