  1. I'm sure someone will correct me, but that just has a big time Ketchum vibe to me. Thats a VERY nice piece, brother.
  2. Bill, I can help you. Email me at efr @ cableone.net and let me know which stories or scans you may need.
  3. Along with the 2 page text story, there is a 9 page comic story....I think for sure its the one you remember. And it IS indeed from Dennis Giant #4. Here's a link to the complete 9 page story, for those who want to read it: Dennis Park (Thanks to fellow Dennis message board member, 313, who scanned this book earlier this year!)
  4. You said it, Joe! That #4 in ANY shape is hard to find. I finally snagged a "reading copy" a week or so ago off eBay. For anyone interested, I've scanned pages from it, and have uploaded it to ZShare, a file hosting site. Dennis the Menace #4 <----- Just click the link, click "download" and enjoy! And let me add my thanks for all the fine work you do, Mr. Alger! An incredible tribute to the genius of Al Wiseman!
  5. Welcome Kevin!!! (And thanks for the larger scans over on a.b.p.c) Here's a list of the Wiseman issues still needing to be scanned from the regular series: #2-7, 9-14, 17, 18, 24-26, 27, 29, 33, 34, 37, 39, 40, 43-46. I own (and plan to scan) #11, 17, 18, 25, 29, 37, 44, 46. On a related note, anyone not able to access Usenet/newsgroups to download these complete issues, but DESIRING to, here's a link to a zip file I made of Dennis the Menace #8. http://s3.youshareit.com/files/52c6b2645a4fce372a3507baa150b21e.html Just click on the link, and download the zip file. Should take about 2 minutes on a cable connection. If anyone finds this way of sharing helpful, please let me know. escape
  6. Thanks for the thanks, Joe. I'm just happy to be a part of this fine forum. I feel like I'm surrounded by Scholars and Experts of "that Mitchell kid" and am thrilled to have a seat in the classroom
  7. Hey Jon If you recognize my nickname at all, you know me from ABPC. I've been calling out for contributors to help scan Dennis comics now for quite awhile. Aside from a few early issues being done, no one seems to have any they are willing to scan. Would be VERY interested in what you can share with us, through any of your contacts. Darn glad to have a fellow ABPC'er on the board!! (Aside note for anyone interested: Out of the Al Wiseman issues of the regular Dennis series, these have been scanned by myself and others -- #'s 1, 8, 15, 16, 19-23, 30, 32, 35, 36, 38, 41, 42)
  8. Haven't had a great deal of time to post or contribute here lately, but have been reading the posts as time permits. Holy smokes! This great group continues to get EVEN GREATER! Belated howdys and welcomes to Jim Wiseman (love the tattoo) and Bill Alger. My wife has now gotten used to my yelps of happiness everytime I read a new series of postings from you guys. What a fantastic wealth of info continues to be shared. Its mind boggling, I tell you. Here's the second half (pages 19-36) of Dennis the Menace #1, that I started a couple of weeks ago. Apologies for the delay.
