They are heavily used by dealers in the northwest and some other west coast dealers.
And it's nothing nefarious. They just are cheap and quick and those dealers continue to sell books.

Well, I stepped out of the show yesterday for a break and who did I see pull up in their car but Michael Goldman.
He was pretty tired (as usually happens when you have some heart trouble) but in decent spirits.
I gave him a lift to the back door to the show in my car (so he didn't have to walk it, if you're not familiar you get pretty tired after a couple of steps when dealing with hear trouble) and he got onto to working at the show.
I came home this evening so i have no idea whether he was there or not today.

    I spoke to Mike's mom.
She didn't say it was a heart attack but that he did have chest pain. He went to the hospital for testing yesterday and might be at the show tomorrow. How likely that is, I don't know.
His show has been one of my favorite shows of the year and he always treated me respectfully even when I was an up-and-coming nothing.
    Wish the best for Mike.

Just heard from a dealer who uses them a lot.
He said that they have expanded and moved into a new location. They've also hired more employees.
Apparently they are doing quite well from what he told me.

I'll share the details one day.
It involved a private investigator who used to be a decorated FBI agent, stakeouts, meetings in coffee shops off the expressway to share file information just like you'd see in a movie, tagging and following a suspect who turned out to be a scam artist who we think ended up being in a witness protection program and who was looking for a sucker to raise some quick cash and disappear again.
It was a hell of a ride over New Years a few years ago.

Susan and Mark are well known around these parts. They've been in it for decades.
There are also several board members who have done extensive training and even started their own businesses, restoring books professionally.
I think someone will be able to duplicate it at some point. It's not impossible and as comics get more expensive it becomes more and more easy to justify the cost of forgery.

I just don't know how someone can say this book is a 9.2
It's pretty nice, and magnified all of the defects are going to to look much bigger.
    I can see it as a tight 9.4 or a loose 9.6
    I certainly don't think they're off by 2 points.

I have received a lot of inquiries about this book (probably more than any other book I've posted for sale here in quite a while) so I know my price is in the correct ball park.  Just do a search and you will see that this is competitively priced compared to everything else out there available as I think I have this book priced right at retail / FMV. I don't think you'll find a nicer 5.0 at this price.
For anyone who is interested, I am located just outside of Toronto, Canada but shipping is free and I will ship anywhere in the world. If you're in North America I will ship Overnight - all on me.

In my opinion, there is currently an over reaction to Marvel chipping based largely on the discussions in this thread.
There is fear and people are afraid of buying a chipped copy because of it (or at least paying equal money to a chipped copy).
This exaggeration happens when people only think about long term investment. It's unfortunate.
I think eventually it will settle down as it doesn't make sense for a chipped 6.0 to sell for less than an unchipped 5.0 or 5.5, does it?

I think 40% is high but I do think 25-30% is realistic.
It didn't used to be that a chipped copy sold for much less (and like 'movie buzz being a thing, I didn't believe it at first) but ever since the chatter started on this chat forum it seems to have affected the market going forward.
It's almost uniform across the board that chipped copies that I have been watching have been selling for 25-30% less. Obviously the percentage also varies depending on the amount of chipping and the eye appeal of the rest of the book.
For example, one tiny chip may not affect the value of the book at all but an entire right edge being chipped will.
