I love Spidey, but if the FF are done right....the family dynamics are much more interesting.  15 years ago FF 1 and AF 15 were almost at par price wise.  I can see FF 1 eventually catching up again.

That's what I was thinking too. The history of FF, being the first marvel heroes, will always carry weight. AF15 took off like crazy once spidey joined the MCU, so it seems plausible that could also result in FF 1 catching back up in value.

FF1 will never be as popular as AF15/ASM period. The characters are Meh compared to Spider-Man.

This is how I personally feel, but I just don't know if that's a widespread feeling. Although a couple have added that sentiment here. To me the inclusion of Dr Doom and the Silver Surfer are a much bigger deal. So maybe the FF are riding those coat tails.

Blasphemy ! ... I  will agree with some of that though . I actually didn’t read the comics first so had more of a blank slate , the movie reeked of the 80’s but I was okay with that . It wasn’t until I got older I realized how much they drifter from original story ( and hairstyle ) . That being said - I’m a big Arnold fan so I can’t give an unbiased opinion . For what it’s worth , I think the sequel was very bad ...

Same here. I was born in 78 so I saw the Arnold movies before I knew anything of Conan at all. Conan the Destroyer was much more of a summer blockbuster type of movie than what Milius went for in Barbarian, but I still like it for what it is.

I'm also a huge Arnold fan so I have a fondness for most of his work up until the late 90s.

The movie did nothing. If they have a good Belit that will help 58, etc. The BWS issues were due for some upswing. They had been stuck for a long time

Yeah would be nice to see Belit. More than anything, comics aside, I really just want to watch a well made Conan series. The material is perfect for such a thing. I loved the Arnold movies growing up and still enjoy them to this day, but there's so much more unexplored material.

for some books, not others. would we care about star wars and tnmt comics without the movies/shows? so there's that. but wolverine's and punisher's first continue to be big books while their characters are gone for a while on the screen. plenty of books get hot because of what is happening in books. And newsstands and other variants? nothing to do with movies. spawn is exploding and i don't think it is because of some vague movie that will be in development another 5 years.

Good points. In another thread someone brought up an upcoming Netflix show for Conan that I was unaware of . As a long time Conan collector I'm really interested to see what if any effect this series has regarding the comics.

This is a great example of why Conan books are a screaming buy right now. The property is in development at Netflix as we speak and a lot of people either don't know it or have already forgotten about it.

Get em while you still can. Especially the keys.

Interesting.. I had no idea this was in development. Do you think it will really have an impact on the values for either the Conan the Barbarian or Savage Sword of comics? With the Netflix show having nothing to do with Marvel and the character existing outside of the marvel universe I'm not sure what to expect.

This is the book where the market accurately reflects its value....such a sweet book. I wonder where Magneto would stand had he appeared in another X-Men book instead of #1? Doom and Magneto have to be the 2 greatest villains in all of Marveldom

    Congrats!

I agree about Magneto. He gets a tiny bit lost in the shuffle. You don't typically hear X-men 1 referred to as the first appearance of Magneto.

I just decided to check GPA data for TOS #39 in CGC 6.0 to see if there's been a drop post-Endgame, and I don't see one so far...

This could be more an effect of the insanely hot comic market right now though...it will be interesting to see what happens when life starts to return to some semblance of normalcy.

Good data! As far as life returning to normalcy, I think that's a number of years away. With the Fantastic Four and the X-men still coming I think those are going to continue to increase to temporary unrealistic amounts.  Personally I think FF1 will reach and possibly sustain similar value to AF15, but only time will tell on that.

Yes, but possibly not in this way.  I believe it is a combination of an overall shift in collecting what is important and the impact of digital reproduction and collected works.

When I was a kid and decided I wanted every single Amazing Spider-man ever made I went with an approach I had from baseball card collecting.  Get the rookies.  I did not care about the storylines, did not care about the artist.  I did not care about any of that.  I knew I had to prioritize the rookies.  So I went after 1st Black Costume, 1st Black Cat, 1st Hobgoblin, 1st Green Goblin and so on and continued to buy it every month working my way backwards and picking up other books as I had extra cash.  I had an AF15 before I had an issue 1.   Go for the rookies.

The values of a lot of the books these days seem to increase for rookies as the first appearance of those characters are the things that are really popping.  Sure, a 9.8 or a 9.9 is reaching five figures of certain books because there are some bored people out there.  But, people are buying up 1st appearances waiting for a show, like a card collector looks for rookies of players that show signs of greatness.

Movies are performance.  If Judge hits over 40 HR for the next four years and gets an MVP. Gold Glove, Batting Title or anything else while the Yankees win another championship, does Judge's rookie card increase in value?  Of course it does. So, if the movie is a blockbuster, it gains more exposure for the character and the character's first appearance increases in value as well.  Because... well... rookie card.  If the movie or show is a dud, then the rookie card decreases in price.  FF 45 is an example of that.

I think that this has flipped comic collecting on its rear end.  While in the 80's we were told that Miller's Daredevil run was a must read, it's really Elektra's first appearance that is the standout.  Sandman is a great title, but really the only two books you 'need' to own is 1 and 8.  The rest you can read digitally or through a collected edition.

