  1. Moderate edge/corner wear with color breaks, multiple color breaking creases with one book length, moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks/creases, spine roll/fanned pages, creasing on rear cover, minor to moderate foxing on rear cover. What I cannot see are the staples, is the cover/centerfold loose/detached? There are not any pieces missing nor any spine splits, so... IMO...VG- 3.5 4.0 VERY GOOD (VG): Back to Top The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. 3.5 VERY GOOD- (VG-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 3.0 GOOD/VERY GOOD (GD/VG): Back to Top A used comic book showing some substantial wear. Cover shows significant wear, and may be loose or even detached at one staple. Cover reflectivity is very low. Can have a book-length crease and/or dimples. Corners may be blunted or even rounded. Discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor to moderate soiling is allowed. A triangle from 1/4" to 1/2" can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" to 1/4" square is also acceptable. Tape and other amateur repair may be present. Moderate spine roll likely. May have a spine split of anywhere from 1" to 1-1/2". Staples may be rusted or replaced. Minor to moderate staple tears and moderate stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present.
  2. Blunted/rounded corners, discolored staples, slight spine stress with a few minor spine ticks that slightly break color, some spots of slight color rub, yellowing of the spine on the front and back covers and upper edge. (oxidation from UV exposure?) IMO, as the book sits right now, even with the yellowing I feel the book is in the VF- 7.5/VF 8.0 range. 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. An unnoticeable 1/4" crease is acceptable if color is not broken. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. Spine is almost completely flat with a possible minor color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Very slight staple tears and a few almost insignificant stress lines may be present. Paper is cream to tan and supple. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. 7.5 VERY FINE- (VF-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.
  3. Edge/Corner wear w/denting, color rub and color breaking creases, moderate foxing/staining on both front and rear covers, discolored/slightly rusted staples, minor to moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine ticks. IMO...FN- 5.5 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. Blunted corners are more common, as is minor staining, soiling, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor spine roll is allowed. There can also be a 1/4" spine split or severe color break. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and a few slight stress lines may be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown and fairly supple with no signs of brittleness. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present. Centerfold may be loose. 5.5 FINE- (FN-): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Fine but with an additional defect or small accumulation of defects that detracts from the book's appearance by a perceptible amount. 5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN): Back to Top An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.
  4. Spine roll w/fanned pages, blunted corners w/very slight creasing, discolored staples w/minor staple tears, minor to moderate spine stress with a few spine ticks that break color, moderate foxing/staining on both front and rear covers. Due to the foxing/staining I cannot grade this book higher than a... 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. 5. Slight corner rounding, minor spine stress with a few color breaking spine ticks and a small tear across from Spidey's right leg under the price box, discolored staples and slight staple tears, slight spine roll, slight color rub, denting on the outer edge of rear cover, slight foxing on rear cover. IMO...VF- 7.5 8.0 VERY FINE (VF): Back to Top An excellent copy with outstanding eye appeal. A limited accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Cover is relatively flat with minimal surface wear beginning to show, possibly including some minute wear at corners. Inks are generally bright with moderate to high reflectivity. A small accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear beginning to show, possibly including minor creases. Corners may be blunted. Inks are generally bright with a moderate reduction in reflectivity. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. Minor foxing. The slightest spine roll may be present, as well as a possible moderate color break. Staples may show some discoloration. Slight staple tears and a small accumulation of light stress lines may be present. Slight rust migration. Paper is cream to tan. Centerfold is mostly secure. Minor interior tears at the margin may be present.
  6. Off center cover wrap, cover not trimmed properly, very minor spine stress/ticks no color break, slightly rounded corners. IMO the off center wrap is not aesthetically pleasing, especially the rear cover, still I give this book a... 9.0 VERY FINE/NEAR MINT (VF/NM): Back to Top Nearly perfect with outstanding eye appeal. A limited number of bindery/printing defects are allowed. Cover is almost flat with almost imperceptible wear. Inks are bright with slightly diminished reflectivity. An 1/8" bend is allowed if color is not broken. Corners are cut square and sharp with ever-so-slight blunting permitted but no creases. Several lightly penciled, stamped or inked arrival dates are acceptable. Very minor foxing. Spine is tight and flat. Staples may show some discoloration. Only the slightest staple tears are allowed. A very minor accumulation of stress lines may be present if they are nearly imperceptible. Paper is off-white to cream and supple. Very minor interior tears may be present. 8.5 VERY FINE+ (VF+): Back to Top Fits the criteria for Very Fine but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.
