  1. 'Superheroes Decoded' on History Channel

I apologize if this has been posted already...

History is tapping some big names from Marvel and DC to uncover the hidden origin stories of comics' biggest heroes.

The cable network will air the two-part special Superheroes Decoded on April 30 and May 1, and it's got an impressive lineup.

Some of the talent interviewed on the show: Marvel legend Stan Lee, Avengers: Infinity War directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Marvel star Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, Iron Man director Jon Favreau and DC Comics writer Brad Meltzer.

Part one will look at the creation of iconic heroes such as Superman, Batman, Captain America, Wonder Woman and Spider-Man and track their development as it relates to U.S. history — from World War II to Vietnam to 9/11.

Looks like it will have some good stuff for Golden Age fans!

    Anybody else plan on watching...

  2. Is This Qualified .5 Tec 31 A Good Resto Candidate?

I have been on the hunt for an "entry level" Tec 31...

There is a Qualified .5 upcoming in a ComicLink auction...

Do you all think it would make any sense to bid on this book, with that idea of having it restored, if won?

I'm probably not a typical collector in the sense that I don't mind Restored books ... especially if they can help to conserve the book itself for many years the future... and, let's be honest, give a book's cover better eye appeal! (since it's in a CGC holder anyways...)

Or maybe I'm way off-base. I have no idea what kind of grade it might get if it were restored and re-graded? Would it still grade out as a .5 (just w/ a purple level instead of green?) I am not obsessed with the number or market value considerations (not envisioning a flip), although I do think they need to be taken into account for an "investment" of this size ... any opinions welcome (thumbsu

Also, as unrestored keys go up  do you think restored keys go up by same factors ?

    Just my personal opinion....

I want a Tec 31, and pretty much the only books I could consider, due to price, would be a 1.0 unrestored or a restored book. If I limit myself to just unrestored books I'm either priced out of the market or I have to get lucky that a 1.0 goes on the market and at the right price.

So I don't really have a "choice" in a way... if I want to get in on this book, I almost have to widen my search to included Restored copies (but I draw the line at TRIMMING, I just personally don't like it...)

If enough other people share my philosophy, then "entry level" GA mega key books in future would appreciate roughly equally (whether very low grade unrestored, or higher grade restored)

Totally agree it is so hard, as it is a combination of so few sales of restored  GA keys  over time and how to put a "formula" to it all.

Any other opinions, tricks, formulas that anyone knows of that is fairly accurate ? Anyone who has either bought or sold a lot of GA restored over the last several years and sees a trend?

Also, as unrestored keys go up  do you think restored keys go up by same factors ?

I have a sort of formula. Note, I am not an "expert" by any means.

However in 2013 I bought a 1.5 unrestored (Brittle) Golden Age key, and I recently purchased an additional copy of the same book, Restored 7.5 (extensive resto, but not TRIMMED)

I'm not sure which book counts as the "undercopy" lol

Note.. my thoughts do no apply to SLIGHT restoration. E.g a "Slight" resto 7.0 of a GA key, where the resto could possibly be reversed... obviously that's a special situation! And I wouldn't bid on a book like that b/c I wouldn't be confident (don't know enough about resto and how to reverse it)

So my own "formula" applies to more like , R-Extensive 5's, 6s and 7s.

I believe there is value in those books especially for GA mega keys... for instance Tec 31, not enough copies to go around. I would gladly acquire a nice Restored Tec 31!

In my point of view, the 'grade' of the Resto just doesn't matter much. I don't value an extensive restored 7.5 much more than a 6.0. Maybe 5-10% more or something. That's just me.

ASSUMING the resto book is not trimmed, I believe it has to be roughly valued to an unrestored 1.0 book? Or possibly a 1.5.

If it's restored and TRIMMED, then I might value it at 50% the value of a 1.0 unrestored book.

Other aspects of the restoration might matter more, or less (TRIMMING is the big one, for me).

But my point is, for an extensively restored book, I'm valuing it at 0.5x to 1.5x (roughly) of the same book in a 1.0 unrestored condition.

I don't think "30% to 50% of the same grade in unrestored" holds much water (not with me, anyway)...  and isn't what I've seen in the auctions lately for major GA books.

Again, this is all just my PERSONAL formula and thoughts. I don't claim my formula tracks the market or other peoples thoughts on pricing. On the other hand, I do have skin in the game and "voted" with my hard earned dollars!

  5. What Are Your Top 5 Most Iconic GA Wonder Woman Covers?

In 2013 I began collecting GA WW (tiny collection)

I stepped aside from the hobby for the last few years ... one out of state move and a few kids later ... I now have the "bug" again.

So putting aside her big 3 key GA books ... I'm wondering, what would you consider to be the top iconic WW covers of the GA era?

Note: my question isn't meant to be limited to just the Wonder Woman title... any other title that has Diana on the cover is fair game!

Well, based upon the initial post from the board member here, I assume he must be referring to the Supes 1 coming up in CC's Event auction next week:

    http://www.comicconnect.com/bookDetail.php?id=703674

Since it's still sitting at only $26K as of Thursday night, it looks like it still has a long ways to go to get into the $50K to $70K price range.  On the other hand, it might not sell for a premium to the normal price point since it doesn't present that nicely, especially with that huge chunk out from the front cover.  (shrug)

Not sure what the normal bidding strategy for these extended time auction formats are like.  Is it common for most of the bidding to be done at the end since nobody really needs to play their cards before the auction?  Or is there no point to wait because the auction house will simply continue to extend the time as long as bids are still being received?  ???

Just wondering since it seems that a large majority of the auction lots still have high bids nowhere close to where I would expect the books to sell for.  Of course, there's still close to a week left in the auction for all of these lots here, so I guess it's just a matter of wait and see.   hm   :taptaptap:

    1. I am definitely not the expert but yes, I could see that Supes 1 being less appealing to many on account of how it presents (missing piece of cover)

    2. Per your other question, my experience on this is from several years ago, but yes, much of the bidding was "day of" (w/ a lot of activity occurring even in the last hour for some lots)

1.0 is likely entry level.  It means more folks will consider this the best chance to get in and likely pay more then say a 2.0 or 2.5 or 1.8

Ok, please tell me if I understand this correctly...

... Price per point applies to low grade 2,3,4 (but not necessarily to 'entry level' i.e. 1.0)

... Entry level will tend to have a premium

So if price per point for Supes 1 is $50k...

    2.0 ~= $100k (assuming 50k price per point)

    2.5 ~= $125k (assuming 50k price per point)

    3.0 ~= $150k (assuming 50k price per point)

    4.0 ~= $200k (assuming 50k price per point)

But since a 1.0 would be entry level, it might sell for a premium above that '50k per point' rule? (e.g. a 1.0 might be worth 65k rather than 50k, if a 2.0 is worth 100k)?

Thanks for the knowledge and patience with me BTW :-)

  8. What's your valuation process for a higher value GA book?

I am curious as to everyone's process to valuate a higher value (slabbed) GA book.

The data at GPAnalysis is thin on many of these books (e.g., Batman 1), and then I almost feel the sales data past 18 (or maybe 12) months ago is hardly relevant for the higher value / key books.

So my method is to basically extract 3 or so recent sales of books which are in relatively similar in condition, and try to broadly fill in the gaps (while also accounting for appreciation, which again for the keys seems like it can exceed 20% per annum (!) )

Just curious as to everyone's valuation methods... if they have different data sources, etc.

EDIT/NOTE: I apologize, I posted this thread in the wrong subforum. Please move it to the GA subforum if possible, with my apologies.
