Part 2 of the Ducks
The Donald Duck #3 Retail Incentive Cover is actually my favorite Donald Duck Cover. Donald is my favorite cartoon character of all time, the Sword in the Stone is my favorite Disney Movie, and Disney World (I know that castle is from Disneyland but close enough) is one of my favorite places. I also like the story it tells. Donald of course would try to pull the Sword and fail with hilarious results, Huey would say hi to the crowd, Louie is the more mischievous of the three nephews so he's enjoying the spectacle and Dewey is the most intelligent of the bunch so he's stoked to see Merlin
It was a quest to get that one in a 9.8. Finding the book raw was a challenge on its own (I think it was 1 in 10 copies), then I had to find a 9.8 candidate, CGC returned it as a 9.6, then found out about clean/pressing and the re-submission came back as a 9.8!
Also, is Ducktales #1 the first appearance of Launchpad?

Figured I'd show you all my Duck Collection (At least the Graded Books). Going from oldest to most current. Doing this because I've been thinking of trading my collection for a particular grail. Its mostly Copper to Modern Keys (ASM #300, Batman #423, Batman Adventures #12) but hesitating because not sure I want to give up the Duck Books. Some are really tough to find in a good grade. That's what makes them unique treasures to me.

I have a question. Four Color #16 is considered the "First Mickey Mouse in Comics"
What about Donald Duck? I never found a definitive answer:
There's Four Color #4 which is his first appearance in an American Standard Comic Book, but that's a cover and the book are reprinted comic strips, and I think Four Color #9 was the first original story devoted to him. Then there are the appearances before that. The Oversized Comic of him, that Yellow Linen Cover Book, Mickey Mouse Weekly which was his first original story, and finally there's Mickey Mouse Adventures #1 from 1931. It has a duck named 'Donald' but he looks quite different, like a prototype.
I personally lean towards FC #4 as the general first app but wanted to throw the line here and see what you all think

Really happy to have recently scored this. Next to Launchpad, Magica was my favorite Ducktales Character.
Kind of tempted to ask CGC for a cleaning and resubmit. I can't see any flaws on this book but its probably due to the page quality and staple (which I can't see much rust on it). Still, graded back in 2009

Here is a link to the book:
https://www.cgccomics.com/certlookup/4299496006/
Looked great when I was inspecting it there, but when I got it in person, I noticed three spine ticks. The one I can excuse but here are the two that are bothering the out of me. Technically I guess they're small enough where they meet the CGC Guidelines and you can't really see it unless you look for them and bring it to the light but still. I feel like I bought a new car but I'm fidgety with the 'scratches' If this was a minor book I wouldn't care but this was a key I was looking for a long time.
Am I being too picky or did CGC mess up?
Thanks in advance

This was shockingly low. I don't know if it was the writing on the cover that put people off or what, but the consignor must've been pretty disappointed.
This was surprisingly high. I can remember when 9.4 was the top grade in the Census for this book, and now there seem to be tons of 9.6s and 9.8s.
I noticed that too about Four Color #386. I wish I made an attempt at it but I was saving up for a chance at the WDC&S #140.
The consignor would be very disappointed if he purchased this back from the August 2018 auction. Looks like it was regraded too without a change:
WDC&S #140 was higher than I thought it'd be (more suprised at the FC #450 auction). For a while there was only 1 other 9.8 on census but this new one has White Pages so it looks to be a better copy, but now there's two 9.8s on census. Wasn't sure how it'd have affected the price.

Some Recent Duck Sales from Heritage:
Walt Disney's Comics and Stories #140: https://comics.ha.com/itm/golden-age-1938-1955-/cartoon-character/walt-disney-s-comics-and-stories-140-dell-1952-cgc-nm-mt-98-white-pages/a/7369-93220.s?ic16=ViewItem-BrowseTabs-Auction-Preview-ThisAuction-120115
I tried bidding on the FC #450 (wasn't expecting it to go that high) and WDC&S #140 but struck out

Huge Super Sentai Fan and I'd bordeline kill to get some books signed/submitted to CGC but its literally on my little guy's birthday.
Wondering if anyone from CGC is making the trip and would be interested in acquiring some signatures for me?

