I dont play in the deep end, but made a few sales and was able to pick up one of my glaring holes in my GA Sci-Fi collection.
Held high bid from start of the auction and went wire to wire. I passed on the CGC 2.0 that sold on eBay last week ($830, cover detached, subscription crease pieces missing) and crossed my fingers that this one would stay around $1600, but was prepared to defend the castle. Old slab to boot.. maybe I'll get it reholdered and see if that cover can be straightened out!
nice. keep that crooked old slab

Spoiler
Cap 1 7.0 $243k
...the Blue Beetle 54 8.0 went for $12.9k, not me

Two collectors went beast mode squad on the Blue Beetle 54. That's a serious book with a serious number attached at the end. Good snag though to whomever grabbed it, money's just a thing.

Clearly the “S” is for Stan, it’s Stan Lee’s stash of Centaurs as a teenage kid. Who knew? He had an affinity for the Amazing Mystery books, no surprise, must have inspired Amazing Spider-Man and Marvel Mystery. The secret is out...

In trying to understand the milestones, I know Bat 1 introduced some of his greatest villains, Catwoman and the Joker. Does anyone know if this book was on the stands at the same time Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor was introduced in Action 23? If not, which came first?
Were there any major mainstream villains introduced before these 3?
thanks in advance
Batman #1 was released March 31st, 1940. Action Comics #23 was released mid-April, 1940, 2 weeks later. As for whether there were any mainstream villains before those 3, I don't believe so, not that stuck anyway. The two I can think of are Hitler, who I believe showed up on some covers in 1939, and Darth Vader who showed up a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I'm guessing pre-1940 :). Centaur, Chesler, Fox...nada.

Part of an OO collection I purchased 2 years ago of approx. 400 PCH, Sci-Fi, Jungle and Crime. Comics were mailed to me raw, no bags or boards just wrapped in old plastic bags, This comic survived nearly 70 years unprotected in this man's home. Then it gets handled by someone else cleaning out the home. She takes pictures of the comics by putting them out on her driveway. She still has to ship and then I have to handle it page by page and then it gets shipped again to CGC for a press and a grade. I just think it's a great story. I'll post the slabbed pic next. Back cover was flawless as well. Anyone want to guess on grade?
Awesome! Really high. Looks like a Gaines Copy. I think I just saw a 9.8 of that book recently. I'm not sure I see anything worth dinging it for on the cover. Possibly a slightly fuzzy bottom left corner. The minuscule color break a couple inches in on the top isn't worth marking down for. Could be a 9.6. I'd never say that on any gold book, but we've seen the covers of probably 1000+ EC file copies ranging from about 8.5-9.8, most of which are 9.4s, 9.6s, or 9.8s. That looks as good as they do from what I see.

CGC has a real challenging job they've taken on. By nature, as collectors, hobbyists, of what amounts to a combination of fine art, 1st print editions of what we consider masterpieces, we are meticulous, demanding, scrutinizing, passionate about what we collect. They have to try to make everybody happy. It's not easy. With moderns, which I no longer collect at all, but the million dollar question is how do you separate a 9.9 from a 9.8. I have had graders insist to me that they can tell the difference. Bollocks. I can guarantee you, if you broke out all of the 9.8 Hulk 181s (not a modern, but it's to the point) and the one 9.9 and had CGCs top 10 graders pick one to be the 9.9, they'd all choose a different book, at best 2 of the 10 would pick the one deemed a 9.9, the one that is probably worth $500k, as opposed to $35k. There's no easy way around that problem though.
This is a different issue though. Though I don't see a reasonable way to expect CGC to try to track the history of book that they can't know, they also shouldn't be giving out a universal grade blue label on a book like the Planet 1 above. I can imagine it being worth $6k or more to some, but I too would prefer Spydee's 6.0 restored. It says what it is, and is in better shape. It looks substantially better. What's with whatever is going on up and down the spine on the 5.5?
Btw, though the book has issues, it's still awesome to whomever owns it. I don't own one, and would love to. But one thing it's not is unrestored. That's like a woman reclaiming her virginity, come on man.

lmfao, I think we all or almost all of us could relate. I'm like, I love that book, BIN price, hmm, is that the going rate? I've been in the same spot though. Someone asks if a book is for sale, name your price. I'm like, I can think of 3 or 4 about equal books I'd trade for it, but sell it umm, I'm sorry I can't come up with a number that works. What's the number that won't offend you, but you won't offer it to me?

Wow, definitely a good one to start with and it looks like you managed to picked it up at a pretty reasonable price to boot.
I remember picking my copy up back in the day when it was still deemed to be a Lou Fine cover. All I can say is that this must be one of the best covers that George Tuska has ever done. If I remember correctly, this particular issue for awhile there had a higher valuation in the Overstreet as compared to its surrounding issues. Definitely not the case anymore.
I actually love the use and combination of colors on this particular cover. Reminds me a bit of Seven Seas 6 and Funny Pages 40 which is the absolute creme de la creme when it comes to use of a range of varying colors on a cover.
Congrats again on an absolutely gorgeous pickup here.
Thank you sensei

Possibly. I didn’t look at it too closely. Unfortunately the sale won’t be recorded in GPA.
I haven't nailed down a pattern of which sales are recorded. I know eBay sales are all recorded, and online stores are not, but with auctions it seems some are and some are not?

That's a sexy cover, reminds me of Julie Newmar. Who's she sitting with? Ain't Catman, or Batman, or White Black Panther
