I'm really liking this Clink auction.... a lot of sharp and obscure books..... Items that I might be able to actually afford. GOD BLESS...

Yeah I agree.  I picked up the Atoman #2 for what I thought was a reasonable price as a for instance.  Also just picked up the Sup 53.  Think I'll be happy with both.

    You pick up anything cool?

  2. Some Western Penn, John Byrne, "Black Goliath becomes Giant-Man" goodness...

I originally missed out on the original sale of this copy. Targeted the book for some time, then won it in another auction when it went up for sale again.

The thrill of the hunt. :busy:

    "Mikey likes it!!"

  3. Interesting that for you too, #31 was a speed bump.

(I definitely know of the HH collection. Was there a solid DD run, or just piecemeal run or books?)

It has to be that cover. The black, the charcoal and than gray must all contribute to the toughness of finding HG copies.

Such a killer copy you have!!

    Just checked census:

    2 9.8s

    3 9.6s

    13 9.4s

I would surmise that of the 5 top tiered books, not many have seen or will see a new abode anytime soon

I agree Eric. I only got my #31 (9.6 white) thanks to your intro to MethuenMan. I am still in your debt for that one bud!!

  4. It sure is an attractive early cover. I'm sure it's pretty costly as well. Makes my head hurt when I think of what a high grade 16 costs.

This 17 went for 58% of the high for the grade on GPA and for less than a 9.4 copy sold for in 2011. As for high grade 16's, yeah they're pricey but a nice copy in 9.4 sold for around $1,200 a year ago which doesn't seem that crazy for such an awesome book...

  5. thanks, buddy. i'm slowly upgrading anything #10 and up that i have below 9.0 to said level, if affordable [these days, that means 35, 45 and 52 are good as-is]. b/w 6-9, i'm going to try to get to 8.0 and above. my 1-5 books are ok, except i'd like to upgrade the 4.

I so respect this approach to collecting! I'm on a slower track but my goal is to fill in the holes in the earlier portion of my run too (#'s 1-20). All in good time…

In the meantime, good luck with the upgrades!

  6. Well it took me a few years but I finally completed 1-100 in 9.6 or better!

It'll be short lived as I have recently sold 1-10 and will have to transfer those cert numbers soon but it still feels pretty darn good. I know both Doug and Jeff put together awesome Avengers runs but with 28 in 9.8 and none lower than 9.6, I think this is the mightiest Avenger run ever on the registry which is kinda cool. At 250,150 it's certainly the highest ever in point value, in no small part to the recent upgrade to the #1 - thanks Gemma!

Anyway, I realize I'm patting my own back but feels good to have gotten it done is all...

  7. Is it safe to assume that most "slabbed" Oakland's were pressed to achieve 9.6 and 9.8 status or is it more reasonable to assume unpressed. To those of you that submitted the raw books yourselves, did you hedge your bets by having them pressed?

I'm going through a large OO collection with unread multiple copies and even in review out of thousands of comics, a true 9.6/9.8 unpressed book is not a given due to minor non color breaking handling/storage/production issues. Many will easily achieve high grades with a press but the ratio is not 1:1 for high grade. More likely 1:10.

I bought my Oakland's slabbed but I don't think they were pressed first.

Barton: can you comment on the Thor's I got from you?

  8. 9.6 with a pending sale of 10k on ComicLink :ohnoez:

Good for the consigner. Looks like these sales will raise prices on any copies 9.0 and up. Never thought this book would ever achieve 1/10th of these prices.

Do you guys think this is a real sale?

Confirmed sale. Luke cage is on fire ! I regret having sold my 9.6 copy many moons ago. :(

That said, the copy in the November CLink auction just went for $3,800. (shrug)
