I added Tom & Jerry and March of Comics to the list. The last one to close this trivia out is:

    33) Romantic Story - 1952 Fawcett # 15 and 1972 Charlton # 119 [with a definite hiatus; for more on these Fawcett to Charlton transition books, look over recent Alter Egos/ FCAs]

WOW - it took this group a combined time of only 8 to 10 hours to complete (and refine) this list. Congrats on all who pitched in.

    1972 March of Comics include:

  2. A combination of discussions in the All-Star run and ending of CBM threads led me to try this.

Many cited the Synchronic collection article as one of their favorite in the Gary Carter days (it's in # 67 from March 1999). I couldn't agree more as it launched me on my Quest: collecting books on shelves around Four Color 386: Uncle Scrooge, namely March 1952. I gave myself 10 years (I started in July 2001) to finish the collection. As Steve F. would contend, this is not much of a quest as most books are to be found in dealers' inventory. Yet, since I am on a budget, it is still taking time to amass and some (though few) books are not showing up with any regularity. Due to these restraints, I decided that mid- to low-graders will do for my purpose.

I plan on putting up a scan a day, in alphabetic order, of those I already have. This should illustrate the diversity of the market at that time period.

Here's a snapshot of the task: I counted a total of 420 books fitting my eligibility criteria.

I am in awe of some board members' collections and realize this might have limited interested for everyone. Yet, I have found this approach to collecting a wonderful way to discover some less visible aspects of this hobby. In the 229 issues I already have (and 12 more coming in the mail) I also have already identified 113 different artists. Please give me some feedback as to your interest in this.

Very cool! Why don't you post a list of the books you need - witness Ian, I'll bet lots of us here could help you out!

  3. And now, Dennis the Menace #8. Although Dennis #8 was included in the Bethlehems, the Bethlehem #8 had chipping along the right edge of the cover and some dust shadow to the cover. I sold it to a fellow collector after I had acquired the copy below from Richie Muchin, who miraculously uncovered this copy in his stock.

Oh yeah, that was a "miracle" all right. 27_laughing.gif Cool books, though.

  4. thumbsup2.gif Very COOL find !!!!!

I wouldn't call it a variant just a printing error but it could be more rare than the price variants 893scratchchin-thumb.gif I have never seen one and I will be looking now. I would sure like to see it could you post a picture when you get it. popcorn.gif

Marvel Spotlight 1 (the 1979 series) has a no number variant as well.

  5. Hi everybody,

I'm new to the boards, but I'm a longtime lurker. I just picked up a 30 cent X-men 98 and 100, and I wanted to know if anybody had a 30 cent X-men 99 or any of he 35 cent variants of X-men 105-107. PM or reply to let me know.

Ah, but, young grasshopper, you are close to not one but TWO 35 cent variant test markets. Memphis/Nashville was one, and Huntsville, Alabama was another. Go forth and hunt!

Board member cosmic-spider-man might be your best bet for the X-Men 105-107 dupes.

  6. #1 - The first rule of Price Variant Club is, you do not talk about Price Variant Club.

#2 - The second rule of Price Variant Club is, you DO NOT talk about Price Variant Club.

#3 - If someone says that's one of the last five I need and pleads, you let him have it.

#4 - Nobody ends auctions early.

#5 - No flaming other members of Price Variant Club because they got the Ringo Kid 28 and you didn't.

#6 - Do not alert members of Price Variant Club for hidden variants. Let them find their own damn variants.

#7 - 35 cent variant collectors are insane.

#8 - If you found a variant through Price Variant Club, you have to find another one.

    See rule #7. Yikes.

  7. ROFL. NVM guys I got my mom to do it *embarresed*

This is the funniest and saddest post I've ever read on this forum. It is so wrong and sad on so many levels I can't even begin to start. I may have to make this my perpetual sig line.

  8. Thanks Darth.

I was just looking for information about Whitman variants when I stumbled across this forum. Now I have learned about all the other cool stuff to look for.

    Price variants, pence variants etc.

Now I am going to go whole hog on my conan (and related) collection.

Newstand, direct, price, even foriegn issues.

It's like I'm starting all over again.

It's thanks to you guys that I am actively seeking back issues again for the first time in probably 10 years.

    Paging Mr. Read'em (or Stupidman...)

This is why some people collect variants.
