  1. Where does one find the Dan Stevenson information? Michaelle Nolan is always referencing his work but I'm not sure where to really find the "master list," if it's available. I know the romance list is on matt-thorn.com. As for the titles making it to issue 150, poor Lois Lane, so close! Ditto for Warlord. Great to have this thread back. The info on Gangbusters was terrific and I found the connection the artist felt with horses to be fascinating. Marc
  2. Wow, you guys are reminding me that most of the G.I. Combats I'm missing must be the 52-pagers. Those covers are great and unfortunately a lot of them don't look very familiar... Well, something to hunt for. Marc
  3. We've talked about it on the Yahoo Big-5 list, but that cover reminds me that I just love the war stories in the snow. Especially Haunted Tank ones. Marc
  4. Shep! When I saw the screen name I knew it had to be someone from the Yahoo Big Five list. Glad to see you over here. You'll find a lot of action on these boards. Also, you'll find that even though a lot of the people are most interested in superhero stuff, there's a great appreciation for all comics here. Ie, you can post Kubert war art or high grade Big Five comics on regular threads and people will appreciate it. Best, Marc
  5. I think Scott (especially) and Harley deserve to share a special Eisner award for services to collecting! Congratulations to Ian. Marc
  6. Kanigher, for one, was quoted as saying that he expected his audience to turn over every three or four years so he would often reuse themes and such. Not that it has to do with this cover per se, but that was the first thing I thought of when I saw your comment. Marc
  7. I agree, that's really great. Thanks for sharing--it's nice to see it large size instead of Gerber size. Btw, I believe Mark got his Wonder Woman 20 back. Marc
  8. I always note things like that too. To me it seems to happen more in romance comics than in others. I don't know if we see gruesome horror ads in "kid's comics" (ie, funny animal, etc.) but it seems that it's more common to see ads for a Tommygun toy or "boys' comics" in a romance comic. Other ads that strike me as funny are ones for adult type things like arch support inserts or bookkeeping courses. Btw, thanks for that I.N.D.U.C.K.S. link. Didn't know about that site. Of course I'm so Barks-focused the rest of the Disneys are a bit blurry to me. Marc
  9. Nice memory! I figured there was a little more to the deal "cough" than just the inventory transfer. And this is circa? Marc
  10. So while we're waiting, how about some quick background? So Gerry Ross was offering some kind of big package deal, along with advice? Was this advertised in CBG and Overstreet, kind of like the Koch and/or Dolgoff big package deals? I, too, am looking forward to hearing how it turned out! Marc
  11. Nice job on the the D's, Scrooge! Great writeups. You find something of interest to say about even the pedestrian issues. Marc
  12. Thanks, I will endeavor to keep Tillie and Tessie separate in my mind! The Tillie was just very uninspired. I generally like teen-type stuff. (And we are absolutely nuts about Katy Keene over here.) Marc
  13. Speaking of unreadable, I took a look at a Tillie the Toiler (FC 176) on Friday and found it tough going. Am I off base or are they lame? Is Tessie the Typist better? I always think of those two in the same group. Best, Marc
  14. Yow, what a post, what a thread! Thanks for sharing.
  15. I was struck by that cover in particular too. I always get a kick out of the CDNP covers--busy and fun. You'll get something like the arriving cops saying "We've got the xxx gang now!" while the one gang of crooks are saying, "Look out!" and the other gang is saying "Haha!" as they set a runaway flaming car towards the first gang. As for the Bozo, I am amazed to see it on the thread already as it was only sent on Thursday. Kudos to Scrooge, as always. As a child in the 70s my local tv station either had its own Bozo show or knock-off clown. I'm not sure if I was ever in the audience or not but the one thing that really stuck with me was a part every show where the selected child would try to win great prizes by tossing a ball into a bucket. The first one could be dropped straight down then the buckets went out in a line. Pretty easy to win at least four or five prizes no matter how poorly coordinated the child was. Looow budget. The Bozo comics are fun and if Bozo ultimately gives us Krusty the Clown, all the more power to him. Marc
  16. A rip off of Alvin Karpis? I've read a thing or two make me doubt the accuracy of many of these "true" crime stories. Do you know anyone that's tried to look these up? Anyone? I've had the same experience. Sometimes they appear real but you'd think there would be easily findable records online and there aren't. Like you, I have my doubts about a lot of them. I spent some time in January Googling a few "true criminals" with no success. Marc
  17. Really nice books! Overstreet says "Movie Cowboy" for Bob Colt but I believe CBM pointed out that despite the photo covers there was no Bob Colt on screen. Marc
