  4. Here's a test. Of the 2 copies, which do you pull out and look at more? Is it the slabbed autograph one or is it the raw copy. How many times have you read the raw copy? How many times have you showed off the graded copy? If you have them on display, take them down and put them both away for a while. Over the next few days or hours, which of the 2 do you miss more? Keep the one you miss most, sell the other. Another option: put both online with ridiculous BIN prices and review all offers. See which one garners the highest offer and decide.
  5. My picks in order: Highest grade for the money for: ASM 129 (captures the spidey and Punish fan bases) IH 181* (captures the hulk, wolverine, and x-men fan bases) *probably should be first but feel stronger about ASM 129. ASM 300 (captures the spidey and venom fan bases) NM 98 (captures the Deadpool and X-men fan bases) Any further back and you're looking at higher risk for characters at that price or fair to incomplete/qualified or restored grades for characters with guaranteed staying power. Maybe find some good deals on multiple low grade FF's, TOS, or JIM's to diversify the characters and get more than 1 book.
  6. It burst for me a while back but the whole storytelling did me in. I know the premise is about "what happens to the survivors after the zombie movie ends" but now it seems like they've lost both the original mystique and draw for me as well as reached the depth of the theme. For me, the zombies and the mystery of how it started, where did it come from, and how to stop it were the reasons that kept me watching every episode and reading the comics. Now that they've learned to basically cope with the existence of zombies the show has basically turned into just any other post-apocalyptic survivor series. I'm not interested in a survival show that happens to have zombies just because of the really cool characters. The really cool characters kept me going for a while but when you can be assured that those really cool characters are never safe then you begin to lose perhaps the last vested interest in the show. Daryl and Rick can't die. If they did, that would pretty much be the end for everyone else. Many like me aren't interested in replacement characters. I used to anticipate each episode. This season I didn't even care to watch the premier and finally did 3 days later because my girl is still into it. Frankly the episode sucked. Now it seems like they'll jump the ultimate shark and eventually bridge the two shows later next year (Fear the walking dead - which I gave up after 2 seasons) to try and keep this dead zombie series going for as long as they can. If they ever get back on track trying to figure out what caused it and how to "cure" the zombie plague, I'll jump back in and recommend to anyone starting up to just watch the first season and a few key episodes where characters die and where the new ones that are still alive can be introduced. It was a good run, Kirkman, but might be time to move on to something new.
  7. As a collector I sometimes wonder if I am being a good steward of my collection mainly for those key issues, one of ones, and uber high grade pedigrees or am I selfishly putting irreplaceable historic pieces at risk just to be able to access them conveniently. Now I don't live among any of the high risk regions where many natural disasters frequently do occur and while I do take care to maintain careful climate and humidity controls, wealthier individuals than I can afford museum grade gallery style vaults better able to protect them against most contingencies. However, I wonder if any of the collectors that did/do live in those zones pay any consideration to the fact that IF and WHEN something does happen, there's little chance of being able to protect or preserve them when you will be prioritizing preservation of your life and the lives of your loved ones above all else. You could isolate those most valuable in a quick getaway bag similar to Aflecks character on the accountant. A Go-bag containing emergency essentials and your AF15, TECH27, and Action1. But what if you have 50 or more along those lines. Too many to carry in a bug-out bag. And what if you're not home or able to reach them in time. Perhaps a better alternative is to keep them in a remote bank or vault. Even the risk of rusty staples is better than a complete loss. But banks can flood or catch fire or be robbed if located in high risk zones. So then you are back to storing your collection in a more remote, less convenient location. Weekend trip to the Catskills to visit your collection? I would argue that we as collectors are actually the reason why so many well preserved copies of GA and SA keys still exist even if some of us do store them and live in disaster zones. If we didn't provide the market demand to own and try to protect them, these would have already been lost to time. In retrospect, those few unfortunate collections lost to recent disasters are outweighed by the hundreds that continue to survive today and into the future because of collectors. However, if I was the victim of a natural disaster with high probability of it reoccuring, I might consider relocating before restarting a collection of keys if that is an option.
