  1. Castle Fangor!-- I actually have a few of those newsletters I dug up in the bottom of a box..., but none attached to the books. Interesting. I get you losing interest, frankly for me I die out around issue 90 myself as my attention at the time as a kid was on other things. But I am OCD and need 100 issues as a set. haha Thanks for the info
  2. Variant newsletter issue?-- That does sound familiar to me. I can see it but I can't say for sure. Now I am going to be on the hunt.(Thanks Jaded Savage) I heard once years back from a guy who used to go to Fantaco's store in Albany back in the late 80's, that they had a copy of Phantasmagoria#1. It was basically fangoria #1 with a different title card over the Godzilla on the cover. I honestly don't know if he was full of it or not, but as a kid I thought that would be the greatest Fangoria grail to ever own. (If anyone has seen this, or heck... has one, please chime in) Shiverbones-- Those Evil Dead issues are awesome! One of my fave articles in all of the run is for Evil Dead 2 in I think issue 67? But your not the only one looking at buying up more issues. I have a run of fangoria's bound in books for quick reference at my office downtown... But I was going through my loose issues and discovered quite a few NM to NM+ copies. Now I have that craving to dig up the rest of the #1-#100 I need for a complete loose NM run. So much fun going through the covers. It's still a great time to collect them. if you find them in the right places they can go for pennies on the dollar. Also-- Someone mentioned Deep Red, I also discovered I have a complete run in pretty decent shape. 8.0 and up. Kind of shocked I had them all. Did I mention I love this thread? I should. It's F%$#'ing great!
  3. Oh, the infamous 'RARE' copy of Fango. I still love that issue so much. Every cover has many good memories for me. Thanks for sharing. It's funny, that issue#8 has a Force Five Preview in it, the first 8 or so issues we're slanted towards more fantasy than just pure blood and guts horror, in fact they we're going to initially call Fangoria-- 'Phantasmagoria' (i think the name was already trademarked though) And try and make a go of it being a fantasy magazine. But the response from things like the Dawn Of The Dead article in issue #1 and showing the head exploding was so overwhelming that they ended up pushing for the horror crowd. Good thing they did. They did very well with it for many years. I also love the cover to issue #10(scanners). The other issue that popped up as SCARCE back in the day. Which actually really isn't. But great read.
  4. Those are in great shape Hepcat-- That #33 is such a great cover. Just love it. Thanks for sharing... Makes me wanna dig up mine and start up grading. When I completed my run I was able to get pretty much 9.2 and up for everything past about issue 30 but below that it's touch and go. Mostly in the 6.0-7.5 range. With a few gems like a #4 and a #6 that I scored in at least 9.0/9.2. Pretty stoked about those. If anyone else has any more... Please share.
  5. Ya, Savage-- I get that. My parents thought I might be a future serial killer based on all the posters on my bedroom walls. Every so often mom would have a hissy fit over a particular horror mag cover(like Gorezone #4 and #5--yikes) and just blow her top and make me take them all down-- haha I had tons of trouble at school sneaking Fangos in at recess and showing the other kids like it was a porn mag. Many a Fango met it's maker by my teachers--haha It's funny like I mentioned I used my horror mags like 'how to' books and ended up making a little 15 minute 16mm film in junior high. Total gore movie and was praised by my teachers for my creativity when i showed it to the school. It was packed with gore and blood and guts. But the very next day I had a stack of gore mags taken from me.
  6. Gore score was the essential gorehound book back in the day. I have a dog eared copy myself. Fantaco published that as well I think. Sad That Chas Balun died a few years back. He was a crazy voice of the gore generation. His 'Piece Of Mind columns we're great reading as well. Loved his Deep Red, I bet if you looked hard enough you could put together a run of them for a decent price these days. I might have to do that. I think I only have about four issues right now. Remember how exciting it was as a kid seeing all those covers. Deep red, Fango... man, they we're amazing and I couldn't wait to just pour through them. Good memories.
