This cover would have made a great Dizzy Dames cover with the girl saying: "Check-mate? I thought this was Checkers!"

Seems like the Alan Moore run on Swamp Thing, and the downstream effects it had on comic storytelling, are being undersold in this discussion. That run was hugely influential.

Views and opinions obviously change over the years but to call ST a "meh" character is inaccurate. He was popular right from his HoS 92 appearance (fans  wrote in praising the story) and went on to have multiple series, guest appearances, movies, tv show, cartoons and a toy line. Hardly a two bit character! While GL 76 had a change in direction and attitude, it did not solely create our Bronze Age by itself. A lot of factors added together along with GL 76 molded the change. Important book? YES, definitely. Bigger key as of today? Sorry, I think HoS 92 has the edge. Swampy still has potential in new stories and possibly film to grow and gain more attention. GL 76 can't influence the BA any more than it did originally. My

This is a classic picture of my good friend, Leonard Brown, and I have the original framed on my wall.   Not only is it a great picture, but the story behind the picture is even better.    After the two of us had enjoyed a mail-order business out of our parent's homes for several years, he wanted to open a store.  I was finishing college and wanted to go to grad school, so I wished him good luck.  He met Malcolm Willits and they started Collectors Bookstore in 1964.  Leonard wanted to get some national publicity for the store so he loaded up a trunk with a great selection of old comics, made arrangements with a local auction service for him to have the winning bid, and called the press and told them to be there for a great story.  The L. A. Times was there and the picture was picked up nationally, giving them more publicity than they dreamed was possible.   I was always amazed that no one questioned why the L. A. Times was present at an auction they never attended before or after Leonard's phone call, but that's life.

As Jimbo mentioned earlier, I had the good fortune to buy Showcase 4 off the rack back in 1956 at the tender age of 9.   Up to that point I'd bought a few Superman, batman. plasticman and lots of Westerns.    It was really the cover of the book that piqued my interest and help to foster My collecting experience.   Interestingly I think the next Showcase that I bought was 17 with Adam Strange and then most every one after that until early 1965 when My ardor waned. I have to admit that I have always considered #4 to be the beginning of the SA.
Having said that, the arrival of the FF was viewed with much scepticism at first as it read and felt like another Marvel monster comic.   This would begin to evaporate for Me beginning with #3 and then it was full steam ahead with number 4 as the "intro" of the Submariner (and later Cap) was so well handled.   I bought all of the Hulk's first 6 issues and am happy to say that the day both AF 15 and JIM 83 hit Sid's luncheonette, I was completely hooked.
So count Me among the the folks who think Showcase 4 began the SA and FF1 began the Marvel AGE...

Terrific Terror s all! The ToT 15 is classic and the Coles are super. Love the funky headdress on the silhouette on the Startling Terror, kinda gets unnoticed in the mix.