A lot of good info there. And your point about the Miller run made me think how looking at old ads in comic books you can see that the dealers often did put higher prices on books based on artists, which seems to be falling by the wayside.

To further your point about shows being duds resulting in drops in value, I also think the "what have you done for me lately" mentality will also cause slowdown in value increases in some cases. I'm sure someone with the data could confirm or deny this. But take Iron Man. He had an amazing run in the MCU, being featured in many movies. Now that's he's "dead" (will Marvel find a way to bring him back?) I think he'll take a back seat to the newer entries or returning characters of the MCU. So could be the upcoming years will be a prime time to land a TOS 39 for those who couldn't get one during the prime of the hype.

  10. Are we at the point (or have been at the point for a while) where comic values are primarily driven by movie/show speculation?

I've collected what I'm interested in and I've met MOST of my collecting goals so I'm not asking this from a point of someone who is trying to figure out what "hot books" to buy. I've already got huge runs starting from the first issue for ASM, Avengers, Iron Man, X-men, TOS (starting at 39), Hulk (Vol 1 and 2), etc. So I'm more curious if the values of my collection are going to be tied to the whims of movie speculators.

I realize the big keys will continue to increase over time for the most part at a normal rate, but for example with the main Avengers related characters seeming to be on the back burner in the MCU I'm wondering if we'll see a slowdown or regression in value for those as other new hot items catch peoples attention. Especially fringe collectors.

Again, not asking for advice on buying, but just curious about people's opinions on the future of collecting and if the speculators are in the driver's seat on jumps in value. Either way I'll do my own thing, but as a long time collector the subject does interest me. I'm interested in any GPA data or personal beliefs to prove one view or the other...

Damn. This post was from 2016. And we're still waiting...

Personally annoyed that Savage Tales #1 happens to be the first man thing. I've collected Savage Sword of Conan #1-#200 or so and all of the Savage Tales except for #1 so far and now I would have to pay crazy prices to get a Conan mag just because man thing is in it.  Conan really has no "heat" these days. No hope of a MCU movie or show(seems to be all that drives values anymore) , so fringe collectors aren't blowing it up. I think the man thing intro is really what drives the price up for that book and that's unfortunate for us Conan fans.

  12. To me the two obvious examples of characters who dramatically changed from their 1st appearance to how we all know and love them are Iron Man and the Hulk

Both started out gray and their look noticeably changed to become how the world recognizes them. I like that if you showed a general MCU fan a TOS 39 or Hulk 1 the reaction is like whoa he used to look like that?

Would like to see some other examples. I can think of a couple but curious to see what everyone else comes up with .

Do you have the DC Comics Presents 22?

Me, I'm a run collector but not necessarily a completist.  I collect long runs of titles I enjoy reading and owning, as far forward as I have interest (usually late 80s or so), and as far back as I can afford.

I imagine being a DC collector would be a much greater challenge since their series start much earlier and the grails are a tad bit harder to get. Well, two of them at least. Those Batman and Superman guys

Do you aim for any oddities? Price variants, inserts, that sort of thing... or just the normal runs of issues?

Nope. For one thing, I'm not a stickler on the US price. I've got some pence. I don't want to go on a tangent but to me having the pence is the same as the cents. The same print run book with a different price doesn't mean as much to me as apparently it does to some. To each their own.

If the cover art itself was different or especially the story somehow then I would collect multiple versions of the same issue. But I can't think of any examples of that for books pre 1990. Maybe someone else can point some out though.

  15. I collect large runs starting with the first issue and normally stop at the early 90s. My asm run goes from 1-400, X-men 1-300 something, Avengers 1-300 something. I was a teenager in the 90s and started reading comics off the newsstand around the start of the decade. So for me those issues never had much nostalgic value and I don't desire them.

For smaller side series like Defenders, Master of Kung Fu, Nova, Captain Marvel, etc etc.... I collect the entire run because they have a clear ending that is prior to the 1990s.

For other series like Tales of Suspense my goals are usually tied to the main character. For that one my goal is to complete #39-101.

  16. The overpriced books you see on ebay are there because... Everyone knows they're overpriced. If someone lists a desirable book at a good price it won't last long.  When I was building my collection I would refresh my saved searches many times an hour to pounce on any good deals. If you just look casually you're typically going to see the terribly priced books everyone in the know has rejected.

And I said "typically", of course there are exceptions to everything.

I knew a comic shop owner on Long Island that never sold FF 252.   Whenever he bought an ASM 238 that was missing the Tattooz he would supply a fresh set from a copy of FF 252 and perform some surgery.  So.... be careful out there.

I looked it up to see if this was commonplace and apparently people have snuck such surgeries past the CGC grading team.

    https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/2017/10/20/amazing-spider-man-238-the-tattooz-situation/

Good point. I also know of someone who did this.

Personally I wouldn't buy an ASM 238 without tattoos regardless of grade. The book being considered incomplete would bother me. I got one about 8 years ago at half price books and I didn't even know it was the first hobgoblin. I had just gotten back into collecting after stopping at age 14 and taking about 18 years off. Later I realized it did have the tattooz. Got lucky.