Glad to see fellow Trekkies here.
I have my copy completed too. Overall I'm happy with most of them except for Frakes and McFadden. Frakes was the only hombre that didn't sign next to his picture and McFadden's Signature on mine looks super lazy. After those two I made sure the rest sign next to their characters.

I bought this graded book back in 2015. Cases back then were thinner and flimsier. I'd prefer it contained in the thicker more secure cases.
Problem is that with so many of that particular book on the counterfeit list, I'm concerned it may get damaged if CGC does extra steps to make sure its the real deal.
Reason it took me so long was because I am waiting for CGC to make an appearance at a comic con closer to where I live (no way I'm mailing it). I'd feel better handing it to them directly.
The question now is, would I be better off just keeping what I have?

Some more impressive Duck Sales on recent Heritage Auctions
-

I had the same thoughts. Especially when I see these Super Hero Books that are far more common, crappier condition, and fetch for far more ridiculous prices.
Finding some Golden Age Duck Books may not be the biggest challenge in the world, but grades like that? Those are rare and real treasures in my books.
To me, the books that had a combination like Donald Duck/Barks/Kelly/Buettner had this charm to them, almost magical.

There was an amazing group of WDC&S's that just sold in Heritage's weekly auction. I say "amazing" because there were a number of issues that I had never seen in 9.2, 9.4 or 9.6 before.
Yep! Couldn't make the live auction but threw in which I thought were solid bids for the Four Color 71 and the WDC&S #64 but lost both.
Wish I made it. I probably would have threw in a higher bid for the WDC&S 82 and the WDC&S #76. I love the Christmas Covers, especially when Walt Kelly does them

I wasn't able to make the live auction but I thought my bid of $3300 gave me a considerable chance on this issue:
Beautiful Book though. Cleanest 9.2 I ever saw and graded way back in 2004. I'm sure it'd get an even higher grade with a re-submission.
I loved that movie as a kid and the recent show was phenomenal. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. I'd borderline kill if they made a second season

Yep! That's the one. Gorgeous Copy. Definitely worth the storage sacrifice. Love to own that one but its a rare find.

For my duck money I'm going to be picking up Barks books; that may hold back the value of Four Color 4 a bit. But it is a great duck cover and for CGC cover collectors I can see the appeal. In fact some of Barks' covers really don't grab you like some of the cleaner work of Kelly and Von Buettner; think of Frozen Gold vs. Old Castle's Secret. The magic is inside on the Barks' books.
If we're talking an Eye Catching Covers for Carl Barks, Four Color 199 gets my vote If we're talking covers Kelly and Von Buettner's Work definitely have more of my favorites. Kelly's Art always catches my attention first for his brighter colors and Buettner's Covers have more going on which tell a story.

I'd love to own this book. I was expecting it to sell for more:
Is this the first appearance of Donald in an American Standard Comic Book? I know he appeared in another comic (Donald Duck #nn) before this but I think that one was more of an oversized book.
-
Much appreciated. The majority of my collection are modern 9.8 books so I'm no expert with other tiers. My interest and collection is shifting more towards the golden age but some silver.
I actually bid on this book by accident. I wanted to win the 7.0 copy but didn't bid on that until I could get Comic Link's Permission to retract the bid on this 5.0. They rejected my request and I ended up winning this. At first I was mad because the 7.0 sold for $4600 but looking at this issue in hand, I'm happy with it. Probably the cleanest 5.0 I've encountered.

Bought this one on Ebay and was excited to get it, but then it turned into frustration. It has one considerable spine tick and 3 other small tiny ones.
At first glance its tough to see on this picture but if you expand it, it almost looks like it breaks color. What annoys me is that how did this get the 9.8? Tempted to resell it and look for another (but this book isn't exactly common in a 9.8)
Does anybody else have a 9.8 like this?

Looks like the buyer is trying to flip it (or had a change of heart): I think he had it at $7990 a few days ago:

I'd love to own this book someday, and MIGHT be interested in purchasing it for the sold heritage auction price (for that particular copy). The writing on that cover is really distracting for me
