  1. Still and all, his point is correct. I have been debating the purchase of a particular pencil piece for a while, but I haven't pulled the trigger because the absence of certain areas that are to be mostly filled in leaves the pencil piece looking too light on detail.
  2. Every comic art dealer comes to Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey for the semi-annual art shows to enjoy the sights and the fine cuisine.
  3. I spotted this page on Heritage, from a Black Orchid story in the early 1970's (run-of-the-mill art), and the middle panel on the bottom tier got me wondering. Bondage was banned under the Comics Code Authority, and the image of a woman tied spread-eagled on the bottom surprised me. On the other hand, the bondage wasn't clearly sexual in nature, even though the man and the woman were in a sexual relationship. And the tier-up was by a woman super-heroine. Suffering Sappho! So, I was just wondering if anyone knows whether this just slipped passed the censors or fell into some sort of loophole.
  4. I do a lot of rewriting, so permit to suggest that you should just say what you want to say, and during review, try shrinking it by at least 20%. That will likely knock out more than 20% because stray phrases and minor thoughts also will fall by the wayside. I think we already have too many “ages” for comic books: what’s next? The Tungsten Age? Maybe wedge the idea into the existing structure in order to keep the division numbers down.
  5. Curiously, this question indirectly affected me recently. Sometimes Heritage Auctions posts descriptions before it posts actual art. When I read a recent description, with page number, I was interested. Turned out someone counted differently, and the shown page wasn’t interesting to me at all.
  6. I never have bought from his store, but his style is iconic and hard to miss. You can always save the receipt. In other cases, you do have the right to be suspicious. There is a lot of fake art out there, particularly on eBay, and for certain artists, like Kirby, Schultz/Peanuts strips, and Bruce Timm. I don’t know if you can get a CoA from most dealers, I never asked. It’s best to learn what you are buying before you buy, and for now, focus on less expensive artists and pieces which are less likely to be forged. Try buying from the artist where you can, or at least the artists’ agents.
  7. I hadn’t noticed it before, but he/she has bo*bs.
  8. I would count that one, since it has both art and text that relates to the story. It isn’t something like a house ad, which I would not count. But that’s me.
  9. I agree. It has gotten me to rethink the subject. I had also been thinking of a “re-mark”, if I correctly understand what it is, but this seems better.
  10. Swamp Thing/ Alan Moore comes to mind. The original Ford Mustang was basically a Ford Falcon chassis on a pretty body. Falcons are gone, not Mustangs.
  11. Keeping his arrows stuck in the ground like that would definitely make him a “green” arrow.
  12. Not sure I agree with the fix. Eisner was the father of using panel selections and design to show time, and story progression, and he certainly did use some splashes, mostly in his introductions, but not like today. Besides, I was really focusing on modern work, and Adams was a game changer that Eisner basically invented.
  13. It should be mentioned that shill bidding is likely a crime under Federal law, as well as various State’s laws. You will find the subject pops up quite a bit, particularly in eBay auctions. And, if something is criminal, there is usually a civil basis to sue someone (example- the crime of murder is also an intentional tort, like wrongful death.)
  14. Perhaps I really wish people would stop looking at the price of art and think more about the artistic merit of the piece. Then this sort of stuff would be much hard to do. Frankly, I think the piece looks stereotypical dumb, even if Hughes is a good artist. But then, I have noticed for the past several months, some inexpensive pieces by Kaluta showing up regularly on Heritage and selling for well under $1,000. Okay, the subject matter isn’t always the most interesting, and there isn’t a Spider-man or Batman in the bunch, but they are the work of a very skillful artist (who sometimes is a little too detailed perhaps). I’m not shilling, they aren’t for sale by me, but compared to that painting? Really, makes me wonder about a lot of pricing.
  15. Now, why were there deleted? Why is it illigitimate to question what looks like market manipulation, by offering specific facts and NOT making any accusations?
  16. It isn't just a generational thing. I was never a great fan of Marvel artists' bullpen art, including the names you mentioned, and others. But, I also think there is a difference in format and presentation today--lots more splashes and splashly looking artistry as compared to more detailed-oriented pages set around the classic six panel with modifications. Byrne was always big on the splashy look (that is not a knock, his skill set is very high). Adams virtually invented it. Whether the greats will always be great is a matter of opinion. Check the prices on rare antique furniture compared to more modern classics from the Art Deco period or Mid-century modern. Guess what isn't selling well?
  17. Because I don’t like it very much. While I would like a splash, I would rather get a dozen, or a half, or two, of different artists. I love the variety, And, if I ever did buy a whole story, it would be a better one.
  18. What interests me is the price it will go for, because Aparo prices have come down a bit for average pages. Someone else was trying to sell a complete story recently for an amount in the mid 20’s, although it has since been taken down from CAF (I don’t know why). What has happened in the past few months is a fair number of average panel pieces, with the Stranger, have dropped to the $500-1,000 range, and one below it. Without PS, they have been available below $500 for awhile. As is typical for these stories, the Stranger is not on a lot of the pages, so it has a relatively low breakup value. The art is very, very good, but the subject matter IMHO is a bit weak. I would expect there will be a disappointed seller who may not get $15,000 for this. Let me add that last year, I thought the prices for Aparo pages were being manipulated into a higher range. Perhaps it was just their relative scarcity for a while, but one never knows.
