  1. Congrats on your 1st con, hope you had fun and are happy with your purchases, that is all that matters, comics books are/were meant to be fun. (Speaking as a guy who grew up in the 60's). Are you just getting started in the hobby? The last con I went to was Wizard World Philly in 2009, it was expensive to get in and it was more about "pop culture" than comics, I was very disappointed. You can check online for small(er) shows in your area, smaller venue, more personal, dealers more willing to negotiate especially for multi book purchases (my experience anyway), you may also find your LCS's may be there, good opportunity to get to know them since they are local. Back about 20 years ago I used to go to the National Guard Amory in Bordentown N.J. (monthly show) and one time shows in the conference rooms in Hotels, such as the Holiday Inn in South Philly and Runnemede N.J., there is usually always a local show coming to your town other than the BIG cons. Your LCS would know if shows are coming. When I knew I was going to a show I used to make a list of the main books I was looking for with approx. grade and price I was willing to pay along with a secondary list of books I needed to fill runs. I used to use Overstreet to determine approx. value, (as did everybody, dealers/patrons all had their copy handy), these days I would use eBay sold auctions for books in the same grade to get a roundabout of value so you do not overpay and can negotiate if need be. Becoming somewhat proficient at grading will also come in handy so you know when a book is "overgraded/overpriced".
  2. Too much reflection for me to properly see the cover, also along the spine, is that a crease or a reflection or light?
  3. I have old eyes and could not see them, looking at the other pics I do not see any structural defects, I only see color loss/rub along the edges and cover and the fingerprints in your close up pic. I feel you are still in the VF/NM 9.0 range.
  4. Blunted corners, especially the top right of the rear cover, edge wear w/color loss, color breaking creases along the lower right edge/corner, slight staple tears and minor spine stress, spine roll or cover wrap not positioned properly, minor foxing/dust shadow on rear cover. IMO... 6.5 FINE+ (FN+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose.
  5. Why does the top right of the book look to be bent and curving upwards, camera angle, something with the book? Can we get a different pic? Slightly blunted left side corners, top right corner crease w/color break, 1-2 small spine tics...
  6. Looks like a nice book, probably in the NM- 9.2 - NM 9.4 range with some color rub on the front and rear covers, however, the pic is blurry so it is difficult for me to see any small, minor defects.
  7. Welcome To The Boards and the Hobby!!! Spine Stress - A small fold, usually less than 1/4 inch long perpendicular to the spine. Stress Lines: Tiny-to-large bends on or along the spine of a comic book, that may or may not break color, usually resulting from mishandling. Tick: A small color break usually located on the spine by the staples typically due from stress that is placed on the book when opening. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXfJzqCUNVY
  8. The only thing I see with this book is the top edge is not properly trimmed. After looking at other copies online it appears to be a bindery defect, some issues are trimmed properly but others look like yours, IMO, this does affect the aesthetic appeal of the book. I do not know how CGC would view this, going by the grading standards I feel the mis-trimmed top edge lowers the grade to a... 9.2 NEAR MINT- (NM-): Back to TopNearly perfect with only a minor additional defect or defects that keep it from Near Mint. A limited number of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is flat with no surface wear. Inks are bright with only the slightest dimming of reflectivity. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. A 1/16-1/8" bend is permitted with no color break. Small, inconspicuous, lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable as long as they are in an unobtrusive location. Slight foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Almost no stress lines. Paper is off-white to cream, supple and fresh. Slight interior tears are allowed. VF 8.0 - NM- 9.2 - A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects are allowed. NM 9.4 - NM+ 9.6 - Only Subtle bindery/printing defects are allowed.
  9. Edge wear w/ slight color loss, top edge has denting, blunted corners w/ color loss/creasing at top left corner, color rub in price box by Thor, 1-2 spine ticks. IMO, the top left corner/edge wear keeps this book from being a higher grade, again a very nice book with a one defect that lowers the grade, this one has me on the fence...VF- 7.5 - VF 8.0 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. FN/VF 7.0 - Corners may be blunted. VF/NM 9.0 - Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. NM- 9.2 - Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted. NM 9.4 - Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted.