  9. I'm just overwhelmed by the fantastic wealth of scans here in the past couple of days. BIG hello and welcome to Mica, thanks for sharing your scans as well. I loved the CBM article posted (thanks Buttock!), and look forward to all the stuff Joe and Billy are sharing with us, as always. You guys rock! The following thumbnails are the first half of Dennis #1 from 1953. I picked it up recently and decided to scan and share with anyone who may never get the chance to read the stories contained inside it. As with the Joey story I posted a few weeks back, just click on the thumbnails, and you'll be directed to a larger scan of the page. (If you chose to save the images, just delete the the last 3 characters of the filename; ImageShack, my image host, adds them on automatically. Just remove them if you choose to save the files to your computer). I realize 18 thumbnails in one post takes up some room on this page, but I really didn't know any other way to share these. Hope its ok. And Joe? Could you PM me your email address? I want to let you know which issues of the regular series I own and will be able to help with. Thanks! And now, Dennis the Menace #1! I'll post the rest of the book this weekend hopefully. ======= Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Page 8 Page 9 Page 10 Page 11 Page 12 Page 13 Page 14 Page 15 Page 16 Page 17 Page 18
  10. Joe, Bill or others on this list more knowlegable, may be able to to share their insights with you concerning the truth about "chunks of series" being reserved by one or more individuals on the GCD. I can only give you my opinion... I'm on a few other lists/groups, and its quite universal that, while the GCD is a great resource for historians and fans, it seems (to me) to be a political, buddy buddy type operation when it comes to allowing folks to contribute data. They are open to cover scan donations, but when it comes to volunteering your time and info for the books themselves, its a closed shop. The people who have "reserved" full series, Im sure were well meaning when they "got dibs" on whatever... but some of these series have not been updated in YEARS. And you're right, there are mistakes that need to be corrected. I don't mean to tread on the toes of historians like Will Murray and Bob Hughes, both fine individuals. I used to subscribe to the GCD mailing list, but quit after wading through endless threads of debating over HOW to correct false data, HOW to verify false data, how to correct the corrections.... Ugh! A lot of arguing over writer credits, inking credits.... which is FINE, but hardly anything ever got DONE. Its a huge project, granted. But the way they deligate "experts" to have control left me a little frustrated. And concerning how your comments might be taken the wrong way? I think we are in agreement the GCD is a great tool. And we share in our confusion and bewilderment on how such a fine website, could allow "reserving" comic series, if for no other reason, to keep it in a controled, tight circle of fans. *sigh* Again, these are only my opinions. I'm sure if we were administrators of the project, we would be aware of all the problems regarding an "open door policy". I dunno. Can someone shed some light?
  11. Taking a page from Joe's book, I took it upon myself yesterday to email Fred Hembeck, to encourage him to give this great forum a look. He responded back today (Hi Fred, if your reading this ) and expressed his genuine happiness that such a forum as this exists. He promises to lurk and soak up what he can, as time allows..... but more importantly, he wants to promote this forum on his links page, as early as next week! He said it seems not a week goes by that someone doesnt contact him in regards to his Toole-Wiseman piece he did on the website. I have the feeling we're gonna need to order more root beers soon........
  12. This is all I could find on Harvey history.... hope it helps: http://home.att.net/~thft/harveyhist.htm
  13. Welcome welcome welcome, Mark! Fantastic collection you have there! Put me down as someone who would LOVE to see those early Sunday pages. I've seen a few on eBay, but not very often. Do you have lengthy runs, or just a few here and there? ::PB sammich and root beer slide::
  14. Wow! INCREDIBLE! The amount of work involved on your end is certainly appriciated, Joe. You and Bill are to be saluted for getting the indexing project "off the ground". I've built a database using FileMaker Pro (Mac user here), and have set up fields for the following data: • Publisher • Title • Issue # • Cover Notes (This will come in handy when I enter the Giants.. "In Hawaii", "Gags & Games" etc.) • Month • Year • Story Title • # of Story Pages • Story Synopsis (also will include if its a reprint, and where it was originally published) • Notes A lot of data to cover, but in the end it will be worth it I think. I've included page counts for stories, as I suspect that stories may have been trimmed/edited/shortened in the 70's when they were reprinted. I don't know this for a fact though.... Here's a sample listing: --------------------------- Dennis the Menace [Pines] #23 July 1957 (c. Wiseman) • IFC - 4 Daily Strips • "Dennis the Bookworm" (10 pgs) Dennis goes to the library with Dad • "Meanwhile...Back at the Ranch..." (5 pgs) Dennis and Dad play cowboys in the back yard • "Road Closed" (2 pgs) TEXT STORY • "Punky" (4 pgs) Punky and his mom go to the park • "The Long and Short of It" (5 pgs) Dennis and Dad imagine what he will be like when he grows up • "The Big Build-Up" (6 pgs) Dad helps the boys build a clubhouse in the back yard • IBC - Ad for Boys Clubs of America • BC - No Title (1 pg) Dennis polishes Dad's shoes with paint Notes: Entire issue art by Al Wiseman ---------------------------- Yes, I realize I'm anal I'm still learning this database, and I'm trying to figure out now what data I may want later. Joe, the data that you and Bill are sharing with us is INVALUABLE, since most of us here don't have the incredible collections you guys do. As stated earlier, I'm busy currently buying cheap lots of Dennis comics off of eBay, and will have lots to keep me busy in the weeks and months ahead as time permits. Anyway, BIGTIME salute to you two, for making this Dennis fan more informed, with your fantastic research and contributions!