  7. I think 9 and 10 we're considered rare because the Starlog warehouse ran out of them first. (maybe a lower print run, not sure) -- Then what happened is Fantaco Enterprises which was a mail order horror company from Albany(and also publisher) started doing these awesome one page AD's in Fangoria. They would sell back issues and I suspect they took advantage of the idea of the sellout and jacked the prices of their remaining copies through the roof.(slamming the terms RARE and SCARCE onto them) I remember at one time in I think 1989 #9 was going for upwards to $300. So everyone who collected Fango used the Fantaco Ent. AD's as their own personal price guide and I guess thats where the rarity comes in. Once again--These are not rare issues at all... In my opinion anyway. But saying that-- They are still highly desirable based on all this history. Cool covers and look great in any horror film collection. You're also right Jaded Savage--Deep Red was very underrated. I know some of those issues in the right markets can sell for a pretty penny as I think they're print runs we're really low.
  8. I was a huge Fangoria collector as a kid. I still have every issue up to 114(I moved on to other film magazines as I went to film school) -- Saying that I read every issue like it was a film school bible, from amazing interviews with directors of the era to makeup artists to seeing forbidden images(at least for me) from the scariest flicks made at the time. Loved it! I actually still buy the odd issue when I see them in super high grade and cheap. Some of the keys issues(or at least they used to be) are #1, #9(the mega key for decades, not so much now--I have like 8 of them now-) #10 was considered scarce for a bit as well. Past that I remember #22, #37,#38,#39,#40, #41,#42 (I have no idea why, but they went for lots of cash back in the day even though they we're super common if you looked) I know a few from the 60's we're worth a few bucks as well, but can't think of them right now. On ebay I am starting to see prices rising on Fango's. Not a lot, but kind of reminds me when I was buying up Famous Monsters in the early 90's and everyone thought I was weird. Tons of people collected these books and are now starting to come back to them since they have money as adults. Talking genre film magazines I am still trying to finish up my run of Cinefantastique's from the 70's on up. I find a lot of dealers have good deals on mid to higher grade horror/film like Fango runs if you ask. Just have to search them out. Is that a Horrorfan issue I see? I think that is issue #4? But I may be wrong. Gorezone was very cool as well for a few years. Other great horror film mags I collected... Slaughterhouse(loved it, Best mag for young horror film makers-- only went five issues) Deep Red(for the serious film and gorehound) Fear(UK horror zine) Film Threat(great indy film mag) Toxic Horror(another from the makers of Fango, didn't last long) Video Watchdog
  9. Gawd, I love this thread-- Please, i beg you guys-- Never stop posting. It is so much fun to learn from you.
  10. Watching to see if your collection was finished has been one of the main reasons I even come back here anymore. You should be so proud of yourself now. I am eagerly waiting to see the photo. Thanks for giving us all a great insight into the wonders of your journey. Good luck on the Who eps. I agree, that canada would be the best place to go searching, so many old stations here with archives that they don't even have a clue about. PM me what eps you are looking for and maybe I can pass it on or go searching myself. "best of luck Chris
  11. I have a perfect copy of X-Men#1(60's) except that it has been swimming at the pool at some point in it's long career as a highly collectible comic book. and now it looks like a skatepark over the cover, honestly it sounds weird, but the colors are bright and there is absolutly minimum damage at all to any part of the comic except for well, this wave effect on it.(which brings the grade right down into the poo catagories), If the wave was gone, I swear it would be at least a 9.0... It's killing me. I am dieing to hear from anyone on how I may be able to fix this without ruining the comic. Thanks Bronzejunkie
  12. I'm with Meth, uh... I mean... hammer? , that Hulk is just kick and I am quite jealous of you for buying it. Now you got the Hulk#181 bug in me and I have to get me one of them slick high grade copies with the red cover and not the orange. The two I have are about as red as a sunkiss orange and it is driveing me quite mad. Anyone have a red covered hulk#181 for sale in the 9.4 and higher range at a somewhat realistic price? 'best bronzejunkie
  13. I couldn't download the link... This does sound pretty serious, I bet your lawyers are a helluv'a lot scarier than meeting you in a dark alley any night of the week.(and from the looks of you, Meth, I would fill my drawers with pudding pops if I ever met you in a dark alley)... Why would Supa-Pimp do somthing like this? Has he been sprinkling paint chips on his cheerio's in the morning or what? Good luck. Bronzejunkie
  14. I'm from the camp of believers that think that 'Weird War Tales#1' was the first and true start to the bronze age. I don't care what anyone tells me. That comic was just to damned influential to overlook, hell it set the tone for the next five years for the two big companies. Granted X-MenGS#1 is neck and neck with it, but for my money it's Weird war all the way, also a much cooler cover as well.
