  1. Neither am I. But, I am curious whether there will be a halo effect because it is for Jim’s charity effort which drives the price up. I think I will try to research the pricing later.
  2. Something new for you Hulk fans was just posted.
  3. Thanks. I am still not sure what to do with it in terms of display and/or storage. So far, it’s been fun to turn it on it’s side under strong light, and try to figure out how he got all the pieces pasted together like this. And some of the detailing is best looked at really closely. Also, the piece is dark, so it needs really good lighting to appreciate. Light matting and UV protection would allow me to frame it, but maybe not enough to overcome my interest in looking at it closely from different angles.
  4. I won this John Bolton page from "Books of Magic" at a recent Heritage Auction for only $1,680. Frankly, I think I got a bargain; it is nuts. I had been looking at another one recently, but this one is better (and cheaper). The page itself has the Phantom Stranger showing Timothy Hunter the past, as he is to consider whether he will use magic in the future. Time travel makes people a little sick, so PS is comforting him a bit before they head to their next destination. I didn't realize how good this piece was until I received the original. Apart from the fact this it is painted, the detailing is exceptional and very carefully thought out. Various pieces were cut and glued onto the base, which includes the painted figure on the bottom. But, the overlain pieces are not what you would expect; it isn't just the 3 rectangles. So while the Egyptian figure was cut out and pasted on, part of it includes PS's hat and part of the Egyptian figure runs over it (as an example, there are others, too). The rectangles were deliberately trimmed to be smaller than the boxed in area which help create what is almost a 3D effect with the subjects in boxes. I still can't figure out if this is considered a full page splash, a spash page with inset panels, or form of panel page, what with the figues all moving through time. The piece is large with the dimensions a healthy 15" x 22". It also has an inscription on the back stating that it is to "Eliane, With Best Wishes, John Bolton" and dated October 18, 1992. Yes, the spelling is correct. Anyone know who "Elaine" might be? All in all, one of my best purchases in recent years.
  5. I hope you are right. The bidding pattern just struck me as odd.
  6. I thought the prices were too stiff, so I passed.
  7. Fair question. Bidding on this piece shot up almost instantaneously when it was posted. Almost like there was some overheated bidding by 2 involved bidders. Then, it stopped cold. As though bidders were having second thoughts. I hope the bids are honored, of course, but if that price is really high for the artist ( and I do not know his market), that pattern would be something I would be cautious about. I see it sold for the $14,800.
  8. A nice guy, too, who really appreciates the fans.
  9. Clearly, things have changed since my day, but she will definitely get the message. In my misspent youth, I would have let my decorating be a little softer and warmer.
  10. Anyone know where I can find a storage binder that fits in size between the Itoya poster size and the 13 x 19 sized? Something holding art widths of a little over 15 inches.
  11. Honestly, I was not impressed with Kirby's Fourth World. The only one I liked was Mr. Miracle.
  12. I noticed the bidding on this has only moved up $200 in 2 days. Is the market rate for this artist really this high? Or, is this a candidate for another bidder’s refusal to honor their bid?
  13. If I may add a follow on to this question, which artists were better at writing stories than their art? Presumably, Bendis is in this mix. Is Miller a better artist or writer? I think Byrne is a better artist, but he has done some solid storylines as I recall.
  14. Agreed. Note the different eyebrows.
  15. I think Frank Miller will get a lot of votes. Including mine. But, given the vintage, don’t ignore Will Eisner.
  16. Not a bad thought, but this stuff is addictive. If you find a significant other, break her in, early on, to the hobby and the buying propensities it generates. Do what you can to get her to accept you and the hobby as a package deal. But, don’t be surprised if you one day hear: “what do you love more, me or comic art?” So, gear up now for a good answer to that one. And if she ever does pull that sh*t on you, you have found a controlling woman. Caveat emptor, and that isn’t about art.
  17. But that’s just the content in the panels. How about the panels themselves, such as the border design? How about pop outs? Or shadows and images which extend beyond the panels, including sound effects? Too much can distract, but just the right amount can add zing w/o interfering with the story.
  18. Yes. It is in the settings. I exclude one.
  19. Every once in a while, I run into Tom Mandrake at conventions (I have a number of his pieces). He has said that he can draw the old fashioned way as quickly as current artists draw on a computer. But, I have also heard younger artists swear the opposite. I muck around with Adobe Illustrator, and honestly, I can see how duplication of images and correction of lines is a lot easier on the computer. I, however, am lousy as an artist. And admittedly, some things, like a traditional six panel, are tough to make interesting. I remember meeting John Higgins at one show (colorist, Killing Joke, among other art) and was so taken by his ability to make a six panel with talking heads on it--interesting--I commissioned him on the spot. Naturally, he did a great job.
  20. Well, Jeff Scott Campbell’s Zatanna is up to $14,600 after less than 1 day. He may be a fan favorite, but I guess a lot of people didn’t get the office memo about unemployment, recession, and business shutdowns.
  21. While you are undoubtedly correct from a financial perspective, I really like a well sequenced panel page, particularly if it has clever panel designs which move the story along (not that I can get word balloons anymore).
  22. I would recommend that you do buy them both. Personally, I think the pair are worth more together, so you see both parts behind the art (particularly if you get them framed).
  23. Like the fruity primate says, don’t sweat it and keep ousting. I certainly don’t have it.
  24. Did he miss a day, or is my counting off?