  15. Joe, concerning the early issues (and Giants) I would be VERY hesitant to scan the interiors UNLESS they were just "reading copies". I've given up all hope of having a high grade collection; instead, Im buying cheap, FA-VG copies. I wouldn't expect anyone to lay a VF Dennis #3 or a NM Dennis Giant #6 on a scanner. No matter how careful you are, the spine will get damaged, not to mention the risk of the centerfold popping out. Ouch. But I will gratefully endorse anyones efforts to scan complete cover to cover versions of their torn-up, ratty, creased, water-damaged, spine-rolled copies of early Dennis. *grin* Seriously, I agree that I can see the day where ALL of the Dennis comics will be burned to a series of CD's or a couple of DVD's and be enjoyed and researched and indexed, etc. And I will do everything I can personally do to help. I've already started a database to begin indexing Dennis story titles/Page counts/Synopsis/reprints. Barebones right now..... but some day......
  16. By a strange coincidence, I just posted this past week, a scanned version of this entire issue over on the Usenet newsgroup ( alt.binaries.pictures.comics ). It is indeed strange to see Margaret with blonde hair! Also scanned recently, Dennis #'s 8, 15, 20 & 23. I've been buying a LOT of Dennis comics this past week off eBay. My hopes are to scan them entirely so I can have a digital copy of the complete run some day. In addition to the books I have scanned, A.B.P.C. has seen dozens of complete Dennis comics posted. So one way or the other, I'll be able to read the entire run someday hopefully.
  17. Dennis was a spokesman for DQ from 1972 until the end of 2002. Dairy Queen chose not to extend their option on the character, as they felt he no longer "represented an icon that todays kids could attach themselves to". For what thats worth. And thanks for the great scans, EVERYONE. This place is Dennis Heaven! You guys rock!
  18. I'd be happy to. It's a real treat to be able to share this research with other people. When I was doing it, my wife would frequently ask me "Why?" Thanks for the info, BB. I hope when time permits, you can post a complete list of the Giants/Bonus mags with the "cover titles".
  19. Thanks for the wealth of info and the checklist! I did a quick search, and while its not really verifiable, here's a link to an auction that listed Dennis Bonus Mag #103 as part of a lot: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=12591&item=6517496757&rd=1 It would appear the title on the cover was "Baby Zoo". But its difficult to confirm without a picture. Hope this is at least a lead for you
  20. Here's a short 4 page story from Dennis the Menace #35, featuring Joey. It will give you some idea of Wiseman's delicate, draftsmanship-like style. Just click on the image to view at full size.... I've hotlinked these thumbnails from my host site, as the scans are well over 1000 pixels wide, and force the viewer to scroll across the page. Ugh. These were already scanned by me.....I'll be sure to resize any future contributions to this fine group. First time to post a scan on a forum, so let me know if I've already broken a dozen rules or anything. And add me to the list that Al Wiseman has been VERY short-changed in the credit department. Its nice to fellowship with others here that agree that Mr. Wiseman IS the "Good Dennis Artist"! On the indexing subject, I'm afraid that I only own a small handful of Dennis comics. I've aquired a few Giants from eBay recently, and just got a small lot of early Standard/Pines issues from the regular series in today. The reason I asked in my initial post, I noticed some posts on Usenet (by using Google) back in 1999 or so, from a "Ed Hatton" whos name I recognize. He at one time apparently was trying to put together data on Wiseman. I guess I figured that 7 years later, all the Dennis comics would already be indexed. Looks like its up to us, huh?
  21. Just found this site..... THANKS for all the great covers that have been posted. I've been a Dennis fan all my life, and its nice to finally see some of these early gems. Has anyone ever attempted a Dennis index? With story titles, art credits, etc for the first 100 or so issues? I've started collecting data related to the early Giants. As the years went on, Fawcett reprinted heavily from the 50's and 60's books. Just wondering if anyone has ever taken on an indexing project for Dennis.... Thanks again for starting this thread! Peanut butter samiches and root beers for ALL involved! escape
