    Wonder Woman 1984 began its overseas rollout this week with 32 overseas territories. Gal Gadot’s DC Films sequel earned $38.5 million overall, down around 48% to around $73 million in “market to market” comparisons for Wonder Woman. Along with the obvious challenges in relation to the pandemic, the film opened quite soft in China, earning just $18.8 million compared to the $37.6 million debut for Wonder Woman back in 2017. So outside of China, its $19.7 million versus $35.4 million, a drop of around 44%. going to take a lot of HBO Max subs to make up for the $500MM+ WW BO shortfall (vs pre-pandemic estimates)

    The Warner Bros/DC sequel had a roughly 23% increase in China on Saturday for an estimated $14.2M in the market through today. As we noted yesterday, this is coming in lower than expected with social and critical scores below the previous movie which opened to about $38M and went on to gross $90.5M in the Middle Kingdom. The hoped-for Saturday family bump did not materialize, and this is pushing the full weekend launch down to around $35M at the international box office, give or take. my prediction that 1984 could approach WW's final total in Asia ($200MM) was wrong; Europe & Latin America, as guessed, will be a problem. spitballing, but $250MM Int'l would be heroic after this start.

    yes, the #205 went for 12x what i bought it slabbed for; so no gripes on those. DC are certainly a lot harder to find in HG than Marvel; one of the reasons i decided to sell is because i was down to about 90 books to complete every run i was after in at least 9.2 (really 9.4) and in the last year i knocked off about 5 books and overpaid for at least 3 of them.

    flopping in China, "mid $20MM range" vs $40MM est and $38MM launch for WW Warner Bros/DC’s Wonder Woman 1984, as expected, landed at No. 2 in its China debut on Friday, coming in behind local actioner The Rescue. The Patty Jenkins-helmed sequel to 2017’s Wonder Woman grossed an estimated RMB 44.2M ($7M, including sneaks). This portends a weekend in the mid $20M range for the Middle Kingdom, lower than where the industry was seeing it heading into the session, thus also pushing down the full international box office launch. Overall, the disappointing China start is looking to set the offshore debut at around $45M, versus the $60M the industry was expecting.