  8. Or the erroneous comiclink or ComicConnect listing of "Highest Graded" for 9.8s when there are actually 1 or more in 9.9 or 10. Happens at least once a year and I usually report it but sometimes they don't address it fast enough. Cgc registry helps with that. However, there's not much you can do if the registry isn't updated before the sale. I've seen a new 9.9 popup on the registry right after and auction ends.
  9. I'm super impressed with the level of effort and extent to which they went to research and replicate as accurate a time period and setting for the show as possible. They could have gone to any comic shop in LA or chosen one of the more publicized comic stores in the country to source info for the period. I suppose they know their fan base would be the anal sort that would easily pick apart any discrepancy the way comic fans pick apart any scene of a movie or show adaptations that aren't considered cannon. My personal comcic shop experiences in 1989 were of large musty dimly lit stores with rows of long boxes and walls covered in higher end books and a condescending clerk. I wonder what version will be portrayed in the show. Very cool Mr. B. I guess I'll have to finally give in and start binging big bang theory now.
  10. I have to agree with Hudson. I saw less GA than I normally do and I only noticed because that's not my focus but love to look at the covers. I found a fair amount of later eras filling in the gaps on the wallbooks where GA might normally be. I also have to agree that with the exception of greg reece's booth (who brought a new 120 box collection on top of the standard high grade GA/SA/BA/CA stuff), nearly all the other dealer stock was the same stuff I saw from those that were at awesome con, heroes con, or SDCC. Other observations were: Many dealer walls have become top heating up books on ebay. Makes sense but those books seemed to have crowded out the normal keys. And if that is being done to cater to the speculator or young movie collector crowd, it must be working as I frequently heard buyers asking if the dealer had "insert latest hyped movie/show/speculative book". Often the response would be, one of among "it just sold" or "you're the x guy asked me that today" or "it sold first thing today, I never have them for long." It does concern me but I was able to find a couple of HTF HG variants I'd been looking for that only seem to exist on ebay (thanks Jason). Hope to find something more to spend on tomorrow.
  11. Well that explains it. If these are the types of folks average collectors are up against in every new comic auction, we're screwed. Nicolas cage might have just been the tip of the iceberg. Oh the irony. We pay for the streaming service to watch the cool new series that pays the cool actors that happen to be collectors that compete against us for items for our collections. Ergo, we bid against ourselves. The answer: stop paying for whatever streaming service that employs them. Still pretty cool tho.
  12. I think the graders for those are grading the female characters on the cover.
  13. The #100 cover drove my OCD nuts. I've owned 3 copies before I finally found the one that I could live with. The wrap was one thing but finding one with the face and yellow banner that I could live with was the hard part. You can tell that the art does extend below the cut but I don't believe any copies in HG exist that show the full round circle spidey face without also cutting off the "G" in the title or the comics code box or even the price box on the top edge. Trying to even determine what is the most symmetrically "centered" about that issue is entirely subjective as sometimes the semi-circle spidey face wtih the cut right below the eyes looks best but other times the yellow banner tapering to a point at the BLFC corner looks more symmetric. This one has the most of the face I've seen but if not for the miswrap and off-center cut you can tell that the "G" in AMAZING would be nearly cut off if it was more perfectly cut/wrapped. https://comics.ha.com/itm/bronze-age-1970-1979-/the-amazing-spider-man-100-marvel-1971-cgc-nm-94-white-pages/a/121635-14119.s?ic4=GalleryView-Thumbnail-071515# The OA for that issue doesn't actually have the full spidey face circle but clearly also has more art above the title of which both top or bottom get sacrificed during the printing and cutting phase. http://www.comicartfans.com/ForSaleDetails.asp?ArtId=462510 The really interesting thing to note when comparing these two images is that the bottom half of the printed issue spidey circle face does not actually match the one on the OA. Look at the shape of the center webbing down from the center of spidey's eyes. Plus it appears the OA is cut off after the first band of webbing whereas the printed issue has 2 visible bands of webbing. See below: Looks almost like the banner or spidey circle in the OA was a recreation overlay or a 2nd drawing after the initial printing. Of course I'm not sure how the whole transfer of OA to printing plate took place so it's possible the difference occurred only on the plate but not on the OA. Sucks because I was really hoping to validate how much actual art was cut off from the OA when it went to printing/cutting. Oddly, another discrepancy is on MJ's hair lines on the right side just above the spidey circle. In the comic she has 3 full bands, a half band, and then 4 full bands. In the OA she has 1 full band, a half band from the top, 2 full bands, another half band from the top, and then 3 more full bands. Makes me wonder just how different the OA on most comics is to the actual printed issues. Anywho, it no longer matters to me. I'm happy with my copy.
