  4. for Iron Fist #15 X-Men 102, 103 and 104 and Marvel Team-up 53 Edit: Should you start a pile for me if you're going to be adding more X-men/Wolverine stuff later on?
  5. As a newbie to the boards I was super nervous about shelling out for an 8.5 Giant Size X-Men #1 that Jack had, but after reading the kudos here I pulled the trigger. Comic just arrived, looks great and I couldn't be happier.
  6. Total newbie here on the CGC forums but I've already had a great interaction with delt569 and currently working on one with s14roller so just wanted to plant my flag in the feedback thread.
  7. If I was looking to get a Hulk 181 because I'm a big Wolverine fan, but couldn't quite afford one, my next choice would be GSXM1. That's a little lower than IH181. IH180 would be my third choice. I know it's his first cameo appearance but since all you'll ever see of a graded comic is the cover, it's a big deal for your favorite hero to not even be on it. It's like Avengers Annual #10 being the first appearance of Rogue, but she's just a shadowy figure on the cover. My wife would rather have her third appearance in Uncanny X-men 158 on display because she's visible. So I don't think there's any one particular answer to the questions. Since budget is the only factor preventing people from grabbing an IH181, then whatever that person's budget actually is will probably determine if they go for GSXM, IH180, Wolverine 1 either mini series or regular.
  8. I've posted the photo of the Marvel Value Stamp from this IH181 in some other threads and gotten interesting feedback, but I thought I might pick you all's brains on what kind of grade this would get overall. The three main issues with this comic from my completely inexperienced eye are: 1. price is marked out with black marker 2. page yellowing that gets worse at the bottom 3. the MVS was cut out by the original owner, taped into the collectors book, removed from the collectors book then re-taped into the comic in the same position. I've heard someone say that'd definitely get a Restoration grade, but another person said it'd be Qualified and posted CGC's views about tape. He seemed to think it would get graded as if the stamp were not present, and points deducted for there being tape. Do you all agree with that? Given all the issues combined and the general state of the comic, what do you suppose a Qualified or even a Universal grade for this might be? Thanks all for any help! Edit: oh one more question since I'm here: Would the tape on the stamp cause any ill effects if I had this pressed? And/or is there really any value in having a book in this shape pressed?
  9. Makes sense to me. When I bought it I assumed it would end up with a qualified grade but another poster elsewhere thought it'd end up with restored, so I'd prefer a qualified. I just wanted to make sure even if it's graded as though it didn't have the stamp, that the label would specify it physically is inside the comic, so it sounds like you're pretty confident it will which helps me a lot. Thanks!
  10. Thanks for all the info, but I'm curious where you say it would be graded as if the stamp was missing. If the stamp is right there, would they not just deduct points commensurate with tape being all over the page, and consider the scissors' path like a giant tear? When the stamp is actually missing they always put "Marvel Value Stamp Missing" on the label, but it would seem odd to write that when the stamp is clearly there. Or are you saying they would GRADE it like it were missing but not say that it's missing on the label?
  11. Since this thread is about tape I hope you don't mind if I piggyback on it instead of cluttering the boards with a new thread just for this one question. I just got an Incredible Hulk #181 from the original owner who had cut out the Marvel Value Stamp as a kid and taped it into the collectors book. Then last year he cut the tape (leaving the part on the stamp where it is) and tapes it back into the original comic. My question is if I submit this for grading, do I just go ahead and ask for the "restored" label or will they decide that automatically, and beyond that is it worthwhile to get this pressed, or will the heat from the pressing have some negative affect with the tape? Alternatively would the thickness of the tape leave indentations on the other pages since the thickness of the comic is no longer uniform when being pressed? Thanks for any input.
  12. Well, I got the 181 I won on ebay today. The pages are a little more brown on the bottom than I had hoped from the mediocre photos in the auction, so I'm not expecting much once I get it graded. I figure I'll get my money's worth out of it though, as the cover is in decent enough shape to display. I swear though if this thing comes back with a really bad grade due to the brown pages and original stamp "restoration", it's gonna cause some real grade envy and I might have to flip it for a 7.5 some day. Here's some photos for reference. A question for you experts: should I not get this "pressed" due to the tape used on the stamp?
  13. For reference I got a photo online, I'll try to link the full resolution one. Full Resolution
  14. Looks great! As a newbie to comic grading I have a question. When you buy a CGC comic from someone do they relay to you the "notes" they originally receive after the grading process or are you just left with what's on the label? Is having the white line on the edge from the rear what they call "centering"?
  15. Love seeing all these well preserved copies in here. I'm saving up for an expensive car so I opted for a raw ratty copy from ebay from the original owner that had the MVS cut out and restored back into it, so I'm not expecting much once I get it graded but aside from the price being covered with black marker it looks in decent enough shape to display on the wall. Last night I was actually at my parents house and found a stash of Wizard magazines. Grabbed an issue that was January 1993 and looked up Hulk 181. $270 back then, in I assume mint or NM condition is what Wizard listed prices for? If only I had bought back then!
  16. Davebo was a nickname from high school, 357 was a random number that AOL tacked on to my very first e-mail because the generic username "DavidS" was taken. The avatar my wife had this guy from Poland that she found on Etsy do. He traces comic book art then draws people's faces on them. I'm a big Wolverine fan (Just signed up for cgc when I started looking for Hulk 181) and she liked Rogue growing up. Our cat gets to be Cyclops cause she's kind of a . She had it printed and framed and gave it to me for our first anniversary earlier this year since first is the paper anniversary.
  17. The downloadable restoration grading pdf on the CGC website returned a 404 error and I didn't easily find it in a search on the forums. I recently purchased an Incredible Hulk #181 from the original owner who had cut out the Marvel Value Stamp as a kid and recently returned it from his MVS book back into Page 10 of the comic using archival tape. Since most copies I've been looking at have either had the stamp in tact or removed entirely, I'm wondering how a "restored" stamp affects the grading? This will be the first comic I get graded so I assume it would get a "Qualified" label.
  18. Groo and Wolverine were the first two characters that got me into comics in the late 80's and I've only recently started looking for a hulk 181 on ebay. They're definitely going for more than I expected in any condition, and I'm interested to see what happens to ones signed by Len Wein since his unfortunate passing last week. I'm not a serious collector, just a Wolverine lover who wants a copy with a decent cover to put in a frame and hang on the wall. I'm sure I'll find something I'll cherish eventually. In the meantime though I found the first Groo #1 signed on the first page with a little doodle by Sergio Aragones for only $20, so I'm pretty happy. Edit: 9/18/17 I finally snagged one on ebay this weekend. Really looking forward to getting it then seeing how it's graded. Not expecting much but that's fine as I don't intend to sell it.