  10. Small (1/8"?) color breaking crease at top right corner, a couple of small spine ticks (as seen by my old eyes), minor color rub. Without that corner crease the book (IMO) would have been in the NM- 9.2 - NM 9.4 range, however, a color breaking crease of any size is not permitted until you get to FN/VF 7.0 or VF- 7.5, the question then becomes, how much of a deduction in grade? Since I do not have my books graded I cannot even begin to tell you how CGC views this crease on an otherwise very nice issue, if it were my book being graded and cataloged by me it would be graded at a VF+ 8.5 - VF/NM 9.0 with a note explaining that this book would have graded higher except for the color breaking crease. (For future reference) FN/VF 7.0 - Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. VF 8.0 - An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. VF/NM 9.0 - An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. NM- 9.2 - A 1/16-1/8" bend is permitted with no color break. NM 9.4 - A 1/16" bend is permitted with no color break.
  11. We cannot assign a grade without full/clear pics of the front and back covers, inside front and rear covers, centerfold. Just from your two pics I can see numerous color breaking creases and color breaking spine ticks, it also appears that the top edge has been trimmed.
  12. I can give you a roundabout idea on FMV, my Son also had/has the complete run and he is selling them so I have a few issues here that I graded and priced using eBay sold auctions. Issue #1 and issues 70-80 (limited print run) are the only books that are more than $5.00-$15.00 (depending on grade/condition) He sold issues 1 (NM 9.4), 4 (FN+ 6.5), 8 (FN/VF 7.0) for $75.00 for all three. The other books I have here that are graded and priced are... TRANSFORMERS (1984) 2 (NM 9.4) $30.00 3 (VF 8.0) $15.00 71 (VF- 7.5) $20.00 72 (FN/VF 7.0) $20.00 73 (VF/NM 9.0) $20.00 74 (VF- 7.5) $20.00 75 (VF- 7.5) $20.00 76 (VF- 7.5) $20.00 77 (VF/NM 9.0) $25.00 78 (VF 8.0) $25.00 79 (VF/NM 9.0) $35.00 80 (CGC VF/NM 9.0) $90.00
  13. A Mylite and Acid Free Board provide the same amount of protection as being in a CGC slab, both need to be stored in the proper environment, constant temp/humidity (50%), away from sources of heat/moisture and away from all UV light.
  14. And on top of all that... Get Off My Lawn...Punk!!!
  15. I cannot answer your question on a C&P since I do not partake in this service. Moderate edge and corner wear with color breaking creases, moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks/creases, moderate staple tears, rusted staples, staining and color loss on front cover. Rear Cover: moderate creasing along edges/corners with corner tears, small tears on outer edge, moderate foxing/staining. What I cannot see which will have an impact on the grade is if the cover/centerfold are fully attached, loose, detached at one staple or completely detached, I also cannot see if there is any rust migration on the inside cover/pages. IMO, as the book sits right now, the rusty staples prevent this book from being a VG 4.0, final grade... 3.0 GOOD/VERY GOOD (GD/VG): Back to TopA used comic book showing some substantial wear. Cover shows significant wear, and may be loose or even detached at one staple. Cover reflectivity is very low. Can have a book-length crease and/or dimples. Corners may be blunted or even rounded. Discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor to moderate soiling is allowed. A triangle from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable. Tape and other amateur repair may be present. Moderate spine roll likely. May have a spine split of anywhere from 1" to 1-1/2". Staples may be rusted or replaced. Minor to moderate staple tears and moderate stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present.
  16. I do not see anything wrong with this book that would prevent it from being in the NM 9.4 range, however, I do see what appear to be creases (or reflective light), if they are creases the grade would drop, by how much? (VF/NM 9.0, VF+ 8.5?)