  14. I'll likely abstain from September's and just track the bids. Got to recover a bit from the Summer Auction hangover. Need to find a cheaper hobby.
  15. I never said I bid GPA prices, I only used it as a reference for how strong prices were going compared to past observations. What I also didn't say, but was implying, is that these prices this year are stronger than past auction prices I've also tracked relative to their 12 month gpa at the time. The 2 books I won I actually bid the highest I was willing to (well over gpa) in order to win them and it seems that's everyone's strategy these days. Not everyone uses gpanalysis but it seems that many that do use it as the floor as opposed to the ceiling Ive tracked clink auctions for the last 5 years and clink auctions up until a year and a half to 2 years ago, many prices on closing bids were at or below the 12 month gpa for books in my focus. Guess we r in a "hot cycle" for those books and I will have to settle for what I'm willing to pay or just lose out. Btw, I'm still curious if there's other price indices you guys use outside of gpa, go collect, ebay, or heritage auction archives?
  16. Whoever did that restoration artwork on your Hulk 181 should be fired. Seriously though, CGC should resolve this pretty quickly. Hope you do get your Hulk 181 back.
  17. As opposed to what? Overstreet? What pricing "indicator" should I be using then? I didn't consider many of the ones I was after as "hot" SA/BA books but if they are I guess I'll have to wait until they cool off. Just curious...what do you use to price these so-called "hot books"? Seriously, I really want to know.
  18. Prices were very strong on the ASMs. I tracked most of them and had interests in about 9 of them nearly all went above 12 month GPA with several setting new GPA highs and blowing past all previous sale prices. I saw 2 ASM 9.8s double the 12 month GPA. Many of those were those with low census counts and great eye appeal. I saw only 2 or 3 that went for what I would consider a value compared to GPA and cover and page quality. I missed out on 1 of those by signing on late but was ok since it allowed me to save up for the ones I put in stronger bids for. I put strong bids in for 4 and only won 2 and lost the other 5 I had moderate bids in at. In all I'm happy with my wins but at this rate I'm going to have to settle for just 1 or 2 books per auction compared to past years when I'd nab 5 or 6 for the same amount.
  19. All the time and it's become more of a reminder that what I'm doing is just a hobby and not a life's goal. I recently missed out on a key book I had been waiting to come to market for such a looong time. I had every intention of bidding what was necessary to win it but I screwed up the bid. When the time came to click bid, I misinterpreted the bid options and thought I had placed a proxy bid when in fact it never went through. I missed out (book went for a great price) and was devastated for a week. (Heritage lost out on probably an extra $7000 in Buyer premium) I felt sick to my stomach. Couldn't look at comics or anything for a while. Every day it ate at me and disturbed me. Then more important things in life start to take over and you realize there's sooo much more to life than collecting comics. I think many of us get wrapped up in the goal of collecting that we lose sight of it as a hobby rather than an ultimate goal. Sure I know there are some of us on here where it is their ultimate goal and they may have nothing else going on in their lives to fill the void that comics tend to consume. So when I miss out on a book, I like to think it went to someone who really needs it more in their lives than me. On the flip side, I used to get winners remorse early in my collecting days when I would overpay for books even if I could afford it but mostly because the books themselves weren't that significant in the collection. Just fillers that tend to not come up that often. Not rare, just not always up for sale. After getting them in the mail I look at them and ask my self did I really need to pay that much for this? How is this really improving my life, enjoyment of it, and state of well being? I've begun to weigh the cost of a purchase against something else that I like that would give me more enjoyment/benefit. Now I only go big after books (like the one above that had both personal and collecting significance) that I know won't cause me buyers remorse. One thing that helps me avoid buyers remorse or anticlimactic feelings is buying those more common books at a discount or value. Either just getting lucky in a slow auction or finding nice raw candidates. Another thing that helps with avoid buyers remorse for key books I love having is pulling them out every now and then and looking at them if graded and flipping through them if raw. One more thing on the losing bids. Unless you're collecting HTF in grade GA or Gerber top 10 rarest comics, most books tend to come around again and sometimes in better condition/eye appeal that may allow you a 2nd chance to scoop them up sometimes even for a better price. So set your bids at a level that you know you won't get buyers remorse if you won it and stick to that. Let those who have nothing else in their lives or an infinite cash pool deal with winning it if they must have it. And then step back from your computer and go enjoy the rest of what life has to offer.
