It was a very special collection, but access was only possible when Richard was around, and even then only tb and I were invited over.

Note:  I am not in any way involved in the future of the collection, just have enough background to provide advice that it is neither helpful nor worthwhile for anyone to reach out to the family.

Understood on that.  I hate that I didn't take him up on the offer to drive down and meet him.  I am likely to regret that at this point for the rest of my life....

    I sold Richard this comic.

It was apparently amongst his very favorites because he "made me an offer I couldn't refuse" when he learned of it, offered to fly me and my wife to New Orleans and put us up in a hotel so I could deliver it and visit him in person (which offer to my everlasting sadness I could not accept due to press of cases), and struck up a correspondence with me that I truly appreciate.

As I just asked over on the Ducks thread, anyone know what's happening with his collection? I wouldn't mind trying to buy this one back.

To add to this, if anyone has contact information for his family I would be glad to help them with anything related to his collection.  Like I said, I know I am somewhat close to where they are, but I don't have anything beyond that.

The ship has long ago sailed on “cheap” Okajimas… Way back when they first hit the open market, I bought a handful from Ron Murrary. They wern’t “cheap” even back then but special and I knew if I passed I would have been sorry so I tightened up my belt and bought them. Worked out very well for me…

Oh, I know.  I wasn't even aware of Okajimas until probably 3 years ago or so.  I figure it never hurts to ask...someone might have one they would let go for cheap, or at least reasonably priced.

I have tried to get one example from every pedigree for a video series I am doing.  Videos are posted on YouTube.  http://www.youtube.com/@ComicBookVeteran

Always open to new information on any of the pedigrees.  I need to do more and get them posted.

  4. Thanks for visiting this thread.

I don't think I have posted much in the Silver Age threads, but I am doing a video series about the Pedigree comics - I intend to have more videos about other books as well.  A HUGE part of my collection is Silver Age, so I will get there eventually.  Anyway, I am focusing on the history of comics and the pedigrees are the starting point.  I welcome views and subscribers of course.

I am first and foremost a collector - I am not looking to sell anything, but if that comes up later - then great!

My videos are really to build a knowledge base about the books.  I am not doing a hot 10 or top 10 or anything of that nature - so mine is a bit of a niche within the comic book collecting community.  If I am wrong about something or if you know something that I don't - please share it!!

I posted my latest video about the Curator Collection a couple of days ago.  Let me know what you think and how I can make it all better!  This particular one is Episode 12 - check out the others while you are there!!

    Thank you for your time!

  5. I think @Professor K was spot on.  Comics were the original medium for the superhero genre, but kind of a "side item" for the cartoons.

At the same time I managed to acquire a few of the Dell file copies of early Bugs Bunny comics recently.  I didn't buy them for investment or anything, but to preserve the history and heritage of them.  But otherwise I thought they were neat books!

  6. I guess I have taken the classic view:

    1938-1956 (AC1-SC4)

Possible sub-category of PCH and/or Atomic Age

    1956-1970 (SC4-GA76)

    1971-1985 (GA76-DK1)

The case could certainly be made for an "Atomic Age" during the early 50s.  And I really look at anything between 1956 (SC4) up through around 1964 as being transitional between the GA (or Atomic Age) and the Silver age.  They have a writing/art style difference that I think we all agree on, and those are the turning points in my mind.  The appearance of caped super-heroes (Phantom anyone??) would certainly be a change point or the implementation of the CCA would certainly trigger some changes as an example.

Yes, this is my recent project.  It ties in with something I have wanted to do over the last couple of years.  So far, I have 10 videos posted - some about me - some about pedigrees - some general comic content.  My intent is to spread knowledge.  I invite anyone to share information with me - correct me if I have something that is wrong - let me know additional information about something I post - or SHOULD post!

Some of you may recognize books that I have purchased from you - here on the CGC boards!!

I am doing this just for fun - if it turns into something bigger then that's awesome - if not - that's perfect fine with me.  I have collected comics for nearly 50 years, so I want to share the knowledge that I have for the next generation.  I am ALWAYS open for collaborations and am grateful for you reading this post.

These were consigned by me, and they are 100% legit (for those who don’t know, I was the person who pedigreed the okajimas originally).  Some of the books on the bottom of the stacks had moisture and termite damage, and these are examples of those.  Some had more pervasive damage, while others had localized termite damage on otherwise high grade books.  The nature of the way they were stored.

I would be extremely proud to own the worst condition Okajima book out there.  It would be a highlight of my collection.  @Blackmask if, by some chance, you have any in low grade condition like that you want to get rid of - let's talk!  I don't have a big budget, but I am looking to consolidate the stories of many of these pedigrees and want to do so by creating a video series on each of the pedigrees - I even have a few of them done!!  Okajima is one that I have kind of put out of mind because they are generally out of my league price-wise.

I feel like these books all tell stories that are getting lost in much of today's culture - so I want to preserve what I can and would love to tell the story of the Okajima pedigree with a book in hand.

Taking this question literally ...and for all I know the oldest CGC graded pedigree comic book isn't this one...

But how many early CGC graded pedigree books have since been regraded and/or re-holdered?  hm   (shrug)

It probably wasn't the intent of the original poster, but this can be taken as a trick question.

I also have some Church copies, but none as early as this Larson with the old CGC label.

I don't mean anything as a trick question at all.  I just absolutely LOVE seeing Golden age books like this.  This thread just seemed like a fun way to do it.  And that is an absolutely stunning book!!!  Thanks for sharing!!

  10. I got to meet Jim in 2019 and he signed a few books for me.  Genuinely one of the most fascinating people I have ever had a conversation with - and I have met a LOT of celebrities over my time.

I wasn't able to go to Planet Comicon this year, but sent a number of books to get signed and I am QUITE happy with all of them.  Got my XMen 49 & 50 both signed along with some Captain America and my Hulk Special 1.  That reminds me, I need to get those added to my comic wall.
