  1. I agree with you. The inquiry about pressing, in today's marketplace, is probably asked to secure books they can then improve and re-sell for more money. People are dumb. Whether a book has been pressed or not has no bearing on whether it will upgrade or not. A pressed book can have defects introduced into the book than an unpressed book doesn't have. And @Nico Esq those opposed to pressing used to be much more vocal. I'd say that there are less people opposed to pressing than there used to be. You should have seen it around here 10-12 years ago. People were almost ready to physically fight over the topic at one point.
  2. Wow, it must be my reading comprehension or I need to go back and re-read your posts more carefully as I got the distinct impression from your posts that standalone pressing was a commonplace practice back in the days before CGC was ever opened for buisness. Go back and reread the posts, then. You were talking in extremes while I was trying to point out the realities. You were making it sound like books weren't pressed at all before CGC, which they were but 'commonplace' is a relative thing. Sure, not EVERYONE was doing it but people were doing (or attempting to do it) to varying degrees. I was stating that 1) it wasn't a secret that was withheld by CGC as you maintained 2) that CGC didn't have an obligation to share their standards 20 years ago any more than they do today (and they still don't share them) 3) that Overstreet's standards change over time on many things, not just on pressing but on many things as the hobby evolves 2) that the reason more books are pressed today is because it is more financially feasible than it was 3 years ago, so it was a natural progression as books became more valuable to have more books pressed

  4. People want to return items when they don't make the grade but if they grade out higher they don't want to return them. Unfortunately, many people don't want to assume any risk and want everyone else to assume the risk for them. Welcome to the new boss. In the old world, people would do their due diligence and then decide for themselves whether or not they would purchase something. If you got burned by misinformation you chalked it up as a learning experience and avoided that seller. And over time, you sharpened your skills and got better at mitigating your own risk. These days some want to be spoon fed wins and have everyone else fight their battles by simply throwing darts and if a dart doesn't stick they get big corporate money to pick it up for them and hand it back to them so they can try again. eBay, PayPal and credit card loopholes, which are not simply designed for just customer protection (although they do offer that) are also designed for corporate protection, corporate profit and corporate stock prices and so you have buyers exploiting these loopholes unfairly. The fact is that even CGC doesn't guarantee the grade of a book if you crack it out of it's holder. Any why should they? Anything can happen to a book in it's travels. Even if a book is a raw 9.8, once the seller ships it to you it can be an 8.5 (or whatever grade) by the team it reaches CGC's hands as anything can happen to it as it is handled, shipped, handled, shipped and handled again. If someone wants a CGC grade they should buy a CGC graded book. That is the only way to get a guarantee. And in case anyone cares, when I sell raw books on here I have a grade guarantee whereby I offer a refund if the book does not come back within one grade increment in either direction. So if I grade a book an 8.5 I guarantee it will grade an 8.0- 9.0. I figure one grade increment is only fair as CGC themselves can be inconsistent at times. Strangely enough, I've sold books that grade out higher than I grade them and I've never been asked for a refund. Most of my books come back in the grade I assign, a few less. What can I say, nobody's perfect.
  5. It's impossible to analyze tiny defects on a small scan. Scanners can hide defects, introduce defects that aren't there or change how defects look. Especially when it's just a tiny pic.

  13. I've been looking at a lot of Silver Age books recently. The old CGC label books consistently look better than let's say "half" of newer-label books. I suspect that pressing has to do with it. I want a book that's 100% natural. I don't want it to be as flat as possible. It just doesn't look right to me. I feel like pressing will make a book with a 'meh' wrap look a lot worse when flattened. The type of label has nothing to do with it. CGC grading standards fluctuates over the years and there are both tight and loose books in all the grading labels. And no, pressing doesn't do that.
  14. My comment was more directed at the new collector who doesn't have the patience to complete a run and not at the old school collector who has 'been there and done that.'
  15. Shipping: Certified books, shipping is included FREE within North America, ROW we split it. Raw books, include $10 for shipping within North America. ROW I will split with interested parties. Who wins: Time stamp seals the deal as to who wins regardless of the form of communication (including PM, in the thread, text or phone conversation). A negotiation is not a deal until both sides have agreed on terms. If there is an unconditional posted (or communicated) it will trump all negotiations unless we have already both agreed to terms before the was posted. In that case, the will have been in vain. Except that it will give you street cred and look cool to passers by. No House Of Shame or Probationary members or any others of ill repute. Returns: I am considered a very good grader among my peers ( Here is a link to my kudos thread ) but since even CGC is inconsistent I will not guarantee a CGC grade. I will guarantee to be within one grade increment in either direction - so if I am calling the book a 9.4 it could go 9.2 or 9.6. If it falls outside of those parameters (and it does happen that they go in both directions), I will offer a refund. But I don't expect anyone to complain if I undergraded it. I will accept returns if item is otherwise not as described. Consider all books pressed. Payment: PayPal, bank wire, check or MO.
