i have mentioned this before how fun it is to get a box back from CGC .... !!!

it floors me when people say how they can't wait to see their comic grades on-line ... what a waste of three months anticipation,,

when i get a box of 15 comics back from CGC i never look at the grades on-line and i only look at one comic per day from the box randomly reached into and pulled out ..

i look at this comic for as long as i can with the grade covered up .. enjoying it and trying to guess the grade , sometimes i put it down and come back to it later in the day...

by now the anticipation is deafening , and eventually i will reveal the grade !!! sometimes it is a bit disappointing  but other times it is exhilarating !!

delayed gratification is an extremely integral and important part of life ! many millennials have absolutely no idea of this concept

then i enjoy looking at it a  bit more now knowing its grade and start thinking about the next day when i can look at another comic and have some fun and anticipation !!

sometimes i can't help it and will look at another graded comic on the same day but never more than two in one day,,,... i mean why waste all that time acquiring the raw comics over the past year or so... then submitting and waiting three more months just for instant 15 second look of the grades on-line or an instead look at all 15 comics upon opening the box at home...????

a box of 15 comics back from CGC can provide up to two weeks of this type of fun for less than the cost of a couple nights out on the town with a date...

You just made me feel normal....whatever normal is. Getting my first box of books back from CGC was like Christmas morning. Now, I didn't take a week to look at them all but I did randomly reach into the box with my head turned and slowly pull a book out one at a time to see how it graded. Absolutely loved the experience. I'm waiting for two more submissions now and the wait is KILLING me.

Now as far as why I slab. Many reasons. My collection (about 3,000) books has been sitting in my basement mostly untouched for about 30yrs. I had a blast going through them all and seeing what had value (ASM 300 & New Mutants 87) and what didn't (anyone need 20 copies of Justice League Europe #1?). I decided to start submitting books with the hopes of making a few dollars. With each batch I'm including some books that I have no intention of selling because I can vividly remember buying them with my Dad (Hulk 181 & ASM 129) or I just love the cover(X-Men 263 & GI Joe #2). These books I'll display.

In terms of auctions I do terrible all days of the week so I can't comment but the general consensus is Sunday is the best followed by Mon-Thursday and Friday/Saturday are next which is followed by pretty much every holiday and days of special meaning.  I do find sales jump up on Friday and Saturday but that is for BINS and may be due t people getting paid.

Just got paid plus maybe a few drinks to throw off judgement\loosen the purse strings. :tink:

  3. 'm going through the same process now and can agree with most of what has been said already. I researched the heck out of each book on eBay. My advice, don't just look at past sales. Also look at how many are currently for sale, if there is a ton of inventory you may have to sit on the book for a while if you plan to sell. I just received my first back batch from CGC and the grading can be a head scratcher. A book that came back a 9.4  looks better (to me) than a few that came back 9.6 and 9.8. Obviously I'm not an expert grader. Overall I'm enjoying the process of digging through comics that have been sitting for 30+ years.

That's a cool story and a nice touch by CGC . I trust, in the future, you will send your books to be pressed by CCS instead of a 3rd party individual.  Without debating the quality of pressing, I really think there is advantage to getting a freshly pressed book to the graders as soon as possible.

That's a great question and I never thought about the time from pressing to grading. Not to mention skipping the step of packaging and shipping which could (but obviously shouldn't) cause damage too. My main hang up with CCS is the processing time but if it means a few books get higher grades it's worth the wait.

  5. So, the grade is in and this one turned out to be special. If anyone saw it on Facebook, this copy turned out to be the 10,000th Hulk 181 graded by CGC. I sent it out for a press (3rd party) and then off to grading. If you saw the Facebook post about this book it came back as an 8.0. After they made the Facebook post I was contacted and told the graders thought a press would help (even though I had it pressed) and they offered to press and regrade which I kindly accepted the offer. Well, the book came back as an 8.5 after re-pressing. I can't say enough about this experience with CGC, they were great to work with. Thank you to Brittany and everyone at CGC.

As telerites said, submitting 25 books means you minimize the invoice & shipping fee pr. book the most.

I also second the whole "set up your own UPS/Fedex account for shipping" - CGC's Fedex/UPS rates aren't terrible ($13 for the first book, $2 each additional book), but they're still significantly higher than the price you would pay using your own account.

Ok guys, school me. I read in other forums that USPS Registered Mail was the way to go because of insurance. Why is FedEx better? Purely for rates?

  7. I'm trying to select my first batch of comics to send in for CGC grading. It seems like shipping escalates the cost of grading very quickly. What have you veterans found to be the most cost effective quantity to send in at one time? I realize things like value and age of the book play into this also. On average how many do you send in at one time to get graded? 5? 10? 20?

  8. I just started getting back into the comics and decided to pull some of my more valuable books for grading. This Hulk 181 looks great to me but I'm not sure how that translates to CGC. The scan of the back makes it look much dirtier than it appears to the naked eye. Would a press\dry clean help? Let me know what you guys\gals think.
