  1. Since you seem to know something about printing plates, I'll direct this question to you. Anyone else who is familiar with printing should feel free to chime in. Take a look at these 8 snips from Batman 1s. Do you see how the red along the bottom of the G in "SPRING" looks a bit blurry? (You can see a similar characteristic on other letters, too, such as on the bottom of the S in "SPRING.") Do you know what could cause that? Could it be from burrs on the plate early in the print run? Could it from wear to the plate or buildup late in the print run?
  2. Guests are the reason I stopped going to comic shows. I do no want to pay $20 or $30 to be able to see dealers' wares just because there are guests. To me that's like paying admission to go to the store. I couldn't care less about the guests. Maybe these shows could have a shopping-only admission price and a separate, higher price for people who want to have access to the guests.
  3. I think it was offered as payment to anyone who would rub out a certain former associate who defected to the competition.
  4. Sociopathic mouse with a lit cigar to sociopathic mouse stealing an unlit candle.
  5. Unpleasant surprise to unpleasant surprise.
  6. Flames, Tommy gun, and pistol to flames, Tommy gun, and pistol.
  7. The resubmission thing has been going on since before 2005. Even back in 2001 I knew guys who were sending the same books in repeatedly until they got a gift grade. I also knew a guy who cracked out a PLOD book with something minor and resubmitted it until in came back with a Universal label.
  8. Is that a reference to Rob's departure and the eleventh-hour-scan fiasco? Neither seemed to hurt the prices realized on the Jon Berk and Phil Cole books that were just sold. They have a large enough customer base that there aren't going to be any deals on anything. There are too many eyes on their auctions, just like there are too many eyes on HA's auctions for anything good to fly under the radar.
  9. 9.4 White pedigree copy from 1949 to 9.4 white pedigree copy from 1949.
  10. Just for @KirbyJack—male taillights cover to male taillights cover.
  11. I don't think that corporate raiders like the group that bought CGC think that long term. They want to make a quick buck so that the annual profits look good, then they'll sell and let the hapless buyer deal with the fallout.
  12. Male taillights cover to male taillights cover.
  13. Back around 2013 or 2014, the camp Whiz 55 was on eBay for months (or maybe years), and no one would pull the trigger on it. I can't remember what the asking price was, but it would probably look like a bargain now. (I thought about buying it, but the cover is one of the goofier ones.)
  14. L. B. Cole black cover to L. B. Cole black cover.
  15. Yes. Chances are no one else cares, but guys like that are always convinced that others envy them. If you understand the concept of narcissistic supply, then you understand the single-highest-graded copy chasers.
  16. It doesn't matter to them because there's only one 9.9 right now. The ego boost they would get would carry them into 2025 and beyond.
  17. You have to understand that there are some collectors out there who will pay almost any amount for the bragging rights to owning the only (for now) 9.9 copy of a key issue (even if there are a few dozen 9.8s that look nicer—and there probably are). I will not be surprised if it hits $200K. So you think it will hit $200K or $500K?
  18. I'm very sorry to hear this. I enjoyed his many passionate political Facebook posts during the last election cycle. I had no idea that he was ill.
