  1. HMV has had them. A friend of mine bought a Deluxe copy there.
  2. Keep an eye on the Deluxe edition of Secret Path by Gord Downie and Jeff Lemire. It's been difficult to find and has been selling for over MSRP since it came out last month. I have been looking and still can't find one in stores. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=secret%20path%20deluxe&LH_Complete=1&LH_Sold=1&rt=nc&_trksid=p2045573.m1684 At least the film has been made available for free by CBC on youtube:
  3. Sheriff of Babylon is fantastic. It's a travesty that only it only sold just under 5200 copies last month. Issue 12 is the last issue, but Tom King's work on this series is something that I think will last the test of time. Vision was amazing. The other book that I feel is worth mentioning is Revival. Tim Seeley's writing, Mike Norton's art and Jenny Frison's covers make for a fantastic experience. At over 40 issues, I am surprised that it came in at # 291 on Comichron with only 5130 issues sold. I met Tim and Jenny a couple of weeks ago and they gave me a copy of the 1st deluxe hardcover of the series. I read it on Sunday and have to say that I'm hooked.
  4. Interesting. If there were more Wow # 1s published than most of the later issues it would help to explain why some of the other issues were coming close to the price realized by the Wow # 1. Thanks for the insight.
  5. Thanks, Stephen. I'm looking forward to giving this a read tomorrow. My wife's taking me to Doctor Strange tonight, so it looks like another fun weekend of comic book magic!
  6. Managed to pick up a few goods at a local auction earlier today. A handful of FECA books and one white: Super Comics Vol. 2 # 4. Overall it's in decent shape, a few pages are partially missing. The auctioneers had no clue about comics and were using an issue of Tip Top (with a Charlie Brown cover) and issues of Classics Illustrated to promote the auction. I paid less for all of the books I purchased than what I had budgeted for just the Super Comics.
  7. I was expecting this to be the auction where the prices started to fall, considering the number of poor grades. The prices that the Triumphs achieved are mind-blowing and the prices that the Wow 17 and 18 achieved make the Wow # 1 from the last auction (as well as the one available on eBay right now) look like steals.
  8. Wait, that's not even the same issue, is it? Looks like the only "mind trick" is me jumping to conclusions...
  9. I remember reading about this when it happened. Congratulations! That is one crisp looking book, Stephen. What kind of "jedi mind trick" was involved in procuring it? I was under the impression that the library planned to keep it.
  10. I also scored this mid-grade copy of Freelance # 31 last week. My wife think's I'm obsessed with Freelance. She's not wrong.
  11. Added this copy of Three Aces Vol. 4, # 2 to my collection today. Other than some creases and a bit of staining it's in pretty nice shape. I love Anglo-American stuff and am glad that I can still afford it.
  12. After three years of searching, I have finally finished my first complete run of a FECA series. It took the help of a fellow boardie and an eBay over-payment, but I am now the proud owner of possibly the only complete run of the Superior printings of Complete Mystery. Certainly FECA books do not garner as much attention as Whites, but I had no idea how hard it would be to complete the set when I first started. Issue # 2 is missing the centre wrap, but the other issues are complete. Here is a group shot. Hopefully, I will have time to get some scans up during Thanksgiving weekend.
  13. Thanks for the heads up. I don't see Dime 34 on the CLINK list this morning. Perhaps they have removed it to edit it? I hope so. I like that Bell Features revived some titles during the FECA period, but you are correct that these are straight up American reprints and are certainly not Whites.
  14. I wish I had started collecting them a long time ago too! I feel like I have been priced out of the market. Interestingly enough, Ivan posted a new article on Comic Book Daily today. One of the things he touches on is how the hard work of himself and others in the WECA community has led simultaneously to a renewed sincere interest in the works from the era, but also an increase in speculators http://www.comicbookdaily.com/collecting-community/whites-tsunami-weca-splashes/summer-comiclink-auctions-weca-comics/
  15. I agree with this point in particular and agree with Dan and Stephen that time will tell. I certainly won't get caught up in the hype, but I remain curious as to whether or not some of the high priced stuff on eBay will start moving. I don't profess to be a fortune teller (maybe a navel-gazer!), but I will be tracking eBay sales and unsold items closely over the next while.
  16. I wonder if we are going to start seeing a bunch of the high priced Whites on eBay start to sell now that the CLINK auction has changed the standard for pricing.
  17. I know a few people who would kill for a # 1 Barbie and the copper tubes in the feet leave no doubt. Incredible find!
  18. This is a really fair point, Dan. Considering that I paid $20 CDN shipped (on eBay!) for an incomplete copy of Joke # 9 earlier this month, I feel like the "joke" is on whoever paid $2200 for that Joke # 3. It's a real head-scratcher (or do I mean knee-slapper?)
  19. Crazy prices for the most part. The Colossal Comics 2 was the one I expected to go for the most, but the final price it realized was far above my expectations. With the exception of the Dizzy Don books, the Bell Features price points are incredible.
  20. Here's a cover that doesn't get as much love as Punch 12. Rocketman is a Canadian WECA book (by Rucker) with Funny Animal interiors that uses the cover of Punch 9. As few as 5 exist.
  21. There's a really good book about this by sociologist Mitch Duneier called "Sidewalk" that explains the history of street vendors selling books and magazines in NYC. It seems that a person selling poems on the sidewalk in the 1980s brought a challenge to the courts after being detained by police and his challenge was upheld due to 1st Amendment rights. As soon as I read your post about buying them off the street, my thoughts were that you lived in NYC. Duneier spent time living with the (mostly) homeless magazine vendors who he profiles in the book and claims that for some vendors the majority of the things sold are scavenged out of the trash. Really interesting stuff.
  22. I haven't seen another one either and I am certainly happy to have it.
  23. Here's one published by the Montreal Monitor c. 1946-1947. I wish it was in better shape.
  24. Thanks for posting this, Dan. Your point about the negative trend of the CDN dollar is good to think with when looking at the prices from two years ago.
