The release schedule for the corresponding series can't change their content. The first appearance of Captain Marvel, (you cant really call a name change a first appearance, but that's another debate), is the Panel I posted.

I would have to come down on the AS#9 side then. In a canonical sense, yes Captain Marvel #1 was first, but the first comic book that collectors could purchase that featured her as Captain Marvel would be AS#9. I suppose it would come down to if you believed "First Appearance" means "first appearance in a comic book" or "first chronological appearance."
