  1. the bouncy light makes this really hard to read. Given that, I can see some chips on the back but mostly I have a lot of reflections and they;re out of focus. I'm not willing to cough up numbers for it at this point and I have four copies of it.
  2. I don't have any problems with an 8.5 actually. I don't see anything to tear it down from there. But, what do I know? If the 16 pulls an 8.5, this should, so brace yourself.
  3. you got me beat. Nice book. The issues I see are only in the upper left spine corner and a little abrasion below that corner which I actually suspect is caused by the staple forcing the corner upon the original newstand and making the abrasions. I'm at a 9.0. maybe a 9.2. sweet.
  4. I indeed had great hopes for the AF15 . I based my scale on Overstreet when I started and then got a dose of reality when it comes to the monetizing of comics. I've been learning hard. I certainly didn't think I was insulting anyone commenting on chipping. I was observing that chip grading is something that has a lot of tolerance and I don't know why there are books with them and there are books without them getting a lot of latitude in the grades. . Grading on this level is at this point opaque to me. I think this book could be a 3.0 and I think it could be a 3.5. If it's a 3.5, all the better for the owner. I wish him no ill will.
  5. I'm at a 5.0. There appears to be a staple tear on the lower left and that's a lot of color breaks. The stain is pretty substantial on the back. It's an awful lot nicer than mine.
  6. the upper rear cover is a tiny bit ragged and I see blunting on three corners although it's really minor. The cover doesn't seem to sit quite square but it sure looks white. Mine has been pressedat this point . I have one tiny blunt in the spine front corner. All others are square. The cover sits better. it has one very small chip on the back cover. Nice and white. I thought it could pull a possible 9.4. Wrong. Based on that slab, which I got back about two weeks ago I got a 9.0 , I'd give this an 8.5. It could as easily pull a 9.0. Very nice book. Mine was in that box of comics in the abandoned school bus. The price was right. Who knows?
  7. I'm sure there are people who actually know why the chipping can be so intense in marvel books as opposed to others. It's beyond my pay grade but I certainly find it to be a glaring condition frequently on grades below a 5.5 actually and get terrible down below a 4.5 or so it seems to me. To ignore chipping makes no sense to me since there is an ample supply of books that simply don't have it. Somehow ignoring chipping while putting full focus on something like a small stain just muddies the waters. I think we would all like to have a level playing field as far as grading goes from CGC but we don't. On high value books, it means thousands of dollars. It's probably better to bid the book and not the slabbed grade. But.. that's sort of like telling someone to bid the 50 dollar bill, not the hundred dollar bill if you're asked about relative value. I personally like Franklin myself. Owning an AF15 is quite an achievement in itself. Monetizing it is a slippery slope.
  8. That's much clearer. It sort of radiates out of that corner like a ripple in water. Does it affect any of the content pages? Based on that, I'd be more inclined to a 8.0-8.5.
  9. what is going on with the upper left corner on the back cover? It's hard to read.
  10. That stain on the top appears to be on the front and the back and that implies that it goes through the book. Stains really seem to bring grades down. Beyond it, there is some abrasion of the color around and about the spine and a slight color check on the leading edge middle. I am thinking a 7.0 because of the stain. Otherwise a nice book.
  11. In that there would appear to be a consensus that the book got a high grade compared to estimates. That;s fortunate for you. Nothing to complain about. I don't think it to be socially awkward at all/ I still think a 3.0 was the accurate assessment. If you're selling it, you did well.
  12. indeed, if that corner on the back is actually missing, down to 4.0-4.5 tops. As I said its quite hard to read from the scan.
  13. The only thing I can see bringing this book down is the area around the spine, really from top to bottom where the color has broken from what I would guess was rolling the book up at some point or somehow creasing it about 1/3 inch out from the staples . It's one of my favorite covers. Good corners. I'm thinking 7.5 unless someone can point out stuff I'm missing. I don't have a grip on how CGC would downgrade the spine stuff. The rest looks nice. Better than the one I've got.
