The WEIRD TALES Thread: Collecting The Unique Magazine
Surfing Alien replied to RedFury's topic in Pulp Magazines
Nice. I'm really glad I grabbed a few back in the days of sanity. Moving to another artist, "The Dark Man" cover may be my favorite I have of Senf's covers. A gem of a tale is what led me to the cover 👍- 414 replies

Ha - I know you love that purported Cardwell Higgins - although I could see it possibly being a concept sketch for a girlie by someone like him. The "study" for Reefer Girl sold for $20k back in a time when the market was hotter for Illustration art. It will be interesting to see what the true published cover goes for on the 23rd. I can imagine it would go for quite a bit more, being so iconic but it's hard to tell in today's market what anything will go for. I could see myself throwing a thrill bid on one or two of the cheaper items that looks cool but I haven't seen anything that was really cool go for cheap on HA

I know we should always feel blessed with what we have, and I do, but I wish I had the swag to play in this pool The number and variety of fantastic pb OA pieces in Heritage's April 23 Signature Illustration Art auction is mind blowing. Aside from the incredible original Rudy Nappi cover for "Reefer Girl" that I posted earlier, there's a great McCauley, https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pin-up-and-glamour-art/harold-w-mccauley-american-1913-1977-toffee-takes-a-trip-imaginative-tales-magazine-cover-november-1954-oil-on-canvas-30-x/a/8161-71108.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 Belarski's "River Boat Girl" https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/rudolph-belarski-american-1900-1983-river-boat-girl-paperback-cover-1952-oil-on-board-25-x-19-inches-635-x-483-cm-signed/a/8161-71115.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 A great Fixler piece https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/fred-fixler-american-1923-2010-the-hard-sell-girls-paperback-cover-1964-gouache-on-board-16-1-2-x-11-1-2-inches-419-x-292/a/8161-71123.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 Some great Rader's, I've rarely seen his originals go for sale https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/paul-rader-american-1906-1986-the-platinum-trap-paperback-cover-1962-tempera-on-board-12-7-8-x-6-7-8-inches-327-x-175-cm-/a/8161-71125.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/paul-rader-american-1906-1986-the-drifter-paperback-cover-1962-gouache-and-watercolor-on-board-18-1-2-x-12-1-2-inches-470/a/8161-71124.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 Some nice lesbian pieces that you rarely see https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/al-brule-american-20th-century-the-one-between-paperback-cover-1962-gouache-on-board-18-3-4-x-12-1-8-inches-476-x-308-cm-/a/8161-71122.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 A gorgeous McGinnis blonde https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/robert-mcginnis-american-b-1926-mermaid-on-the-rocks-paperback-cover-1967-gouache-on-board-9-5-8-x-14-3-8-inches-244-x-36/a/8161-71126.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 A whole bunch of nice girlies https://fineart.ha.com/itm/paintings/hugh-joseph-ward-american-1909-1945-irresistible-bedtime-stories-magazine-cover-april-1936-oil-on-canvas-29-x-20-inches-73/a/8161-71139.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 Lot's of killer pulp covers https://fineart.ha.com/itm/pulp-pulp-like-digests-and-paperback-art/hugh-joseph-ward-american-1909-1945-mr-oo-private-detective-stories-magazine-cover-may-1941-oil-on-canvas-30-x-21-inches-/a/8161-71090.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Open-ThisAuction-120115 Lot's of Dribens, some 5 figure Elvgrens, so much more. A great auction if you love this stuff Man it's fun to look at but kinda sad for us bottom feeders as well. I really hope to snag at least one nice piece of OA this year that flies under the radar somewhere. Heritage isn't likely the place

It would be a Crime not to post your Detective Pulps

Startling Detective Adventures, September 1939. Stockton Mulford bondage cover. Brilliant colors on this one. "If this was a comic book" -
Nice books fellas I'm going to a ballgame tomorrow so I'm gonna do a Thursday Fun instead of the usual Friday. Bought a nice collection of Science Fiction that is chock full of high grade books. I have to compare most with my current copies but It will generate a ton of dupes, probably enough to do another sale sooner rather than later. A couple of tubs full... Some nice spines. Most look like they were read once carefully and put away. When the spine edges have all their color you know you're looking good... Very high grade copies of a whole bunch of the "fridge magnets". Here's a couple The prize is this unread copy of Jack Vance's 1st book, "The Dying Earth", Hillman No. 41. Cover art by Leo Morey. At the top of every old school collectors list. It's so tough in high grade due to scarcity and terrible construction. This is bright and glossy with almost no wear. NFS

April 15th, 1940 Blatantly blatant. A pure copy. I don't think there is any counter-argument to Tilburne as the artist on these AFR's. It is just how he operated.

I've been collecting for a loooooong time but I don't think I've seen any jd piece atop this OA. A demo piece sold for records in the past, but this is the actual used cover... Masterpiece of stoner girl mood by Rudy Nappi Anyone want to lend me 20k https://fineart.ha.com/itm/paintings/rudy-nappi-american-1923-2015-reefer-girl-paperback-cover-1953oil-on-board23-x-15-5-8-inche/a/8161-71114.s

Have Paperbacks become the “next big thing”?

That might be his best draftsmanship I've ever seen. He was not that good technically as an artist so did a lot of swiping and his paintings are cartoonish, rather than shaded down to pro finish. I still love his covers though, they catch a mood I think is classic

Thanks, I guess those are well known in the Golden Age collecting community although I wasn't aware of the Eerie comic until NerV and Goldust40 alerted me in a sale thread I was aware of the swipe elements of the cover though. The dragon is from a Belarski pulp cover.

You been raised right Pat It's even more obvious if you know the backstory: Weird Tales artist who paints in a "globular" style uses a swipe of an old Weird Tales cover to paint a known "globular" style cover in the same year as fanciful "globular" style covers appear on Avon Fantasy Readers in a style that looks like no other artist in the world than... that Weird Tales artist Including an obvious swipe of a Graves Gladney Shadow cover on AFR No. 6 Nah.. couldn't be the most obvious artist in the Avon/Weird Tales orbit at the time

100% not Bok. If I ever have time, maybe i'll collect all of my posts about why I think A.R. Tilburne is the artist on AFR No.2,3,4 and probably 5 & 6 as well and try to put an article together. I think my many points are persuasive.
