Along with the 2 page text story, there is a 9 page comic story....I think for sure its the one you remember. And it IS indeed from Dennis Giant #4. You said it, Joe! That #4 in ANY shape is hard to find. I finally snagged a "reading copy" a week or so ago off eBay. Hey Jon If you recognize my nickname at all, you know me from ABPC. I've been calling out for contributors to help scan Dennis comics now for quite awhile. Aside from a few early issues being done, no one seems to have any they are willing to scan. Would be VERY interested in what you can share with us, through any of your contacts. Darn glad to have a fellow ABPC'er on the board!! (Aside note for anyone interested: Out of the Al Wiseman issues of the regular Dennis series, these have been scanned by myself and others -- #'s 1, 8, 15, 16, 19-23, 30, 32, 35, 36, 38, 41, 42)

Haven't had a great deal of time to post or contribute here lately, but have been reading the posts as time permits. Holy smokes! This great group continues to get EVEN GREATER! Belated howdys and welcomes to Jim Wiseman (love the tattoo) and Bill Alger. My wife has now gotten used to my yelps of happiness everytime I read a new series of postings from you guys. I loved the CBM article posted (thanks Buttock!), and look forward to all the stuff Joe and Billy are sharing with us, as always. You guys rock! The following thumbnails are the first half of Dennis #1 from 1953. I picked it up recently and decided to scan and share with anyone who may never get the chance to read the stories contained inside it. As with the Joey story I posted a few weeks back, just click on the thumbnails, and you'll be directed to a larger scan of the page. (If you chose to save the images, just delete the the last 3 characters of the filename; ImageShack, my image host, adds them on automatically. Just remove them if you choose to save the files to your computer). I realize 18 thumbnails in one post takes up some room on this page, but I really didn't know any other way to share these. Joe, Bill or others on this list more knowlegable, may be able to to share their insights with you concerning the truth about "chunks of series" being reserved by one or more individuals on the GCD. I can only give you my opinion... I'm on a few other lists/groups, and its quite universal that, while the GCD is a great resource for historians and fans, it seems (to me) to be a political, buddy buddy type operation when it comes to allowing folks to contribute data. They are open to cover scan donations, but when it comes to volunteering your time and info for the books themselves, its a closed shop. The people who have "reserved" full series, Im sure were well meaning when they "got dibs" on whatever... but some of these series have not been updated in YEARS. And you're right, there are mistakes that need to be corrected. I don't mean to tread on the toes of historians like Will Murray and Bob Hughes, both fine individuals. I used to subscribe to the GCD mailing list, but quit after wading through endless threads of debating over HOW to correct false data, HOW to verify false data, how to correct the corrections.... Ugh! A lot of arguing over writer credits, inking credits.... which is FINE, but hardly anything ever got DONE. Its a huge project, granted. But the way they deligate "experts" to have control left me a little frustrated. And concerning how your comments might be taken the wrong way? I think we are in agreement the GCD is a great tool. And we share in our confusion and bewilderment on how such a fine website, could allow "reserving" comic series, if for no other reason, to keep it in a controled, tight circle of fans. *sigh* Again, these are only my opinions. I'm sure if we were administrators of the project, we would be aware of all the problems regarding an "open door policy". I dunno. Can someone shed some light?

Taking a page from Joe's book, I took it upon myself yesterday to email Fred Hembeck, to encourage him to give this great forum a look. He responded back today (Hi Fred, if your reading this ) and expressed his genuine happiness that such a forum as this exists. He promises to lurk and soak up what he can, as time allows..... but more importantly, he wants to promote this forum on his links page, as early as next week! He said it seems not a week goes by that someone doesnt contact him in regards to his Toole-Wiseman piece he did on the website. I have the feeling we're gonna need to order more root beers soon........

Welcome welcome welcome, Mark! Fantastic collection you have there! Put me down as someone who would LOVE to see those early Sunday pages. I've seen a few on eBay, but not very often. Do you have lengthy runs, or just a few here and there? ::PB sammich and root beer slide::

Wow! INCREDIBLE! The amount of work involved on your end is certainly appriciated, Joe. You and Bill are to be saluted for getting the indexing project "off the ground". I've built a database using FileMaker Pro (Mac user here), and have set up fields for the following data: • Publisher • Title • Issue # • Cover Notes (This will come in handy when I enter the Giants.. "In Hawaii", "Gags & Games" etc.) • Month • Year • Story Title • # of Story Pages • Story Synopsis (also will include if its a reprint, and where it was originally published) • Notes A lot of data to cover, but in the end it will be worth it I think. I've included page counts for stories, as I suspect that stories may have been trimmed/edited/shortened in the 70's when they were reprinted. I don't know this for a fact though.... Here's a sample listing: --------------------------- Dennis the Menace [Pines] #23 July 1957 (c. Wiseman) • IFC - 4 Daily Strips • "Dennis the Bookworm" (10 pgs) Dennis goes to the library with Dad • "Meanwhile...Back at the Ranch..." Joe, the data that you and Bill are sharing with us is INVALUABLE, since most of us here don't have the incredible collections you guys do. As stated earlier, I'm busy currently buying cheap lots of Dennis comics off of eBay, and will have lots to keep me busy in the weeks and months ahead as time permits. Anyway, BIGTIME salute to you two, for making this Dennis fan more informed, with your fantastic research and contributions!

Joe, concerning the early issues (and Giants) I would be VERY hesitant to scan the interiors UNLESS they were just "reading copies". I've given up all hope of having a high grade collection; instead, Im buying cheap, FA-VG copies. I wouldn't expect anyone to lay a VF Dennis #3 or a NM Dennis Giant #6 on a scanner. No matter how careful you are, the spine will get damaged, not to mention the risk of the centerfold popping out. Ouch. But I will gratefully endorse anyones efforts to scan complete cover to cover versions of their torn-up, ratty, creased, water-damaged, spine-rolled copies of early Dennis. *grin* Seriously, I agree that I can see the day where ALL of the Dennis comics will be burned to a series of CD's or a couple of DVD's and be enjoyed and researched and indexed, etc. And I will do everything I can personally do to help. I've already started a database to begin indexing Dennis story titles/Page counts/Synopsis/reprints. Barebones right now..... but some day......