  17. I cannot answer your question about a clean and press since I do not partake in this service. Dented/creased top right corner (extends to pages and rear cover), slightly blunted corners, minor spine stress with a couple of spine ticks, slight staple tears, minor foxing along spine, very slight spine roll, minor to moderate foxing on rear cover. IMO, and I may be wrong, is that even with the corner issue the overall condition of the book warrants this grade. 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to TopAn excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal.
  18. No, they tell you to check their "Want List" which shows which books they are looking for, the condition they are willing to accept and the price they are willing to pay for each book. I sent them a list of the 2000 books my Son was/is selling and that was their reply and these were not all dollar books, originally we had a dealer come look at the lot, we wanted $2000.00 for the entire lot, he offered $800.00, we declined. He also says that for dollar books he will only pay a maximum of 5 cents each, said he sells boxes of dollar books at shows to other dealers for $10.00 a box. I do not actually list his books for sale, I wait to see what folks are looking for on the "Sales Allowed" Facebook Groups and if I have it, I post it. In two years we have sold about 300 books for about $3000.00.
  19. I agree, with the creasing/tears this book is in the VG 4.0 - VG+ 4.5 range.
  20. Slight edge wear w/denting on top edge, blunted corners w/slight color loss, color breaking crease at bottom right corner and outer edge, minor to moderate spine stress with a few color breaking spine ticks, slight staple tears, slightly discolored staples, minor foxing/discoloration, slight spine roll. Rear Cover... dented top edge, top right corner crease, minor wrinkling, minor to moderate foxing/discoloration/dust shadow. IMO...FN 6.0 (FN+ 6.5?) 7.0 FINE/VERY FINE (FN/VF): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with outstanding eye appeal. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  21. Blunted corners w/color breaking creases, minor edge wear with color loss along top edge, moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks and creases, slight discoloration on front cover, discolored staples, small crease/tear on out edge of rear cover, moderate discoloration/dust shadow on rear cover. I have no idea what that is at the bottom right of the rear cover. IMO...This book appears better than a VG/FN 5.0 but does it make FN 6.0 with the creasing?, so... FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose. 5.5 FINE- (FN-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  22. That will depend on the Overall Condition of the book. I would suggest that you open a thread in the "https://boards.cgccomics.com/forum/42-hey-buddy-can-you-spare-a-grade/" section with clear pics of the front and rear covers, spine and staples, inside front and rear covers and the centerfold. Dust Shadow - Darker, usually linear area at the edge of some comics stored in stacks. Some portion of the cover was not covered by the comic immediately above it and was exposed to settling dust particles. Also see "Oxidation Shadow" and "Sun Shadow." Foxing - Defect caused by mold growth which results in a spotting effect usually at the edges of comic books. Stains - Discoloration caused by a foreign substance. Just for "Foxing, Staining, Discoloration"... NM- 9.2 - NM 9.4 - Slight foxing. VF 8.0 - VF/NM 9.0 - Very minor foxing. FN/VF 7.0 - Minor foxing. FN 6.0 - minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. VG/FN 5.0 - minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. VG 4.0 - Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. GD/VG 3.0 - Discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor to moderate soiling is allowed. GD 2.0 - Moderate soiling, staining, discoloration and foxing may be present As you can see there are many grey areas in comic book grading, they use descriptive terms such as, "slight, very minor, minor, moderate", these terms do not have a black and white definition which leaves it up to individual interpretation which can change day to day.
  23. Edge/corner wear with color breaking creases, minor to moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks, minor staining in the price box, dented upper edge on rear cover, minor foxing on rear cover, staining by lower staple on rear cover, minor creasing on rear cover. IMO...
  24. Severe creasing top left corner, blunted corners w/small color breaking creases, two tears on the top edge, color breaking scratch on left lower edge, minor to moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks and color loss, slight spine roll, moderate to severe creasing on rear cover, slight foxing on rear cover. IMO...VG+ 4.5 (VG/FN 5.0?) 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. 4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.
  25. I understand that eBay sold auctions are much more accurate to determine FMV, unfortunately there are not any Captain America 1's up for auction or any sold auctions from the past, so we use what we have.
