  1. Not that I'm suggesting that we're the only possible opinion on this, but I'm gathering from this thread that nobody here realizes we just established the range for the Copper Age from our perspective in the last edition of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, ending Bronze at 1984 and carrying Copper through to the introduction of Image Comics in 1992.

Now you certainly don't have to *agree* with us, but it's not as if the Copper Age is a completely new idea, and it wasn't when we talked about it either.

    Arnold

What criteria are you using as the cut off date 1984 for the Bronze age, could you explain?

BTW: I'm all for a Copper Age section!

  2. Jayman - I really love this first issue! I only have one other issue from the series besides this, and it is packed with informative articles that the first lacks. The art is very good (especially the Bissette!) and for the most part the stories are intelligent enough to sometimes have moments that rival what I consider the epitome of 80's horror -Twisted Tales. hail.gif

Oh yeah, I also love the PMRC - style "Warning" tag on the cover, haha! Nothing says mid- 80's like a warning label!!! thumbsup2.gif

Hhhmmm, think I may just go track down the rest of the series...... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

I just have a smattering of Gore Shrieks also, there was also a second series. I swear one of the most disturbing stories I ever read came out of one of these issues, about a woman captured, tied up in a sack by some hill people and used as shooting practice! Brutal!

Death Rattle, Twisted Tales, Alien Encounters and don't forget Tales Of Terror!

A lot had beautiful John Bolton covers but this one is by Joe Chiodo with interior art and stories by Bolton, Bissette and, of course, Bruce Jones!

  3. While not BA Horror but not modern either as it's from 1986, a cool B/W horror series nontheless. This title by FantaCo Enterprises Inc. is not listed in Overstreet. Should there be an Infinite Copper Horror thread?

Precode Keith, I would like to see your opinion on this series, maybe a future review in an issue of HCR? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

  4. Hey guys--it's been great. I need to take a break from the boards to get biz and other personal items addressed. I may be viewing the boards now and again but I'm going to suspend my activities until probably sometime next year. Wish me luck on my project(s). Feel free to contact me via sterlingcomics@carolina.rr.com and keep in touch.

For those wanting "the list" I'm almost complete--will e-mail when done.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOO! frustrated.gifpoke2.gif

Only kidding, He definitly has some nice books, you will like 'em mucho!

    Welcome fellow Charlton collector! yay.gif

  6. Nice! Two books to the run! Will you consider the run complete without the 46 upgrade? 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

    I sure will!

Yes, I fall into that completist catagory, can't really define it, but there's that certain thrill of adding those last precious issues to a long time collected run!

And Pov it wasn't till I joined these boards, read up on the strict grading, then realized that that I'd better go back and reassess my books that I started upgrading certain issues. Case in point; I had a run of The Witching Hour completed many years ago, when I went back to regrade I found about 15 issues that had water damage and a totally rusted bottom staple! frustrated.gif

My goal now is to have everything VF+ and up, I can't always afford the cream of the crop, but if I see it at a good price well, Hehe maybe... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

  7. Another excerpt from the same article on CHARLTON:

" In the last few months we have sold a lot of Charlton comics, with about 2/3 of them being Horror & SF titles. They are selling in all grades, but in the last while the demand for VF or better copies has almost tripled. While the 1950's & 1960's titled sported notable sales, the real demand has been for the issues from 1970-1986 Era. The 1984-1986 Era Charlton's all had small print runs, which is the main reason buyers go beyond the 1980 mark. So it is the Bronze issues that are gaining demand. Especially popular are those issues with; Ditko, Sutton, Newton, Zeck, Wayne Howard, etc; With all the DITKO listing on Charlton in Overstreet, one would think that they are all documented. When i started going thru contents to sell these books, i found as many as a dozen unlisted Ditko issues in a single title. Haunted #21 up (the Baron Weirwulf issues) are fast growing in demand. Haunted #37 is the FIENDISH FEMALES issue, a cool oddball item. CHARLTON BULLSEYE (the Color comics series) had Unpublished new material scheduled for #11 up, that ended up being published in Scary Tales #37 up, (a fact unknown to most collectors). Many Ghosts of Dr Graves #54 has a early JOHN BYRNE cover from 12/1975 & is one of his toughest early newsstand comics to locate. Many buyers like the classic Wood-Like art by Wayne Howard, with Midnight Tale being perhaps his most prominent & best title. "

Here's DR GRAVES #54 for reference:

    Haunted #37 Fiendish Females

Just by coincidence I was looking at this book on Mile High's site and said to myself..."Self, this has got to be the best "injury to eye" cover of the Bronze Age!"

  8. Oh, and Ghosts #104 is the first issue with Squire Shade

Wow, almost the shortest stint of a host I've ever seen...

    but then again...

Anyone remember the host of "Tales of Ghost Castle" from DC? Lasted 3 whole issues? Hey-you Charlton heads---educate this DC guy on the hosts/titles you would collect first. I'm almost ready to enter the market for those.

Winnie the Witch from Ghostly Haunts was the coolest and my fav! cloud9.gif

  9. And how much supply do you suppose is out there? I find there a lot more HG copies of Red Circle books than I do of either HOS, HOM or even Ghosts. Although 1 and 2 don't show up as often, which are the valuable ones. The others are fairly common in HG from the ones I have seen one Ebay and at shows. If you can find HG copies of 1 and 2, those will increase in value. The rest proabably not.

Probably quite a few, I trust your word for what you've seen at shows as I haven't been to one in some years now. Just going by what I've noticed on e-bay when they do show up (and I was including the Madhouse issues) it's about 70%-30% low grade to high.

  10. also the cheapest way to get a collection. The Red Circle horror books hardly sell for more than a few dollars.

Not for too much longer I fear as these books are generating interest among collectors. Especially the first two issues of "Chilling Adventures in Sorcery" as told by Sabrina. OPG has them at $50 and $25.

Even so, I doubt they garner much interest in general. Still much, much cheaper than putting together a run of HOS or HOM in the same grade.

Agreed, but to horror collectors who are newly exposed to these Red Circle titles finding they can obtain fairly HG copies for much less than the "House" books, I believe demand will increase hence prices will rise.

  12. Posting just because Shivs says that this one is "tougher"!

Bah...that's not tough...I recently got a NM (and it was) from MH for $3. tongue.gif

Actually I'm kind of fond of this cover! The only thing that I think would have made it better is if Kubert "blended" the borders between King/Clown/Monkey instead of using those straight lines. thumbsup2.gif
