Really amazing pulps Dwight (and BZ)! Care to share how you came across these file copies?

Enquiring minds want to know. :shy:

I too would also love to hear the story on how you acquired those nice pulps. Please share it with us, if you would like.

In the meantime...this isn't mine, but it's one of the COOLEST covers I've seen...

    SPICY MYSTERY STORIES AUGUST 1935

    SpicyMystery8-35GREENSKULL.jpg

How could you have resisted picking this up ?

The GREEN SKULL with BLOOD DRIPPING from it's BONY FINGERS...YOWZA !!!

I would love to see a full color image of a newsstand from the 1930's. More than likely, one doesn't exist.

  2. In my never ending quest to find more vintage newsstand pics...I found this one....too bad no comics...oh well, still cool I think...

    1947b.jpg

BUT WAIT....upon further searching I turned up the same newsstand with COMICS visible.

    1947.jpg

HOLD ON FOR A SECOND.....apparently these pictures were taken as some sort of promotional devise or something. I say that because we have the very same magazines from the first two pictures...this time coupled with close to 40 comic books. Check it out and enjoy.

    1947c.jpg

  3. I suspect the lighting reflecting off the newsprint has something to do with the whiteness of the inside pages.

Anyway, it's obviously a newsstand and the images are obviously real.

    Moving right along.....

Here is a picture of the inside of a store with a FULL SPINNER rack of comics, taken in 1959...unfortunately I'm not able to recognize any of them...still, it's kind of cool.

  4.

...... I have to say that the line of comics hanging above Bailey's head are certainly very suspect. The degree of clarity and dynamic range do not match the rest of the image.

    JEEZ.....half emtpy right ?

    glass-half-full.jpg

It's real. Go ahead and accept the fact the Bailey picture is possibly one of the greatest newsstand images of Golden Age that any of us have ever seen.

  5. Bye the way, as to the authenticity of the second DAD BAILEYS pic, I'm sure it's real....it's just HARD TO BELIEVE how cool the photo is.

    I found it here....

    FIRST PIC

I believe his son posted it, he's a photographer, Bodie Bailey.

    SECOND PIC THAT MR.SHOMBURG POSTED

Finally, here is the other pic I was going to post....it's not as cool as the first two...but it still makes you want to jump into the WAYBACK MACHINE and dig around....enjoy....

    newsstand3.jpg

I could only locate 3 comics...

    ZIP 26 May 1942

    MORE FUN 78 April 1942

and FIGHT COMICS 18 April 1942

    Untitled-4-1.jpg

  6. Is the top rightmost book, the one you couldn't ID?

I don't think that's a comic. It appears to be an oversized (bedsheet sized?) magazine. I stared at it for about 20 minutes this morning and ruled it out....

    You be the judge....

    1939b.jpg

To me...it looks like maybe a damsel in distress cover...a girl running with her hands in the air....and probably a DETECTIVE-CRIME type magazine.....however , it's pretty hard to tell.

  7. Scrooge " you are good, I mean... real good" (in my best Will Farrell impersonation)

It took me about an hour to navigate through the GCD until I happened upon the KEEN KOMICS....

I just typed in COMICS in the search bar...and then sorted it by date, since I knew the other mags were SEPT-OCT-NOV 1939.....still, it took some time.

I spend FAR TOO MUCH TIME searching for newsstand pictures.

    1939.jpg

  8. I was hoping that those were comics also....but they appear to be more magazines. The MARVEL in question I think(?) says MAN...I dunno.

I would post a close-up of those mags, but it's pretty murky.

Good Call on the Detective 32....Can you imagine if it was 31 ? WOW....that would be just a tad NEATER.....

These were on the stands the same time as MARVEL COMICS 1 (as well as about a million other GREAT BOOKS).

Try to figure out what the book in the bottom left of the comics display is.

  9. I was going to post a picture I've found of a 1939 NEWSSTAND here, but since I have a few other AWESOME newsstand picture discoveries, I decided to start up a new thread.

I welcome anyone who cares to BEHOLD THE BEAUTY of comic books on display at the

DAWN OF THE GOLDEN AGE to follow THIS LINK to FANTASY LAND ....(that should be hard to resist)....

I was originally going to post this here as a contribution to the wide array of WONDERFUL pictures that BANGZOOM has shared with us.

I thought it would fit right in here....However, I don't want it to distract or derail anything.

Plus, in the spirit of the COMIC QUIZZES.....there is one cover in particular, out of six...that should puzzle some of you for at least a few minutes....

Anyway, that's about it, moving right along.................................

  10.

HERE is the type of GOLDEN AGE TIME MACHINE Picture we all dream about, and since BANGZOOM has awed us with so many of his cool pictures...I felt that HERE is where it would be BEST PLACED.

In my never ending QUEST to find old newsstand pictures to DROOL over , I've found another.

I just can't get enough of these type of pictures.

For your viewing pleasure I present a newsstand picture with SEPT-OCT-NOV 1939 comics in PLAIN SITE.....WOW !!!!!

    newsstandA1939.jpg

This is one of the oldest and clearest pics I've been able to discover.

SEE the comics ???? Top left...you can make out MORE FUN from a mile away.

    WOW !!!!!!

NOW....try to determine which issues are present.

    NEED A CLOSE-UP ??

I did too....upon magnifying the pic, some COOL DISCOVERIES come to light.....

    1939closeup.jpg

I was able to place SIX comics, with the one on the bottom left taking me forever to ID....

HERE are the three obvious ones......

    threefrom1939.jpg

GOOD LUCK identifying the other three comics.

The Grand Comic Book Database is truly one of our most useful tools.

THE FUN doesn't stop here as I have two more GOLDEN AGE newsstand pics to post later.

One of them is PRETTY COOL and one that is going to BLOW YOUR FRIGGIN' SOCKS OFF !!!!!!

  11. I hope you can find some lists of stuff you sold way back when.

It would make me feel better about passing on a stack of Ditko Spiderman original art when I was 15 (at the Atlanta Fantasy Fair....$100 per page)

If you want, you can read about my own personal nightmare...you can do that HERE

  12. Hi ZOOMER,

I wonder how many other private collectors, such as yourself, have maintained such an impressive collection over the years ?

Was this collecting passion of yours shared with friends, or was it pretty much a individual pursuit ?

I'm just curious, because, obviously, the breadth of your collection (what you've been kind enough to share with us) couldn't be put together today. Not the way you've put it together.

Basically, I'm just wondering if there are many more Mr.Bangzooms out there, that you know personally ?

It's been great having you share with us. Thanks again.
