  1. That American cinematographer is awesome DiceX!!! I love these mags, they are pretty niche but they are super cool to a guy like me. have any more?
  2. Mike-- Thanks for the laying down all the wonderful details about the early FM issues. Any thoughts on the later issues? 38,40? others? 114? It seems different issues that used to be thought scarce or rare are not any longer yet others seem to be coming out as harder to get. (In high grade of coarse) It still seems fairly easy to gather a mid to low grad run of FM's from 20 up to 193 with ease. Thanks again Mike for adding to the mag board.
  3. Hey jim-- Please feel free to go on and on... The magazine forum needs it. Badly. A little mag talk is never a bad thing. About the asbergers... I have never been told by a doctor I had it, but then again if they did tell I did I would not be surprised. Its insanely common these days. Oh, the exorcist cine issue. Thats a mega cool mag. Love that cover. So many amazing covers in that run. Makes me want to collect them all over again in 9.8 just to re-discover them!
  4. Its funny- for me I got into cinefantastique in '89 or so and it was basically amazing, i had a few back issues from a cousin or something and they we're as good as it got for a film mag. Then '90 hit and the entire mag turned into a cheap and sh%$'y mag that just couldn't keep up. Right down to the horrible printing. Just terrible. I have an entire run of Cinefantastique leather bound in my office library cause it still inspires me to work harder every time I look through those amazing issues from '75 though '89. That era just hit me in a big way. I am nearly down with a raw run in, I am pretty sure 9.6 to 9.8 cause I am borderline asbergers haha! Nice to meet others who enjoyed this mag as well.
  5. Hey Jim-- Thanks for the wonderful post. I love reading about others memories of this mag. I actually only caught up with cinefantastique in the 90's and 00's and I was blown away by it in every way. I imagine if I was older when it came out it might have been the only mag I would have bought, seriously great stuff.
  6. I understand that the issues are gone, but-- There are so many mags that had already been unleashed onto the market since they we're published added to the fact most people who had bought Fangos and starlogs through them, probably already did-- I suspect those books would have just sat and rotted for many years to come before something like this happened anyway. Just my 2 cents. There are a number of dealers like Neat Stuff who have pallets of Starlog related magazines to make up for this loss.
  7. Dude-- We lived the same life it sounds like.
  8. There are a few threads that discuss the FM keys in the past few years that should be pretty easy to find. Lots of keys but mostly due to being hard to find in higher grade or variants. Basically anything before issue 40 are pretty awesome to own. some are certainly worth more than others. Value of issue 1 these days? You can snag real low grade copies for as low as $300 if you look and I have seen NM copies in the 10 grand range, I am sure they go much higher. The spider pit sequence was filmed but from my knowledge after it was cut eventually the negative was lost or scrapped. But check out this video... You'll love it and it'l answer a few questions as well...
  9. Marl-1... I went through the same thing in my childhood. We lived on a farm and I was able to gather all the local bored kids to spend all our weekends building masks and gore prosthetics, then eventually we would shoot these little Super-8 films in the coulees and riverbed forests in southern Alberta. Fangoria was a major influence in all of this-- As was the book 'Grande Illusions' by Tom Savini. Love this thread!
  10. Thehumantorch-- I for one would love to see any and all pictures you may have from western canadian cons, when I was a very young lad my first con was I think in early '89 in Calgary in the basement of some hotel along Macleod Trail. I remember being amazed to meet 'Ken Steacy' back in the day. (an actual comic book artist) This was in the insane run up to the Tim Burton 'Batman' film so anything Batman cost a fortune and anything else you could get for a decent deal. I picked up a fair copy of Batman 105 for pocket change though and I was the happiest kid in the world. Good memories for me.
  11. That House of Horror is a B&^$h to find in high grade. Nice score sir! How do you go about finding your books? Teach us Yoda!
  12. If you mind me asking-- WHERE THE HECK DO YOU DIG UP YOUR MAGS FROM? -- I am dying to know DiceX I am drooling here.
  13. Great books DiceX-- I always loved that Wrightson treasury. I have a couple copies myself but they aren't in as nice of shape. Whats the deal with the Reality issue-- That cover is killer. Never heard of it before. Is it a fanzine? Magazine or over sized comic? Once again-- Love that cover. Wow on the Gosh Wow #3-- Ya know I've seen the art for it on the forums here but had never saw where it came from. Such a cool book. By the looks of Berni's art I'd say this is certainly an earlier book in his career.. 1966? maybe 1967? He was really working hard to be Frazetta when he as young, until he morphed into what he became, which was pure awesome!
  14. Still four hundred bones for such an iconic book in super high grade. I think thats a steal myself.
  15. I think it's time to consider putting together a 9.6 run of Fangoria together if they go that cheap. Screw that-- 9.8. Why not.
