  1. Some new Marvel comics that I received recently. I'm not sure who the Marvel artists were during this time period but it's easy to see why Archie later employed some of the Marvel artists. The artwork on on these books seems much more refined than Al Fagaly's stuff at Archie during this same period. It's funny how Annie Oakley was kind of a carbon copy of Hedy DeVine:
  2. Which ones are still on your want list? I love the calendar. Thanks for posting it!
  3. I've always appreciated that Marvel comic were read and reviewed by Dr. Jean Thompson for appropriate content (). It gave me piece of mind. I wonder if anyone in recent years has ever located people, like Dr. Thompson, who were supposedly involved with reviewing the content of comic books. It would be interesting to here of their experiences.
  4. Santa was good to me this year. He brought me a lot of cool Marvel books. Marvel may have been the second rate teen books after Archie but they cranked out some cool covers. And they are good reads as well. 1st up. Patsy Walker. She was not their regular cheesecake character but they tried it on occasion, resulting in some nice covers: Frankie issues also featured some dynamic artwork: Junior Miss is not one of my favorites but I love this cover. The altitude of their seats in the stadium is emphasized nicely. Finally, an issue of Georgie: Marvel definitely knew how to grab your attention with great cover art.
  5. To 143ksk, which of the DC or other non-Marvel books do you enjoy? I like Millie, Patsy, Nellie, and Hedy from Marvel up to about 1950, before they started making Nellie and Hedy (and Millie to some degree) brainless along the lines of My Friend Irma or MLJ's Suzie. I haven't run across much teen humor from the other publishers that has caught my attention yet so I am curious about what others make for good reading.
  6. Thanks! Now it's complete. Only the best page was missing.
  7. Page 5 is there. Did it not show up?
  8. Finally, not only a cover, but a complete story from 1957.
  9. Those are great Laugh covers. Are those both Harry Lucey? I would guess #88 is but I can't tell about #78. I took this week off from work so among other things, I've been purusing my Archie archives. I have to make sure that I pull them out to enjoy them from time to time so that I can justify having so much money invested in them. Here are the covers of Archie Comics, pre and post Comics Code. This is the final issue of Reggie from 1954. Archie's Joke Book picked up the Reggie numbering going forward. When Reggie was revived in the 1960s, the series continued with number 15 as well and with the same cover joke as #14. I don't have Reggie #15 scanned right now, so hopefully I can find it and add it to this post.
  10. Here are some 1960s era issues: Some of the following are from the "Scrawled Publication Date" collection, a fairly high grade collection of Archie Giant size books identified by the scrawled publication date on the upper left corner of the cover. These turned up at my LCS about 12 years ago for $1 to $2 each. They are all in pretty sharp condition with glossy covers. Finally, this is a favorite B&V from 1962. It took a while to find a fairly high grade copy.
  11. That Jughead 28 reminds me of other favorite 1950s covers. The art was at its best during that period. Sorry if I've posted any of these before.
  12. I'm sorry to hear about the condition of those books. The original photos from the auction don't reveal some of the minor flaws that your scans do. I love the early Mad House issues. The one with Betty and Veronica as mermaids is one of my favorites.
  13. Are the Laugh 130 and 131 comics the copies from this auction? Ebay Laugh Comics Practically the whole series of Pep and Laugh monster covers were sold but they became too pricey for me.
  14. Here are some more of the Marvel teen books including some swimsuit covers: I like the pastel look of this cover. I always liked how Marvel featured the characters doing things together on the covers even though their paths never crossed in the actual stories. This was posted before. Take a look at Tessie on this cover and you'll see she looks a lot like... Betty on this cover: More swimsuits
  15. Okay, this doesn't compare with those Mickey Mouse Magazines from the 1930s but here are some early issues from Mexico. If you were a kid in Mexico in the early 1950s you could enjoy great Duck stories too within a year or two after the U.S. issues:
  16. You know, the problem with this message board is it makes you do things you didn't want to do... like spend even more money on comics. I had a ton of Archies and found myself getting interested in other publishers, particularly Marvel. First it was "oh, that Millie the Model #1 looks nice" then it was "hey, #2 has the Blonde Phantom, gotta get that." After that, I started checking out other Marvel humor from the 1940s. I love Archie comics and this was a natural progression. So then I thought I would just limit myself to the Millie the Model title in the 1940s. Then I saw the other great Millie, Hedy, Tessie, etc covers from this period. And so, the buying continues: This is a new one, I wish all my comics were as stunningly perfect looking as this one. It makes you wonder how a stray book from 1949 can manage to survive in such perfect condition. A stylish looking cover here: Now some DeCarlo period Millies although I don't know for sure if the cover on 89 is his work:
  17. This seems to be a pretty good price for this. Showgirls
  18. I've gotten kind of hooked on these Marvel 1940s humor titles. I've limited my focus to the Millie and Patsy Walker titles but I do like the anthology books with Millie as well. 1950s DeCarlo Millies are also appealing to me due to their Archie style humor. It took me a while to realize that in the early books, Millie's photographer boyfriend's name was based on the forbidden comic book word flick. When it appears in all caps, flick appears too similar to another f word. His name was later changed to the less offensive Clicker.
  19. I think this cover is a classic! Kind of an early Charlie's Angels: Another with just Millie and Hedy. Millie is slowly pushing Hedy out of the spotlight.
  20. I've never seen a 15 cent Archie variant from that time (about 1962-63.) I have Christmas Stocking #5 with a 35 cent cover price. That was supposed to be the Canadian price in the 1950s but the comic appears to otherwise be a regular U.S. copy.
  21. I'll be sitting here in Houston waiting for the storm to hit so I should scan the rest of that Pep series (with the side bar) so I can post them. That #132 was the toughest for me to find a decent copy.
  22. Here are some of my favorite Pep covers:
  23. This thread has been kind of slow lately so I thought a couple of Millies would be nice. Here are #2 and 8. I noticed that Heritage currently is offering the Mile High copy of #8. I think I'll have to stick with my cheaper copy.
