  1. Bittersweet buy today -

Local shop closing up - one of the owners passed away earlier this year - other is retiring.

Shame - the store was too far from me to be a regular - but they had a killer wall book section so I was there from time to time.

Snagged their remaining "sets" lot for a song. They were trying to maximize sales over the weekend - so these were not discounted as much as the other stock. Some dreck - but even selling that at .50 a book is money in the bank.

Bought out some of their better back stock too. Total of 29 of the longer "short" boxes.

  2. I picked up a cheap HP-8250 off of E-Bay and had disastrous results last night. I have basic VueScan so I did not bother uploading the drivers which may have been part of the issue. I got a couple 8 1/2x11" scans to come thru no problem but the scanner freaked out when I tried to scan a slab via a 8 1/2 x 14" scan. One scan looked good and then half way thru the second scan the scanner jumped to the left and started making a grinding sound. Couldn't get it to stop until I unplugged it. Restarted the scanner but then my computer started lagging and acted strange.

I restarted the computer and got a couple good scans and then it did it again. I'm using Windows 8 on a newer laptop and its really the only computer I've got access to except my wife's Mac which I'm reluctant to use. Any advice?

Got one through Amazon - aside form the person not knowing how to ship- they left the top feeder in place and did not secure it properly. So - one of the plastic mounts busted when unpacking - but I really do not need the feeder anyway for slabs.

Works good with vuescan (windows 8). I had to tweak sizing to get the full slab to scan and brightness, but good reliable accurate scans from there. Some minor glare- but 100% better than my camera shots.

I did download the HP drivers. Do not know if that helps. Would try that first.

The grinding sound - makes me worry a bit. Might be something functionally off with the scanner that kicks in when everything warms up. Try only 1-2 scans - then wait an hour and try 1-2 again. Wait another hour - then try several (you want to see if you can get it to fail again). You may have to bably the scanner - which is not the greatest solution, but unless you can return it may be a workable one.

  3. I am still holding out for GRODD involvement - a true reveal of reverse flash is almost too early in the series. Working together I can see. Take some shots from an accomplice is a great way to throw others off of the trail.

Plus - when trap was first sprung - wells was surrounded by people. Sure he could have super speeded over people - but seems way too long of a distance to pull off the double.

  4. I was thinking of Impulse (Bart Allen)...his history is sure convoluted enough;) However, professor Zoom is also a relative so Wells might STILL be Zoom;)

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bart_Allen

Probably the comic geek in me thinking too much - but zoom is just TOO obvious - Wells definitely has something going on - they are teasing a lot on the "yellow" guy - just too simple for them to be the same - a conspiracy or some extra connection between the characters gives them more story lines to follow.

I am probably thinking too much - but I really like the show and my son is into it - so it all works for me.

  5. He's not Grodd. Grodd was in a cage before the explosion and Wells was walking around (prior to the explosion and then again in secret).

You can see the empty cage in either the 1st or 2nd episode, don't remember which one it was.

I was thinking perhaps he's a descendant of Barry, back from the future. That is why Barry "must" survive. Either that, or Barry saves the world or something in the future and Prof Zoom knows it (and Wells is Zoom).

-- but AFTER the explosion - no Grodd--- I am speculating that Grodd took his place somehow -

being from the future - just seems so obvious, same with being zoom -

What about Impulse? - would help explain the "barry must survive" thing - even to the extreme of killing to protect him. More warped - but a twist that could keep things interesting.

  6. Will this technique work on people? Just curious.

Most people don't realize that BO is a product of the animal products we eat eminating through the skin and as a race, I personally believe we eat way too much of it. It's so damn tasty though. I'm currently ripping into a chicken shawarma (cheers to Tupenny).

I never heard of shawarma until the Avengers movie. Yet to try it.

tried it at the pita inn - pretty good stuff.....

  7. As for him standing - I thought it REALLY strange that he stood up in front of Catlin and Cisco with no reaction. They could just be accomplices in a larger scheme - but that is one big secret to contain. Plus - Cisco seems to be too much of a fanboy to be "evil".

Darn, with so many comic-related shows and plot lines to keep up with, I don't remember this - did that really happen? Is so, that would seem significant. hm

He did stand up in the first episode we saw him in before he was 'crippled' and in the subsequent flashback to the night the accelerator exploded. (he was popping a champagne bottle to celebrate).

CISCO doesn't have an evil bone in his body and will eventually become VIBE. They keep hinting at it even with his dialogue pertaining to 'energy' and 'power', etc.

CAITLIN is good...for now. She's absolutely going to become the villain known as "Killer Frost", or rather the 3rd incarnation of that character.

Some accident that hasn't happened yet is probably going to account for both of their transformations. Before that happens we'll have to see the introduction of Firestorm, which is getting even more confusing by the day....since they're incorporating at least 2 versions if not 3 versions of Firestorm into the upcoming character. Even her dialogue pertaining to her relationship stated they were 'like fire and ice'.

Caitlin will probably be 'evil' simply because she needs heat from other sources to survive.....and people are clearly one of those sources....but she can use Firestorm's heat to abate her hunger for energy. It's going to be one of those vampire that doesn't really want to hurt folks but has to eat things.

I will have to go back to the DVR and check - but I seem to remember a very short scene where he stood in front of them after getting out of the wheelchair. I HAVE been wrong before........

