Some decent prices on pieces I was following on Day 1 of the International auction:

Overall, I saw very few :whatthe: results, a lot of stuff that was in-line, and a lot of stuff that felt a bit squishy.  Me and some friends picked up some nice bargains on the lower end (the piece I bought I'm told was listed much higher on a European dealer's site previously) but there was a lot of stuff in the mid-range that seemed pretty  meh to me price-wise as well.

Maybe the most surprising was the Herge Tintin piece which sold for $15K against a posted estimate of $30,000-$60,000. But there were plenty of other results that favored buyers over sellers I thought - IMO those two FF #27 pages went cheap ($22.5K each) given the content (even accounting for the George Roussos inks); the catalog cover painting only fetched $8.1K and the Kent Williams DD/Elektra painting only brought $10K, which seems stupidly low for a well-known piece with two very popular characters from that time period.

That said, I'm still expecting very strong results for the upcoming (U.S.) Signature Auction as I suspect it will draw far more buyers than this mixed bag of European and U.S. art (lacking in marquee pieces, it has to be said) did.

That's been discussed for years, actually. Arnold wants to do it. I think they'd be better off rebooting it with a younger actor.

    Decades at this point.

As much as I love both Conan and Arnold, I think this is a pairing that is now past its sell-by date unless they want to digitally make Arnold look 25 years younger a la Harrison Ford in the flashback part of the last Indiana Jones film.

Hater alert: What on god's green earth is going on with the anatomy over all? That intersection of thigh and waist is a trainwreck. It's like one big fused glob of muscle.  Of course, I'm not in the buyer pool for something like this anyway, so it doesn't matter what I think.

I've heard it referred to as "Porno Thigh".

Once seen, it cannot be unseen.

  4. My three entries were all bought at public auction last year, so, easy to verify.

That said, I have Heritage hold all my purchases until I'm ready to have them shipped. As a result, I have some late 2023 purchases which will get shipped to me at some point this year and may end up getting posted on CAF. I would have no problem including these in the 2024 "Best Of" showcase as I don't count these until they are actually in hand. I mean, if you buy a piece on eBay on 12/31 and it doesn't arrive until Jan. 7, should that make it ineligible for that year's Best Of? IMO, no.

Most of the discussion in this forum after the last couple of Heritage Signature auctions struck me more as laments of the disappointed rather than the paeans of the triumphant.

People seemed resigned to prices not revisiting the peaks of the Pandemic.

There were some disappointing Heritage auctions in 2023 but last month's auction was a barn-burner. (shrug)

Based on the weekly Heritage auction that just concluded, I have to say that the rumors of the death of the OA market have been greatly exaggerated.

What rumors? If anything, I'm surprised that prices haven't been even higher lately given the 1999-2000 style froth (aspects of which are "worse than 1999" according to JP Morgan this week) that has enveloped the financial markets. (shrug)

Any particular reason for TIG over VMG for the vinyl?? Neither seems to have a census.

TiG has better looking labels than the hideous ones that VMG uses. They also have a partnership with Heritage.

Also, VMG downgrades sealed albums if they have a store price sticker on them (perhaps not coincidentally, they offer a "sticker removal service"...) whereas TiG does not. Price stickers can often provide valuable information that help date the pressing of an album (since the exact same sleeve was often used for later pressings) and are often really cool looking in and of themselves. All things considered, I generally prefer albums to have a store price sticker on them as 9 times out of 10 it's a net plus.

I can't find the thread at the moment, but on a collecting goal thread I think in 2023, one of my two goals was a Miller Daredevil page fighting ninjas, so subject matter this is pretty much exactly what I wanted.  I can't think of the right words to phrase this, and Gene mentioned "artistic elements" in the post above, but to my not very trained eye, the page doesn't scream "Miller".  Maybe I am just trying to talk myself out of spending a lot of money.  Would someone please (Gene or Scott or somebody who has expertise in Miller) mind (and send me PM if you don't want to do it publicly).elaborating on the "artistic elements" on this page?  Thanks in advance.

Well, it's got Daredevil fighting The Hand and DD is drawn in a variety of Miller-esque fighting poses. I would say that there are more desirable 4-panel layouts (Lots. Of. Crates.) that could have given the fight panels more breathing room, but, at the end of the day, it's Daredevil fighting ninjas from a memorable part of the run with full Miller scripts and pencils. Is it the best Miller DD piece? No, but, it's an excellent example and you could certainly do a lot worse IMO...

On an unrelated note, there were a few really great pages of the Kirigi character that I enjoyed looking at on CAF..  I never thought to inquire if they were for sale (they weren't marked as such).  They are not there anymore.  On the off chance the owner is reading this and they were taken down in anticipation of selling, please drop me a line as I would be interested.;.

I know where some of them are but know it would take unfathomable money to pry them out of their owners' collections.

I think the fact that now we are slabbing just about everything- shoes, lps, toys, cards, games, etc to be more about the fact that once the collectibles market fabricated a commodities market for the grade itself where the object  that is slabbed is almost secondary to be.....mostly.....greed and $$$$$. Those that preserved these things unopened to begin with, as in the case of LP's and video games, hot wheels, action figures have always been there among a small core of enthusiasts, everyone else doing it with things produced now in anticipation of it being worth something when it's GRADED AND SLABBED, in the near term, and again it's mostly FOMO and greed and $$$.

I just like to own cool stuff.. :sorry:

    lol

I would wager a fiver that this isn't really her. I know people change over time but nothing about this woman looks like her.

Here is a photo posted by someone claiming to be her niece (refuting the authenticity of the 2019 photo above) which looks much more believable:

Regarding the DD 181 page, how would you compare it to the one in the upcoming auction?  I don’t own a Miller DD page but am actively looking for one and was very tempted on the 181 page.  It doesn't have DD in it, but is that really what fans of Miller’s work are looking for?  I always thought it was the surrounding characters that he had the most profound impact on (Bullseye, Kingpin, Punisher, and obviously Electra and Stick).  Yeah, ideally I would want DD interacting with them, but if they are “artistically equal”, does a Bullseye only page rank below a DD only page (and I am leaving out the 181 bonus points)?  Also, and I don’t have the proper words for this but hopefully you get my point, but isn’t the shading, motion and black and white contrasts that are on this page, especially the 4th panel, what made Miller’s work so groundbreaking?  Very interested in what an expert has to say (Gene, anyone else feel free to chime in).

Re: DD #181 page in the last auction vs. DD #174 page in this auction

I think the #181 page is better drawn, better looking and is from a more important issue, but the #174 page has Daredevil fighting The Hand which is probably what more people are looking for content-wise than a Bullseye-only page. There are certainly those who collect Miller for the artistic elements and will prefer the #181 page, but, I think more people would want Daredevil on the page, in action. I think a Daredevil-only page > a Bullseye-only page, though, Elektra+Bullseye (the #181 fight sequence) > any page featuring Daredevil in the run. And given the scarcity of #168-181 Elektra pages (and she being a major creation of Miller's), I think many of those would also be > Daredevil-only pages.

Given where prices are these days, if you are looking for a "one and done" type of example, I think you have to go with the #174 page. If you like the #181 page better from an artistic standpoint, that's fine, but, then I think you have to ask yourself whether that's enough or whether you still need a page with Daredevil on it as well to fill that hole. 2c
