I've not seen numbers but I'd be shocked if the total number of any specific TPB being sold is not still pretty small.  The fact that there is thousands and thousands of TPBs in the market which seem to be available for $5 does seem to be attracting readers (based on what I see at Cons).  But I don't think this points to a renaissance in the comic book medium in terms of books being sold or product being produced.  There is definitely some good new innovative books being published but as a whole most books seem unexceptional which are being met with lack luster response from buyers (based on # of books being sold).

Book market so these are estimated sales to readers unlike Comichron/ICv2 numbers which are estimated sales to retailers.

I reckon there's plenty of dross in every era. They just end up being forgotten while the gems stand the test of time.

X-Men Gold #3 is going to have a JSC variant. I don't know the ratio but DCBS is already charging 4X what the (likely same ratio as Dan Mora variant is.. whoever the hell he is) preorder price for X-Men Blue #3's variant. Dammit... I really don't wanna pony up $50 for the preorder for a variant I haven't even seen yet. But my anal retentive main-X-Men-series complete-ism is demanding I do so.

Quite likely 1:25. I expect they'll get hammered with variant orders if they price it any lower. Midtown might carry it for less but that's on first come first serve basis so there's a risk they'll be sold out quickly.

Good luck.  I know you know that's a tough get, so that should have a premium for sure if you can land one.

I think the only 9.8 I wound up with from last year's foils was Wonder Woman (currently en rote to CGC).  Superman is a possibility as well.  This SuperSons Foil is a beauty but the spine dings I'm seeing make me think a press won't help it much.  It's not outrageous (I'm a tough critic, admittedly) but with the foil being so thin I always worry a press could do more harm than good.

The copies are borderline (some lift on the bottom). I have some titles on 9.8 sub with Dre so he's just gonna send the foils along with the regular subs. It's pre-screened 9.8 and Dre will only charge me if it passes. :)

No pressing. I'm a little concerned that might damage the foil, too. This is going to be for the PC. Sorta the centerpiece of the bunch (at least until I can get a Cover A double signed by Peter J. Tomasi and Jorge Jimenez).

Just received my ECCC Foil variant a couple of days ago.  Makes a beautiful centerpiece to my SS stash as well!

    That's awesome! Congrats. (thumbsu

I've requested Dre to try to have mine 9.8 pre-screened so it'll be a while before I get mine. Really hoping it makes the grade. :wishluck:

Going to have to monitor this one as well. I haven't even given these Walmart books a 2nd thought but if a Super Son's makes an appearance then I'm in. "Aerischan", I'll hook you up when/if they come out if you need'em. I just ask that we have some type of reminder as I'll forget.

That would be awesome. Thanks! :headbang:

Super Sons #1 was released 02/15/17 so with the aforementioned 2-3 month delay, maybe they start showing up April to May 2017?

  6. BookScan Top 750 now out.

Congratulations to Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda (TAKEDA Sana?). Monstress Volume 1 is Image's 10th best selling book on BookScan. Particularly impressive given #s 1-9 are all either The Walking Dead or Saga and #11 is Paper Girls Volume 1 by Brian K. Vaughan. :D

Together with Comichron numbers, that's 50K Volume 1s sold. Granted, Paper Girls v01 wins the combined number at ~56-57K.

Would you mind attempting to explain why 1:500 may be good, but anything beyond that 'crosses the line'? Is it just a psychological barrier, a gut feeling?

For me there isn't a practical difference, both seem absurd.

Honestly, I think anything above 1:100 is crazy. At least with 1:100 for something like ASM, there are probably a number of comic shops that qualify just from their normal orders.

Granted, I usually ignore most variants with a price tag higher than $15. Most are just pretty covers with crappy interiors. Oh well, guess the interior doesn't really matter once they're slabbed.

Damnitt again..threw out a cheap bid and won...ughhhh

Lol, at least it's not the $10+ retailer exclusive variants (not including shipping). I used up a significant chunk of my comic budget on the Super Sons variants. :D

Thank goodness I just dropped a ton of Marvel titles (and had some that Marvel cancelled). :p

Do obtaining multiple signatures on a book you eventually get graded/slabbed devalue the book at any point?

Signatures are a personal preference. Some like them and will pay extra for autographed comics. Others don't want any scribbles on their books.

Interesting. Usually orders for 2 drop off a lot. That's really remarkable in this current market. Either speculators continue on this book which I doubt or they just didn't purchase a lot.

Perhaps some of the speculators have gotten burned on some titles that never went anywhere. :p

Lol, already have this one (DCBS Rebirth Overstock). Not quite NM (VF+ to VF/NM) but it was only $2.99 when BIN on ebay was ~$10-15. Also bought the 2nd printing with red Rebirth header and background (15% off cover at Midtown) but even that is out of stock now. Wish I had bought extra of the 2nd printing. It looks really spiffy. :D

Superman #10 and #11 (read via comiXology) were darned fun and what had me geared up for Super Sons in the first place. I got into DC Rebirth late and unfortunately, the first print was already out of stock on Midtown, TFAW, etc. by then. :D

Great! Thank you! It should be a fun printed cover too. I don't think there are going to be titles on it, just a huge Skottie image:) I hope you enjoy the series!