  16. Yeah, that sounds about right. For some reason in my head I was expecting around 90-110 ish. Call me crazy. So I was delighted to find that is was lower. Whats a true CGC Nm 9.4 going for? I haven't really looked.
  17. Jaded-- Awesome issues man! That fangoria #1 is the best. I was hunting ebay and ya know... If you wanted a nice NM copy they can be had for a pretty reasonable price right now. Kind of shocked how reasonable actually.
  18. Sounds like a deal Jaded Savage! (love the ads in Fangoria too... I remember an ad for a remote control Godzilla that I thought was amazing, so amazing in fact that I hung it up in my locker in grade 8-- Ya, thats how big a nerd I was...haha. Have no idea what issue that was but would love to see it again) Only 44.95 for a VHS tape. I still remember in 1983 I think it was when my Dad bought me a copy of Jaws on Beta for I think 89.95. It was a king treasure back then and I still to this day cannot believe her bought it for that price. My brother got Superman think and that was pretty pricey if I remember correctly as well. -- what the hell was he thinking? haha If you ever had a laserdisc player in the 90's, these prices seem cheap. Gawd, i was a doof with my money back then. Also-- Welcome Black Lantern. I cannot agree with you more. I moved on from fango around 1993 or so. But I go through stretches where I still pick it up. To be honest recently the magazine has gotten quite good again. But maybe that has to do with the industry picking up and some quality films being made by quality film makers. I work in film now and I love looking back at certain projects for inspiration and also to learn where the film makers were thinking at the time. It's a pretty neat and fun way to do research. The old carpenter films, seeing Raimi come up and a of coarse Clive Barker we're all huge moments for me as a kid. But every time I pick up an old issue now I seem to find a new film to go hunt down and be inspired by-- Love it.
  19. Also-- I've seen some of those articles in Horrorhound. Love that kind of stuff. There was a great one on Vestron Video that I dug pretty hard. Might have to go out and hunt out a few more issues of that title. I think you may have sold me on it.
  20. So Jaded Savage... You want a copy of the coveted and very rare and completely 'Out Of Print' issue number #9 of Fangoria. You realize how expensive they are don't you. I mean... One sold for over 400 bucks once Ya know. This IS the rarest issue ever! Be hard to part with. Hmmm... Haha... Kidding. Message me your address and I'll send you a 'Fine plus' copy for free.
  21. Horrorhound does a con as well I think. I have picked up Horrorhound a couple times here and there and liked it more than Rue Morgue. Found Rue Morgue to be just a mag full of fluff articles and all it seemed to have in it was ads and reviews for stuff I don't actually want to see. I just found a stack of 70's NM copies of Cinefantastiques. Can't wait to read through them. These are some of the best behind the scenes film mags ever done. In fact they put most books to shame. Great stuff! Also dug up another copy of Fango #9. Jeez... How many did I buy back in the day? haha
  22. Another decent Horror Film mag called Rue Morgue has a pile of rather expensive back issues that seem to have a large fan base to keep demand high. I only have the odd issue I snagged to read on a flight here and there so i don't know much about it.
  23. Solid list-- I remember for a time issues 36 through 42 being rather expensive. Must have sold out at the starlog warehouse before it burnt down. I have personally had no problems finding any of these issues. In 9.4 condition is a different deal. Most of these mags we're read to hell by kids and used as reference for a lot of film folk, so finding anything in 9.4 and above is pretty tuff I suspect. Saying that-- I bet there are a lot of nice copies hidden away in collections and back logged dealer stock around the country I am sure. I have another friend who is a rather big collector of horror film mags and he told me that I think it was issue #214 is worth a ton. I seem to remember it being a big deal. I know that fango went through hard times for a number of years and I suspect those circulation numbers must have dropped quite a bit during that time. Shiver-- Any dealers you would recomend to gather a high grade collection of Fangoria's? All my old mag dealers are long gone since the late 90's.
  24. I knew 27 was a scarcer issue but I didn't realize 15 was so tuff to find. I have a few copies of that-- Let me take a look in my storage locker and get back to you. Is 22 the Creepshow cover? If so i am pretty sure I multiples of that as well. Ya, #9. That was my amazing fantasy 15 when I was a kid. It was the ultimate grail and i felt like a superstar when I dug one up in a used book store(probably a 9.0) in 1986 but as the years went on I just kept seeing them at comic stores and used books shops and cons and finally dug one up at a con in a 50 cent bin(that was an easy 8.5/9.0) I was happy to snag it, but at the same time saddened to see that it had fallen so hard. I remember I think it was issue 66 or 68 was quite tough to get as well for some odd reason. I don't have any extras of that one for sure. Shiverbones-- I'd love to hear more about what you think is scarce or rare in the Fangoria run. Love this thread-- Even if I have to post alone. I will keep it alive!
