  1. I don’t care for prelim’s unless I own the finished art as well. There was a prelim by Davis of the Phantom Stranger from Another Nail which I didn’t bother bidding on even though I would like a finished page. To me, it’s like foreplay without the follow through. Why get excited for no good reason? With that said, some of the prelim’s posted here are almost like final pieces, and I can see their attraction. Sometimes, you can’t get what you want, but can get what you need.
  2. The weekly auction prices seem a bit down the last two weeks. Anyone notice that? Think the prices will be a bit lower than typical market this time?
  3. I don’t think Jim gets a deduction, beyond the cost of ink, pencils and paper.
  4. I’m not so sure that DC/WB’s lawyers should get involved. Isn’t this up to the individual taxpayer to provide proof?
  5. And yet again, comics predict the future.
  6. Fixed. Jim had been made aware of the mistake. He got the information from that well-known tax firm “eBay”, and has now amended the listing. I had sent him an email, but he had first learned of it beforehand..
  7. I think he is looking for characters to draw who are not common. With that in mind, I hope someone has the guts to ask for Sugar and Spike, or maybe even Hoppy the Marvel Bunny.
  8. I’m not a tax lawyer, and it has been quite a few years since I took tax law, but that doesn’t sound right to me. You aren’t supposed to get a deduction for the value of something received back. So, if you go to a dinner to raise money for charity, you are theoretically supposed to exclude the value of the meal, with the balance being deductible. The fact that it is a charitable foundation just means that the amount paid over the value received is deductible. Taking what Jim posted at face value would mean the value of his sketches is only 5% of what is paid? I doubt it. If someone has better knowledge on this (like some of our accountants here), I defer to them.
  9. Consider this news: The reason Jim is only doing DC sketches is because when he is finished, DC is going to publish them and sell the sketch books. Using anything besides DC characters would undoubtedly create copyright issues. I had sent him an email suggesting that all the sketches should be published when he is finished. I was advised that this was the plan. I also asked him if I should keep it secret, and the response was that publicity will be good for sale. So, there’s some good news coming out of the pandemic for a change.
  10. Next up, Batman who Laughs. So far, my favorite. And from the looks of the bidding already, I am not alone.
  11. Maybe he has a brother? Nah, that would be too low.
  12. Let me first say that I am impressed by Jim Lee's 60 day marathon effort to do sketches for the benefit of the industry. Apart from the applause, I was wondering what have been your favorites to date, pricing, and any other matters on the subject? If you are not familiar with the marathon, they are on eBay, and his screen name is ChunkyMonkey0000. They are also on his Facebook page. The fact that he can bang out a sketch a day at that level of quality, and still have time for a full-time job, is impressive. To draw what looks like an average of $5,000 or so each at this stage is amazing to me. Of the first 4, I think the one I like least is Bizarro. Nightwing looks the cleanest; Dr. Fate is a bit fussy for my taste (too much detail). Azrael simply doesn't interest me. Anyone's thoughts?
  13. Sounds like you want to bring coal to Newcastle.
  14. What particularly interests me is the status of prices after the start of the Covid-19 business closures. Anybody monitoring prices lately on Heritage, etc?
  15. Raw. Did he also try to sell it to you? Ever explain his behavior?
  16. My heart screams that I should do exactly what you did, and then, I remembered someone else who posted something similar a few months back. So, I have re-thought about it. In a situation like this, I would have to tell myself not to do it. He knew he didn’t know what it was worth. He did not try to look it up, and you are not a dealer with whom he should have a legitimate reason to expect a fair price. He also did not operate under a mistaken factual belief, for example, getting the artist’s attribution wrong, which you took advantage of. In a sense, he played you— you did his homework for him and suffered for it. Once he made an offer of $500 of his own free will, you should have paid him in cash, gotten a receipt, and left. He would have been happy with it and so would you. Yes, hard to do, I agree. And yes, you probably did have a binding oral agreement at $4k. But you would be stunned to hear what he would actually say at trial after he spoke to a lawyer about it.
  17. See what happens when you offer someone money in a safe pubic place?
  18. Helluva job. But is the comic art con really moving from Northern NJ to NYC?
  19. Didn't Wolverine have a villain named Contagion? Any artwork from those stories? Also, wasn't there a really old Justice Lague story, first series, involved with getting the heroes sick?
  20. This may not be the answer, but try reducing the quality of the image to a lower pixel count. My guess is that what you want to post exceeds the allowable size. I'm okay with a small image, however, since I can always magnify it.
  21. Nice piece. I like the way the artist used what are presumably virus packets to tie various panels together and show the spreading illness. For that, extra credit. But, the author gets a demerit for the way he dumped extra bodies. That would likely spread the illness. He should have picked something like mass graves (unless that was a deliberate plot device). What is it from?