Sadly, Comixology is a garbage scam and I don't post on there anymore. They have a trade of the first 3 issues and that's it.

Amazon has the first 4 books though, in print and on Kindle!

Ah, ok. Will get them from Amazon Kindle, then. :)

    Howdy gang!

The latest volume, Farlaine the Goblin ~ Book 5: The Vaultlands,  is in the March Previews this month!  (Diamond Code: MAR172021)

Here's a short 10-page preview if you'd like to check out the series Graphic Policy calls "the best comic I've read all week": https://www.previewsworld.com/Catalog/MAR172021

But what makes this exciting for the collecting community is that I managed to get a Skottie Young variant cover, which will me mixed in at a 1:3 ratio.

As my fun ads like to point out, this will probably be one of the rarer Skottie variants since this is a self-published book with a tiny print run under 1500 total copies. (So maybe there will be 500 copies of this variant?)

Luckily, it should also be pretty easy to attain right now - just contact your local comic shop and pre-order 3 copies of the book!

    Enjoy:)

First time I've heard of this series (in fairness, I didn't really get into American comics until late last year).

I don't care about rarity but I do love Skottie Young variants and this looks amazing! Definitely buying 3 and picking up the first 4 issues through comiXology. :D

Not to be a downer but, anyone think these will go anywhere? I've heard the story is good, and it'll be their first team-up (I think) but i'm trying to limit my spec books so I haven't picked this one up yet.

I didn't buy these for spec. Honestly, I expect to see most of these on clearance sales rather than appreciate.  If you want spec, better bet is Superman #10. I'm just really loving the series right now which is why I'm collecting all the variants, even the Simone Bianchi which I'm not a fan of. Felt wrong that I had just that one variant missing from my collection and it was just $10 anyway.

And just bought the ECCC Foil cover from Toast.....damnitt!

Lol, I'm ordering mine from Dre along with the Wild Storm Foil. :)

First batch of variants. I received the Francesco Mattina and Simone Bianchi after I already took this pic and I was too lazy to stage them to take pics again. Apparently, I already had the EBAS, too, but had too many comic mailers that I missed opening that one. :p

Polybagged with board inside - presents as NM/NM+ or better, maybe higher. Selling sealed. Did my best to pre-screen but they are polybagged.

    $35 raw NM or better

I liked it a lot...my LCS didn't have any of the Lee covers for some odd reason. I need to track one down. Also I need to get in gear and read Vol2 of Stormwatch (and Authority).

Originally, Jim Lee variant was supposed to have been 1:50 and Jim Lee B&W 1:100 with no returnability. Some retailers complained I guess since DC eventually made Wild Storm returnable. I reckon it's because of this change that DC made the Jim Lee variant to free to order and had the Jim Lee B&W variant exclusive to ComicsPro attendees.

Maybe your LCS didn't know about the change?

  19. 5 hours ago, Mercury Man said:

Exactly.  From a character driven standpoint, their Comic Book Universe is a mess, compared to their movies.  You will not get new readers by confusing them right off the bat.

I understand demographics, and I understand the readership is slowly changing.  I think the stat is more women are reading comics/graphic novels than men (someone correct me if I am wrong).  But guess what, there is nothing written that says they don't want Steve Rogers, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, Clint Barton etc etc.  As for female and minority characters-  CREATE MORE OR FURTHER DEVELOP THE GREAT ONES YOU HAVE !!

Some interesting stats from one retailer:

    http://www.fantomcomics.com/blog/2017/02/13/2016-review-comic-book-shop-talks-comic-book-sales-trends/

While I do think Marvel would benefit from synchronicity, comic shops would be remiss if they don't recommend Marvel's excellent backlist to newcomers either via back issue floppies or collected editions. Collected editions such as TPBs and HCs would probably work best on a newbie. They're familiar with the book format and it's generally far easier to read one omnibus TPB than 20 or so individual floppies that are bagged and boarded.

I began reading Marvel starting from the Death of Captain America arc, Black Widow (2010) and Winter Soldier (2012) via Marvel Unlimited. Coming from the movies, those series felt familiar and just enhanced/fleshed out characters I was introduced to on the big screen.

The staff at my LCS was polite and nice enough. However, on my first visit, they were pretty busy talking Magic and Yu-Gi-Oh! with regulars. If that had been my first entry into superhero comics instead of Marvel Unlimited, I probably would've ended up buying Civil War II and 1) the LCS would've lost me as a customer, and 2) likely never bought another superhero comic ever again. Instead, I had gone there knowing exactly what specific comics I wanted to buy thanks to Tumblr recommendations and knowing which creators I liked from Marvel Unlimited. Pretty much all I needed to do was grab the issues I wanted off the rack and pay for my purchase. I even have a file with them now.

I know the feeling...Im gunna wait on the foil covers until Doug has them in hand for sig opps..I'll prob buy it CGC' then...same with the Adolfo cover too

I'm just sticking mine in Mylites2 + top loader. It wouldn't feel right to have only some of the variants slabbed and it's just too expensive to get all of them slabbed. Also, the Kirkham 9.8 slabs are, I believe, Voldie, while Mattina is CGC and I need that to be consistent, too. :p
