  1. A classic Archie scenario. The girls are upset and Archie doesn't know why. I think this is a Harry Lucey. The cover has no relation to any of the stories inside. This cover was recreated on one of the ealy digests in the 1970s. Finally, this 1995 cover combines the Archie characters with the real world
  2. There are probably a number of us who had the same childhood fantasies about finding rare comics. For me it was both Archie and Duck books. I finally got the Archie books and some of the duck books. Frozen Gold was the one I really wanted as a kid.
  3. Nice Pearl book! That's a tough one to find.
  4. I meant to post this several months ago but I had misplaced the Australian comic. Here is the cover of Ginger #9 recreated for the Australian version of Archie's Pals 'n' Gals, except that Ginger becomes Betty and Tommy becomes Archie. Here's the 2 side by side followed by larger scans:
  5. Here's another favorite of mine. I have a beautiful copy in a bound volume but I wanted an unbound copy and finally found one. This is 1953: and back:
  6. Interesting to see how long it took for foreign editions of some classic comics to appear compared to their US originals. The Finnish Scrooge #1 shown above has a 1954 cover date. Here's the original Mexican issue dated September 1952, not long after the US version. They must have had a rush on it. Here's the back:
  7. Great covers. Somehow, Porky without pants seems a little more risque than Donald Duck without pants.
  8. I finally got a copy of this issue. Thanks to the Creature from the Black Lagoon cover, I usually got outbid on it. The cover is detached at the lower staple but other than that, it's in decent enough shape.
  9. This is a new upgrade copy of Hedy #26 that I just received. Like the Millie #22, I think it's one of the more desirable covers in the run.
  10. This Millie #22 has been seen here before but it's always worth seeing again. It's one of the early DeCarlo covers and it's one of best covers of the early issues.
  11. my opinion is that the core of what Brad Savage (KK) talks about has some merit, but this is obscured by his hyperbole and myopism. KK wasn't banned because he promotes the collecting of OA. he was banned because he claims, and continues to claim, that buying comics is a waste of time and only a fool would "invest" in comics. it's all about the $$$$ for KK this person krazykat (who, in reality, is mild-mannered mortgage lender St....., whoops) was merely expressing first ammendment rights and got banned? Why? I seem to recall the ban being based on his constant attempts to bait other members into arguments. I don't recall anyone having a problem with his opinions about collecting original art but they did have a problem with what seemed like personal attacks on others who didn't share the same opinion. Free speech has a lot to do not only with expressing your own opinion but allowing others to express theirs, even if it's contrary to your own, without the threat of attack or reprisal.
  12. Great books! I've grown pretty fond of the Irma books. Here's one I got recently that's not quite in the teen category but I've wanted it ever since I started collecting Marvel's girl books from the 40's. It's a Canadian copy but the black cover survived better than the few U.S. copies I've seen that were somewhat affordable.
  13. Finally, an older issue from 1949.
  14. The rosy cheeks started fading in 1956:
  15. I always liked the "rosy cheeks" period during 1955
  16. Seeing the activity in this thread got me in the mood to add some scans as well so here are some issues that I've had out to read recently:
  17. Now that was a lazy thing for MLJ to do. It's not even redrawn; they just put Wilbur's head in place of Archie's. I've got an Australian Archie comic from the 50's that uses the cover art from an issue of Ginger but replaces Ginger's and her boyfriend's heads with Archie's and Betty's. I'll have to dig those two issues out.
  18. WOW! That's a beautiful book! Of course all of them are.
  19. Here are some Betty and Veronica covers from the UK:
  20. Those two "missing all the fun" covers are two of my favorites. I just ran across some of my UK issues. I like how US #1 covers were used on random UK issues such as this Jughead #10 from 1953. On the upper left, you can see where the No. 1 was colored over: I like the ad on the back cover also.
  21. 1957 Mexico, for some reason, changed the kissing cover and turned into Archie and Veronica enjoying dessert together. Notice how the artwork was extended at the bottom of the comic also. most noticable in Miss Grundy's dress.
  22. I'm in awe of bangzoom's collection. I was buying comics around 1972 when I was a kid. I wish that I had kept at it. I had an Action #15 in VG back. I don't remember what I paid for it but it couldn't have been more than $20 or so because I didn't have much money. I traded it years later but looking back, it makes me wish that I had continued collecting. The books were cheap back then.
  23. At least the risk of that probably isn't as great as with more modern books. After all, the highest grade copy of a lot of golden age books has been a Mile High or an SF or an Allentown copy for the past 20 or 30 years. That's a long time to pass without finding better copies. As nice as the books in this thread are, it doesn't appear that they would surpass the MH's although they are extremely nice looking. I think due to the scarcity/rarity of the golden age books, once you start talking anything from an 8.0 up, there are still going to be so few copies out there that collectors aren't trying to chase a .2 incremental grade increase. They are usually happy that they own a copy, especially a nice copy.
  24. Those Pep issues look like they may have all been from the same original collection. They all appear to have a beautiful sheen on the covers and fairly deep color.