  7. Edge/corner wear w/small creasing/color breaks especially along the top edge, a few color breaking scratches, minor spine wear with a few small color breaking spine ticks, cover wrap not centered at bottom half, slight foxing on rear cover. 8. Edge wear w/color breaks/color rub, blunted/slightly creased corners, spine roll w/fanned pages, a few spots of color rub, minor to moderate spine stress w/color breaking spine tics, minor staple tears, staples off center and slightly discolored, moderate foxing/mold on rear cover. IMO it is the foxing/mold on the rear cover that prevents this book from being a higher grade. 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to TopAn above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects. Some accumulation of minor bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases. Inks show a significant reduction in reflectivity. 9. I hated to have to make decisions like this when it came to buying books. I have a couple of books that have holes punched in them, however, I do not have my books graded. I collect for nostalgia and to complete runs, I collected on a budget so anything that got me the book at a lower cost was fine by me, I bought all of my books including all of my keys in the 80's/90's/ early 2000's before the prices became ridiculous and before the MCU was a thing, I have only spent over $100.00 twice ($125.00 and $130.00) for a comic book so I cannot really relate to spending $5000.00. I have seen (online) higher grade books (VF 8.0) with binder holes come back from CGC with a GD 2.0 Blue Label. Having said that it all depends on what you are willing to live with, it is a lower grade book (GD 2.0 at best), if the binder holes/aesthetic appeal do not bother you... The question becomes will this book receive a GD 2.0 or will CGC knock down the grade to a GD- 1.8 or FR/GD 1.5, if they do knock the grade down...An X-Men 1 CGC FR/GD 1.5 recently sold at auction for $4600.00. (25 bids/15 bidders/3 retractions).
  10. Every 6 month's (June/December, I have records going back to 2015)) I check the FMV for my top 100 books using eBay sold auction prices for books in the same grade, when folks mentioned a downturn in values I am seeing that, some of the books have dropped in value by about 25% over the last 6 month's, while others that are non keys are remaining the same or close to the same. Examples: (June/December) ASM 2 PR. 0.5 $1000.00/$690.00, ASM 14 VG/FN 5.0 $1900.00/$1400.00, Avengers 4 GD/VG 3.0 $1200.00/$900.00, F.F. 2, 3, 4 in FR 1.0 all dropped about $200.00 each, that is as far as I have gotten to this point, my opinion is prices are just getting back to normal, even with the values decreasing the value of these books is still above and beyond the values in 2019/2020, the current values seem to be coming back to 2021 values.
  11. That is really an open ended question since everyone's opinion of what is acceptable and what is not is different. For me, collecting for 40 years on a tight budget and being a completist meant buying higher dollar books that were in the PR 0.5 - FR/GD 1.5 in order to afford the book, a lot of these books are not aesthetically pleasing, I am/was more interested in having the book/story and completing the run as opposed to actual cover attractiveness, you have to determine what you are willing to live with. Defects you should look for in any book would be, and again some of these things are acceptable to collectors, like me. Faded cover, brittle pages (not acceptable to me), coupons cut out/filled out, excessive foxing/staining, mold, bug/rodent chew, severely rusted staples/rust migration, spine splits/staple tears, detached cover/centerfold, pieces missing from the front/rear cover, severe spine roll/fanned pages, missing pin-up pages, etc. Since you are looking for books in the GD 2.0 - VG 4.0 range some of these defects will be there since they are allowed in those grades. If you are not sure what to look for I would suggest making a small purchase for the... https://gemstonepub.com/the-overstreet-guide-to-grading-comics-6th-edition/ The book has illustrations of all the defects and which are allowed in each grade, you can probably find pics online also. Here are the grading standards and a glossary of terms, the glossary site listed has a very good glossary. (Disregard the grading standards on the glossary site, they are outdated) https://comics.ha.com/tutorial/comics-grading.s?show=comicdefinitions http://www.teako170.com/grade.html
  12. Looking at your pics I am not certain that your issue is entirely "spine roll", it appears to be an "off center wrap". The pages are not really fanned to the degree the cover is off center and the centerfold shows the staples to be off center. If this were a spine roll the staples would still be centered at the centerfold but the pages would have fanned, IMO you have both an off center cover and a slight spine roll. Edge wear with color rubs, blunted corners with color rubs, 2" color breaking crease at lower right corner, cover/staples not centered, slightly fanned pages slightly discolored staples, small spots of color rub in the "black" by the spine, small dent/crease on the "M" and "E" in the price box, what appears to be a color breaking scratch through Spider-Mans right leg (runs from The Scorpions face to J.J.J.'s face) as seen in your second to last pic, slight foxing on rear cover. IMO, the book overall presents nicely, it is the color breaking crease at the lower right corner that keeps this book from grading higher. 13. I have taped many books from my collection in the PR 0.5 - FR/GD 1.5 to prevent them from falling apart even more when they are touched/handled, I have no problem with doing that and never have. HEY!!! I collect Sad Sack Titles and I have all of the 10 cent covers (1-124) from the original title "Sad Sack Comics", however, my Sad Sack 1 is coverless so I would be very happy getting a complete #1. I loved the complete storyline, bought most issues new, non-stop continuation from issues 1-75, Annuals 1-4 and one crossover (that affected the original storyline) Power Man and Iron Fist 73, almost everybody from the Marvel Universe appeared at one time or another and you did not need to but multiple titles to keep up, plus, I found the storyline to be very entertaining. My favorite cover...
  14. What appears to be a subscription crease with color break, blunted corners, edge wear w/color rub and small creases, minor to moderate spine wear with vertical creases and color breaks. off center lower staple, staples discolored, slight spine roll/fanned pages. The issue I see is the long color breaking crease in the center (subscription crease?), book length creases are only allowed in GD/VG 3.0 or lower, however, without the crease I feel the book would be in the FN- 5.5 to FN 6.0, with the crease, IMO...(I grade conservatively) VG+ 4.5 - VG/FN 5.0 6.0 FINE (FN): Back to Top An above-average copy that shows minor wear but is still relatively flat and clean with no significant creasing or other serious defects.