  20. Something tells me TATs will be taking a well excused hit for the rest of the year. This is why CGC needs a Site B or COOP site location. I'm thinking that recently declassified (thanks Biden) secret squirel government continuity operations nuclear fallout underground mountain base in Pennsylvania.
  21. I lose money on nearly every modern I buy. My biggest realized dollar amounts have been from AF-15s. If I was solely in it for the money I would only buy and sell that 1 book. But I am a collector so I overpay for reading a floppy instead of digital. Biggest loss was on a modern variant that was overhyped and inflated but quickly lost steam. Biggest percentage gain was on a rare HTF modern variant I found in a dollar bin.
  22. Ive beem tracking it since the beginning. All but 1 model had it going east or central. Looks like cgc and some folks on the west coast of florida were doing a wait and see. I was wondering when cgc would make an announcement. Looks like they finally did. "CCG is housed in a secure, state-of-the-art facility that is built to withstand hurricane conditions. Collectibles will be secured in CCG's vaults, as always, and procedures are in place to ensure the safety and security of all collectibles in our care." I just pray that cgc folks and people on the western coast are able to get out of the path now that they know it's heading that way. I'm trying to imagine what a "state-of-the-art facility that is built to withstand hurricane conditions" looks like and what counter measures it employs. I'm picturing a 3-level all brick building with a sealed elevated vault suspended within a vault with triple redundant power generation with 96-hours of battery power backup for climate and humidity control and security. And a triple redundant 1000Gpm water pumping system.
  23. Agreed. Get photos and a list of the books with any potentially unique or identifying defects on them out to the community. Post on here, that stolen comics site, other comic forums, and to all the neighboring outlets and venues they could sell including pawn shops. You need to make it as hard as possible for them to sell these books and make it as expensive as possible for them. Also provide a description of the individuals and any identifying mannerisms, features, or characteristics that might help others identify or at least avoid contact with them. Might also be good to make CGC and the other grading companies aware of the books in case they go the graded route as a means of "laundering" them. I hope you get these books back.
  24. I hate that this happened to you and I'm PO'd that this is becoming the new norm with comics since values have reached that level but I think the real lesson here is that we can no longer be casual when selling comics or really anything else of value greater than 5k no matter how innocent of an item it may seem. My friend, you may have just been lucky or enjoyed the benefit of a period of innocence selling in those previous times if you did those kinds of deals in front of a Carl's jr. My biggest craigslist purchase was for $1600 4 years ago and the guy was very careful to meet in the security office of his apartment building. My biggest in person purchase was for a run of OO ASM 1-117 5 years ago for $10,000 held at a trusted comic shop. The owner had a barretta 9mm on hand, closed the shop and locked the doors during the transaction. He provided escort for me to my car. My biggest sale over $10,000 was initiated on these very boards in PM and the transaction was conducted in person at baltimore comiccon at a dealers booth but only after performing extensive research on the individual and their reputation. I had also brought along some muscle to escort me from the convention hall to the bank across the street to deposit the funds. I think you get my point. If you do in person transactions with items of value exceeding $500+ no matter if from CL or FB or on here, ALWAYS take precautions to ensure the transaction can be completed safely and in a manner and an area that would deter any form of violence or theft.