He stood up in the secret room and he stood up when he killed the guy in the multiple man episode. Never was Caitlin and Cisco around.

I was probably thinking of the flashback - must have been a scene where he was sitting - then stood up (and I missed that it was a flashback) - it stuck in my head as really strange --- need to pay more attention to my TV watching, lol

  9. The Grodd theory is interesting and would be a *great* twist, but we've already seen evidence that Wells has knowledge of future events in Flash's life. This strongly suggests that he's got to have some form of time travel available to him. Other than Professor Zoom, how many time travelling villains are there to choose from?

    -- My thought process -

Grodd - always the schemer - is using Star labs to gather the "new" villains up - not to imprison them, but to make a new team (Legion of DOOM!!!)

From a recruitment standpoint - he is using Barry to do the dirty work. Why risk himself - when he can send his new "toy" out to take the risks. He could also be grooming him to turn bad at some later date.

They keep showing the Grodd cage - and the connection to Wells. In my head (not a place you want to visit) - I am thinking that Wells was killed during the event - and Grodd was amplified at the same time. Since they had extended contact - Grodd was able to mimic him easily.

Another option would be that Wells lived - and Grodd is still at star running everything remotely. Or reverse it - and Grodd is impersonating him, but keeping Wells alive in the basement to help with memories if needed.

As far as knowing the future elements- Grood working with zoom makes sense (or he read zooms mind). Would also explain how Zoom then knew the investigation was still open.

Why the chair? - well a gorilla is not small. People tend to give someone in a chair room to maneuver. Keeps them at a distance. Bigger entrances, vans with open areas, --- lots of "room" for that big frame. Chairs are heavy too - helping again to disguise the mass.

As for him standing - I thought it REALLY strange that he stood up in front of Catlin and Cisco with no reaction. They could just be accomplices in a larger scheme - but that is one big secret to contain. Plus - Cisco seems to be too much of a fanboy to be "evil".

Eddie - is the strange character to me. He is a detective. Detectives are not stupid and are trained to investigate (lol - in a perfect world) ---

In the last episode - he just saw too many off things (for me) - to NOT want to ask questions. It takes a LOT of power to knock a golder off of a mounted heavy bag - and someone who trains on one would know it. He is helping Barry get better - (like wells) - but why? Hey - you are my girlfriends best friend who is male - lets be buddies? The comments on "improving speed" - just seems too snarky to not be intentional.

of course- I wear a tinfoil hat to prevent MLB from reading my thoughts too......

  12. OK - so now every one of the books now has to go under the microscope ---

Not a full key - but a mini one found -

ASM 122 (death of goblin) - has the marks insert - and a second insert inside (mennon contest and federal credit union ad) - almost like a second cover (made from what looks like cover material).

    no blue star

book seems in decent condition except for the staples - fully attached - but with the 1/8 or less tearing crosswise around them. Probably getting this pressed and slabbed - if only to make sure the staples do not shift any more.

Any clue on this? - does the second ad make this any more rare?

I have a similar book with an Alka Seltzer insert in addition to the Mark Jeweler.

Surely I love them, also because they "protect" the book more.

How would you grade your #122? – personally I would not slab these…

IT is a difficult one - because without the main defect - could be an 8+ (might reach a 9 with a press) --- but the staples on the outer cover each have the 4 horizontal tears - maybe 1/4 in - that allow the cover to pull away from the book. This is one of the reasons I am thinking of a press and slab- as handling risks growing these.

If I had 4 small tears on their own (just on the cover) - would think the book might reach 7 to 7.5 -- but at staples - 6 tp 6.5....

This one - to me is really a slabber if only to preserve the grade. I have marvel unlimited for reading.

The 122 is definitely a keeper. Wish the original owner kept collecting for 7 more issues though.......

  14. Just received an auction win of a Marvel Preview lot (#s16-25) today, and noticed that all of them had the Mark Jewelers insert in them. I've heard of this insert, which had been included in comics distributed from military bases toward the end of the Vietnam War. My question is, would this insert increase the value of a comic by a bit, if any?

MJI (and National Diamond) were put in books distributed to overseas military bases (although it has been confirmed that some were distributed at US bases). They ran in every 32 page book (not giants or square bound) from most of the major players (Marvel, DC, Dell/Gold Key, Charlton) from '72 through the early '90s.

Unless you have one in a key issue you're not going to see any premium. However, I have seen where they actually make the sale on some more common and/or lower grade books that just don't seem to move.

So - any estimate on the premium? -

As luck would have it - the latest collection that I bought was from a military estate - have an IM 55 with the diamond insert - I saw images in the thread with the insert noted on the slab- but no real mention in GPA as far as I can tell.

    THANKS in advance

Congrats on the pick up. Yours is the only other copy of that that I have heard of. Any opinion on the grade ? Does it have the star stamp?

As far as "premium paid", some people won't pay any, others will. I would say a majority would pay a premium if the insert is in a big key like your IM 55, and the issue is in relative high grade (8.0+). I've seen other keys with the insert sell at a 15-20% premium under those circumstances. Maybe even a little more.

    -J.

No star stamp - with a press - 7 or better - the book is in good shape - some creasing that should press out - no matter what the grade, it is a cool book and the score of the collection - saw this thread earlier but did not realize until tonight that the 55 had the insert (sold an IM 54 to a boardie that had one so I checked)