  14. I can't tell if the lower right cover has a tear, or just a color break where the man in brown is running away. The lower right is stressed generally but not intolerably. The lower staple appears to actually have a tear around it and is not well aligned compared to the upper one placement which is a systemic problem in putting books together. The rear stain is substantial and it's hard to tell what the discoloration between the staples on the rear is. The upper right cover appears to have some sort of mild stain running through the comics code authority label and runs down to below the rampage part. I have to wonder if the stain on the back lower comes through the content pages all the way to the stress on the lower right cover. I have most of these Spiderman as raw so I can really compare them. 6.0-6.5 Nice book to own.
  15. I recently sent in two ASM129's , both bought on the news stand when they were new. Both stored away immediately and dragged out after Christmas. One came back as a 9.4 and the other an 8.5. The 8.5 actually looked better on the cover and the corners than the 9.4 did. Both have white pages. The difference? On the back of the 8.5 is a tiny stain, about 1/8th inch long and very light. Given that experience, I think the stain from the crumbs are going to hurt you. I got an ASM 16 back at the same time. I can't recall where I got that but it was before 1970. It looks more like a well cared for silver age comic. It got a 9.0. I still don't really get it. I suppose Consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.
  16. It could have just as easily been a 3.0. You did fine.
  17. Hard grading. I see some corner rounding. I see some slight yellowing on the upper rear spine but nothing that drags it down. I see an 8.5. I'm trying to understand how an objective grading system would differentiate between a silver age and a bronze age book. Isn't grading supposed to be objective, not ageist?
  18. I would get a consultation on what a press would do with that upper right cornerif you're willing to spend money on it. . I don't see the two spine abrasions as being as devaluing as is suggested. I think a 7.0-7.5 and possibly more if the press could help that crease. It's a pretty light color break as color breaks go and in the photo it's hard to tell what is reflection and what is a break. If it won't help, 7.5 tops. I have that book and its only damage is the upper left spine corner but it really brought it down. I do not think I'd have mine graded. You'd think for .15 cents they could have built these things better.
  19. The spine corners do bring it down. I'd say a 7.5 but then again, we're not seeing the back and it's hard to tell if it has creases. I have that in a 9.4 and have been disappointed in the market for it.
  20. I just pressed and graded an ASM 16 and it cost about $200.00 and came out a 9.0. My AF15 cost about $1000.00 to clean, (not press) and grade and it came out a 5.0.. Then add the shipping each way. Mine were expedited. I don't see a press helping your book but it doesn't have any apparent spine roll. The spine seems quite nice. The tears bring it down a bit as do the top corners. I'd say a 5.5. Yours is better than mine but mine isn't graded either.
  21. So going back well over a month or more: The AF15 got the lolly pop removed from the cover and was cleaned up a bit, and was actually pressed. It walked through CGC today and got a 5.0. I'll see it move out in a week I expect. .5 is a big deal in monetizing land. I'm not sure I'll ever see it again. Now it goes to auction I think. what I still have out there are the two 129 spiderman's and the ASM 16 which is a seriously rare book in its condition. It's back from pressing and moving ahead. Stir in the iron man 55 and I think the bulk of the value is out there on the big kids. I have learned so much in two months here. I've looked at no less than 2000 gradings of books. I'm pretty good in the 4.0 to 5.0 range. 5.5- 7.0 is still mystifying. 9.8 is still Rachael Welsh land. Unattainable.
  22. nice book! I see some small checks on the spine front and less so on the back. The yellow tone on the top cover appears to me to be a printer ink, is that the case?. Nice hardly rounded corners on the bottom, pretty nice on the top. The back shows very little yellowing. The luster seems a bit flat. Based on ones I have, I'd say an 8.0-8.5. What's not to like?
  23. How far into the book do those stains penetrate? They appear to be substantial and not superficial. If you look at the front cover about 3 inches from the bottom, there is a darkening on the front which I think is the stain coming through from the back. Is that the case? 3.0 as it presents.
